Prelude To The Johnny features go to Mass, Thomas, Randt and Greseth at River Cities Speedway

GRAND FORKS, ND (September 10) - The Prelude to the Johnny kicked off John Seitz Memorial weekend action Thursday, September 10 at River Cities Speedway.

Full programs in the WISSOTA Late Models, Modifieds, Midwest Mods and Street Stocks were on tap for race fans in Grand Forks, and winners parking their rides in victory lane included Dave Mass, Joseph Thomas, Landyn Randt and Cole Greseth.

Keith Tourville, Justin Vogel and Cole Greseth were the hornet’s nest of action up front to start the WISSOTA Street Stock feature. After trading sliders, Vogel edged out into the lead, while Greseth used the low side to take second. Tourville was third, and Blaine Barnes was fourth. Greg Jose was fifth before Parker Anderson got by with five laps in the books.

Anderson continued his charge to the front and took fourth, while out front Greseth continued to chip away at Vogel’s lead. A caution for Jose, who had drifted back through the field and had a flat tire, held the field under caution.

Back under green, Vogel held the lead as Tourville and Greseth raced side by side for second and Anderson poked his racer into the fight for top-five positioning. Greseth took the lead from Vogel and had a narrow advantage, as Vogel continued to work the high side and Greseth remained on the bottom. The advantage for Greseth with eight to go was a scant .110 of a second.

With four laps to go Greseth worked his way through lapped traffic and increased his lead, but Vogel fought back along the top side once again. Another lapped car in the preferred lane held Greseth up slightly, but he was able to hold on and grab the victory ahead of Vogel by .444 of a second. Tourville, Anderson and Hunter Carter finished in the top five.

Landyn Randt (Steven Young Photo)

Austin Hunter and Landyn Randt brought the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds to the green flag, but a caution before a lap could be completed regrouped the field.

Back underway Randt escaped to the early advantage, as Hunter fought off Dylan McCaughan and Matt Schow for second; Schow and Hunter made contact, while McCaughan drove into second. Another caution regrouped the field.

Randt remained the leader under green with just two laps complete, as Schow slipped past McCaughan for second. Berg did the same for third as McCaughan slipped back through the field and settled in fifth behind Berg before another wreck made turn three a parking lot.

Back under green Randt held the lead, while Berg and Schow argued over second, exchanging the position back and forth. McCaughan was steady in fourth, ahead of Hunter in fifth with 12 laps to go. Two laps later Hunter was applying heavy pressure on McCaughan, while out front Randt’s advantage had grown to more than 2.5 seconds.

Randt was stellar in lapped traffic and worked his way through in the waning laps to take the win ahead of Berg, Schow, McCaughan and Hunter in the top five.

Joseph Thomas (Steven Young Photo)

Joseph Thomas and Ward Imrie were the leaders to the green in the WISSOTA Modifieds, with Thomas besting Imrie out of turn four for the top spot. One lap later Ryan Gierke took third from Cole Chernosky, before Chernosky returned the favor with four complete. Scott Greer was fifth, just ahead of a charging Tyler Peterson.

With six laps in the books Thomas remained in control, with Imrie second and Chernosky third. Peterson slid past Gierke with nine laps completed for fourth.

As Thomas added to his 2.5-second lead out front, Imrie struggled with a lapped car and Chernosky and Peterson closed in. Peterson took third at the stripe with 12 laps to go, before a caution a lap later regrouped the field.

It was a two-car shootout out front for the lead back under green, as Peterson drove by into the top spot past Thomas. Gierke was third, Imrie was fourth, and Bryce Sward cracked the top five.

Peterson had a little less than a 1-second lead before the caution fell again with seven laps complete for a spun Scott Greer.

With the green flying back over the field, Thomas had a great restart and was nearly side by side with Peterson coming out of turn four. Peterson bobbled in turn two along the high side and Thomas shot back past into the lead. Gierke was third, Sward was fourth and Chernosky was fifth.

Thomas remained in control in the remaining laps, while Gierke displaced Peterson for second before the checkered flag. Sward completed his charge from 12th at the start to finish fourth, and Chernosky was fifth.

Dave Mass (Steven Young Photo)

Dave Mass and A.J. Diemel brought the field of NLRA WISSOTA Late Models to the green flag, with Mass holding the early advantage until lap three, when Diemel used the high side momentum to drive by for the top spot. Dustin Strand was third, Shane Edginton was fourth, and Zach Johnson was fifth to complete the first five laps.

With the top side treacherous, Diemel was able to pull away slightly when Mass bobbled in turn two, but two lanes of lapped traffic were just ahead for Diemel. In the race for the NLRA championship, Strand continued to hold third over Edginton in fourth, and Johnson remained in fifth with 11 laps complete.

As the laps continued to click off, Diemel and Mass took turns trying both high and low lanes to gain the advantage over one another. Back and forth they battled for the lead through lapped traffic. Strand and Edginton continued to hold third and fourth, respectively, and Johnson was fifth.

With three to go, the high side momentum out of turn two paid off for Mass, who shot past Diemel for the lead. From there he took the checkered flag and opening night check. Diemel, Strand, Edginton and James Giossi completed the top five.

Edginton’s fourth-place finish was good enough to secure the NLRA Series Championship.
