Bennett tops Challenge Series feature at Hibbing while Bellefeuille, Sabraski, Simpson, Schwinn & Ruzich also record wins

HIBBING, MN (September 5) - The Structural Buildings WISSOTA Late Model Challenge Series headed farther north September 5 and landed at Hibbing Speedway in Hibbing, MN for the opening night of the 48th annual Labor Day Shootout. It was a full program of WISSOTA Dirt Track Series racing, with winners including Joel Bennett, Jody Bellefeuille, Shane Sabraski, David Simpson, Ashton Schwinn and Nick Ruzich.

Johnny Broking set fast time in the WISSOTA Late Models, with a lap of 12.623 seconds around the Iron Range oval.

Broking and Jeff Provinzino earned the front row for the night’s $3,000-to-win, 40-lap feature event. Broking was the early leader ahead of Provinzino, Kyle Peterlin and Bennett.

The race was slowed quickly after a lap-one spin by Gunner Frank, which bunched the field again and allowed Bennett to roll up on Provinzino for third as Broking stretched his advantage over the field once more.

The second yellow of the event flew on lap six for a Zach Wohlers spin in turn one and then another caution was triggered on the restart for a Wohlers/Jim Morris tangle on the backstretch.

This time on the restart, Bennett slipped by to take over third and began a hard battle with Provinzino for runner up honors, while Broking was continuing to set the pace out front. Bennett was finally able to make the pass for second on lap 13 and began to track down Broking in the lead.

As the leaders took the halfway flag, Broking led Bennett, Peterlin, Provinzino and Dave Mass, who had rallied from his 10th starting spot into fifth just as the final caution flew over the field on the 20th lap.

Once the field went to green for the final 20 laps, Bennett raced up alongside Broking for the top spot on lap 22 and set off into the lead with Peterlin working up alongside Broking for second just behind.

As Bennett continued to lead, Mass pressured Provinzino for fourth on lap 26 and then after getting by him, passed Broking for third two laps later. Meanwhile, Cory Crapser and Kevin Burdick were working hard to race back into the top five as Bennett was now feeling pressure from Peterlin, who was trying to rally around the high side to pull up alongside Bennett.

Action was hot and heavy over the last few laps as Mass slipped to the inside of Peterlin for second as the leaders were marred in lapped traffic. Peterlin slipped his right rear off the backstretch with two laps to go, allowing Mass to solidify second. Out front, Bennett raced off to his first career Challenge Series victory by 1.044 seconds ahead of a charging Mass. Peterlin, Broking and Crapser rounded out the top five at the line.

Sixth through 10th were Burdick, Provinzino, Sabraski, Nick Jacobson and Skeeter Estey.

David Simpson won the WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature, while Shane Sabraski won the WISSOTA Super Stock feature. Jody Bellefeuille won the WISSOTA Modified feature, with Ashton Schwinn winning the WISSOTA Mod Four feature and Nick Ruzich winning the WISSOTA Hornet feature.

In the track’s non-WISSOTA action, Michael Blevins, Sr. won the Crown Vic main event and Cameron Schwinn won the Mini Stock feature.
