With the Big Al and GHGH Dash on tap at River Cities, night two winners at the Seitz Memorial include Giossi in the Lates and Peterson in the Mods

GRAND FORKS, ND (September 11) - The first night of the 20th annual John Seitz Memorial was held Friday, September 11 at River Cities Speedway. On tap was a full program for the WISSOTA Modifieds - the Big Al Delaine Memorial - as well as the Go Hard or Go Home Dash for the WISSOTA Late Models to set the first four rows of Saturday night’s Seitz Memorial finale.

WISSOTA Street Stocks and Midwest Modifieds also ran heat races to qualify for a Saturday finale feature.

In the Modified headliner, Mike Stearns and Tyler Peterson led the field to the green flag. Stearns held the first lap advantage before Peterson used the high side to vault into the lead. Travis Saurer was third, Cole Chernosky moved into fourth and Brenden Luschinski was fifth to complete the fourth lap.

Peterson continued to lead ahead of Stearns by more than 2 seconds with eight laps complete, while Luschinski took third from Saurer and then set off after Stearns for second; Luschinski grabbed the spot, but was still 2 seconds back from Peterson out front as the front of the field continued to work their way through the backmarkers. Saurer held fourth and Dustin Strand was fifth before a caution for a slowing Preston Carr regrouped the field.

Back under green Peterson held control ahead of Stearns, who regained second. Strand moved into third ahead of Joseph Thomas, but Thomas took third a lap later. Fourteenth-starter Ryan Gierke moved into fifth when Luschinski left the track with presumed mechanical issues.

With 15 laps to go, Peterson’s advantage was about 1.5 seconds ahead of Stearns, who was under pressure from Thomas. Gierke supplanted Strand for fourth.

Peterson continued to lead through heavy lapped traffic, holding position in every lane. As Peterson worked through the lapped cars, Stearns chipped away slightly at the lead. A caution for Blake Ferris regrouped the field with just 10 laps to go.

Thomas used the restart to take second from Stearns, immediately going after Peterson for the lead. Stearns was third ahead of Strand, and Gierke was fifth under heavy pressure from Saurer, who was using the top side of the track to reel him in. With five to go, Gierke had pulled away from Saurer and was using the bottom to challenge Stearns for fourth.

Out front Peterson’s lead was nearly 1 second with two to go. Peterson held strong out front and took the checkered flag, and the $3,092 winner’s check. Thomas, Stearns, Gierke, and Strand completed the top five.

In the Go Hard or Go Home Dash, James Giossi started from the pole and led all 15 laps for the $920 victory, putting him on the pole for the 92-lap finale Saturday.

Gavin Tarras held off the early efforts of Joey Pederson to finish second. Tyler Peterson made a charge in the second half of the 15-lap dash to grab third, Jayson Good was fourth and Pederson was fifth.

Last year’s Seitz Memorial winner Cole Schill was set to start sixth on the grid Saturday with his dash finish, Konnor Sperle seventh, and Josh Skorczewski eighth.
