Tirrel, Pogones, Stark & Weisgram win Sunday stop at Watertown’s Casino Speedway

WATERTOWN, SD (August 2) -Tommy Pogones survived a late-race scare from Justin Vogel to win the DRC Street Stock Tour stop at Casino Speedway on Sunday night. Thomas Weisgram, Todd Stark and Dylan Tirrel also collected WISSOTA Dirt Track Series victories in Watertown.

Maria Broksieck and Tyler Lamb led the field of WISSOTA Street Stocks to the start of their 25-lap main event. Grady Myers squeezed under Broksieck out of turn two, and the pair were neck and neck, with Broksieck the leader of lap one by a whisker. Tommy Pogones joined the fray on the next lap, and Broksieck led lap two by another narrow margin, but had a little bigger lead the next time around. Myers remained persistent, though the two made contact into turn three on lap five and Broksieck spun; Justin Vogel and Tyler Lamb were also collected in the incident. Myers was sent to the tail for the restart.

Pogones looked to the outside of Broksieck after the restart, but Broksieck broke away after a few laps. Justin Vogel worked by Michael Bogh into third, and applied heavy pressure to Pogones near the halfway point. Vogel shouldered his way under Pogones, but a melee out of turn four brought out the caution.

Pogones charged to the outside of Broksieck after the restart in a bid for the lead; Broksieck narrowly led at the line to complete lap 15, but Pogones edged ahead to lead lap 16. He secured the top spot before the next caution on lap 17.

Vogel slid to second after the restart, and stayed on Pogones’ trunk lid. Vogel was nearly even with the leader with six laps to go, but could not make the move. With two laps to go, Vogel moved up to the high line in a bid to steal the win—he made the pass of turn four and led the field across the white flag, but the caution waved and negated the move.

Pogones once again led the field to the restart, and although Vogel tried to replicate the move, he could not do so and Pogones scored the feature win. Kammron Rose slipped by Broksieck before the white flag to finish third, and Myers recovered for a top five.

Ryan Flaten grabbed the lead when the 20-lap WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature took the green flag. Tommy Nichols was second with Luke Johnson third, and Todd Stark moved in to challenge for a podium position. The top four cars broke away a few laps into the race, and Nichols occasionally peaked under Flaten while the lead quartet remained close. The first caution waved with seven laps scored, and Johnson retired from the event under the stoppage.

Stark claimed second when the race resumed, and he and Flaten broke away from the rest of the pack. Stark turned up the heat a few laps after halfway, and looked to duck under the leader when a caution flag fell with seven laps remaining.

Stark was even with Flaten after the restart, but another caution a lap later involving Nichols, Jake Wranek and Scott Hansen marred the battle at the front of the pack.

Stark continued to hound Flaten after the restart, and raced to his inside in the turns. He slid in front of him out of turn two, secured the top spot down the back chute, and led the field to complete lap 18. Flaten dropped off the pace on the next circuit, and Dawson Zabel moved into second. Stark raced to his second win of the season in Watertown ahead of Zabel, Darren Engesser, Wranek and Scott Harrington.

Jayson Good held off Thomas Weisgram to lead the first of 20 laps in the WISSOTA Late Model main event. Weisgram took another shot at the lead on lap two, but Good remained out front. Trevor Anderson and Ryan Engels battled door to door for third, and Trevor Walsh joined that action a short time later. The first caution waved with five laps scored, and another fell before an additional lap was recorded.

Weisgram ducked under Good out of turn two after the restart, and completed the pass in turn three to steal the lead. Walsh and Anderson battled with Mike Stearns for third. Only a pair of laps were scored before a caution with 13 laps to go.

Weisgram slipped away after the restart, while Anderson used the low groove to challenge Good for second. Stearns made it a tight three-car battle for the spot before the caution fell again with half of the distance complete.

Weisgram slipped away after the restart, and Anderson secured the second position. Walsh and Stearns applied heavy pressure to Good before Good lost power and brought out a caution.

Weisgram was gone after the restart, and Walsh used the high groove to steal second from Anderson shortly after the green. Anderson made a late push, but could not regain the runner-up spot. Weisgram drove away to his first win of the season at the oval with Walsh second, Anderson third, Stearns fourth and Morgan Grosz fifth. The Late Model division still has yet to have a repeat winner.

Bradley Rossow led the opening lap of the WISSOTA Hornet feature over Jesse Lindner, while Lindner stayed close and looked to his inside on lap two. Dylan Tirrel and Paxton Tjaden were door to door behind Lindner before Tirrel looked low for second. Adam VanDerostyne charged under both drivers, and he and Tirrel were side by side for second before the caution fell on lap four of 12.

Rossow’s run at the front ended in the next set of turns after the restart when a flat tire caused him to make contact with the wall in turn one. The yellow flag appeared again.

Tirrel led the field to the restart, but immediately VanDerostyne challenged to his inside. He nosed ahead to the leader’s door handle nearly every turn, but Tirrel maintained his momentum. VanDerostyne did not relent, however he could not displace Tirrel, who captured his fourth win at the oval this season. VanDerostyne, Christian Kast, Lindner and Brett Moffenbier rounded out the top five.
