Estey earns $3k for Challenge Series score at Hibbing; other Shootout winners are Sabraski, Blevins, Kintner, Schwinn and Fosso

HIBBING, MN (September 6) - The Structural Buildings WISSOTA Late Model Challenge Series completed its five-night holiday weekend swing at Hibbing Speedway in Hibbing, MN Sunday, for the final night of the 48th annual Labor Day Shootout.

WISSOTA Dirt Track Series winners on the night included Skeeter Estey in the Challenge Series, Shane Sabraski, Michael Blevins, Jr., Tyler Kintner, Ashton Schwinn, and Brady Fosso.

Twenty-nine WISSOTA Late Models were on hand, with Shane Sabraski setting fast time with a lap of 14.054 seconds around the Iron Range oval.

Estey and Johnny Broking earned the front row for the night’s $3,000-to-win, 40-lap feature event and Estey took the early lead from the pole, with Broking a close second on the opening circuit.

Broking was able to race by Estey into the lead on the second circuit and set out to pace the field with Estey and Darrell Nelson battling for runner-up honors, until an early caution bunched the field for a restart.

On the restart, Broking again took off out front ahead of Estey and Nelson, while Kevin Burdick, Dave Mass, Ryan Mikkelson and Jeff Provinzino were in a great four-car tussle for fourth just behind.

Back out front, Estey was able to race to the inside of Broking on several occasions for the lead with lap 12 being the closest, with just a .035 second margin for the lead. Estey nipped Broking on lap 13 for the top spot and then was able to extend his advantage a lap later, setting off into the night out front.

The crowd saw entertaining action for the lead between Estey and Broking for the next handful of laps until a caution flew on lap 30, once again setting up a double-file restart with just 10 laps to go.

Four cautions over the next four laps kept things tight and the field was finally able to click off the final five laps. Broking gave it one last effort on laps 36 and 37 to try to swoop by for the lead, but the bottom lane was just too dominant and Estey’s race car was too good out front to give up any position as the laps wound down.

Estey drove to his first career series win in front of his hometown crowd. Broking crossed the finish line in second with Nelson third. The rest of the top five consisted of Burdick and Mikkelson.

Sixth through 10th were Kyle Peterlin, Mass, Sabraski, previous night’s winner Joel Bennett and Jeff Massingill, who earned hard charger honors. He advanced 11 positions to finish 10th.

Sabraski won the WISSOTA Modified feature, while Tyler Kintner won the WISSOTA Super Stock feature. Michael Blevins, Jr. won the WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature, with Ashton Schwinn winning the WISSOTA Mod Four feature and Brady Fosso winning the WISSOTA Hornet feature.

In the track’s other nonsanctioned action, Michael Blevins, Sr. won the Crown Vic main event and Tim Winter won the Mini Stock feature as well.
