Broking, Nelson, Adams, Smith & Folstad grab checkers as Grand Rapids salutes the troops

GRAND RAPIDS, MN (July 30) - Bob Broking, Dylan Nelson, Blake Adams, McKenna Folstad and Jake Smith all collected victories Thursday at Grand Rapids Speedway, as the western Iron Range race track hosted Salute the Troops night honoring all those who have served our country.

After a first-lap caution for a car off the track in the woods, the WISSOTA Midwest Mods were led to green by Matthew Anderson and Sam Kolar. It was three wide for the lead to complete the lap, with Sam Blevins driving into the top spot ahead of Kolar. Behind them, Brennan Schmidt, Anderson and Blake Adams were vying for third. The next go round Adams took third and then drove by Kolar for second a lap later.

With Blevins along the bottom and Adams sticking to Grand Rapids' traditional line, Adams began to cut into Blevins’ lead as the laps wound down. Adams’ runs off the topside off of turn two were helping him gain the momentum, as Blevins had to deal with lapped traffic in his preferred line.

With five laps to go Adams was right to the bumper of Blevins, and he dove to the inside to blast into the lead. From there he pulled away to a several car-length advantage for the victory. Blevins, Schmidt, Michael Blevins, Sr. and Mikey Blevins completed the top five.

The green dropped over the WISSOTA Super Stock feature and Dylan Nelson immediately drove out front into the lead. Behind the No. 25, Chaston Finckbone was second, with Dalton Carlson and Kevin Salin arguing over third. Carlson displaced Finckbone and Tristan LaBarge moved into fourth. A caution for a spun car with six laps left regrouped the field.

Back under green Nelson held the lead as Carlson drove by Finckbone to second. LaBarge did the same a couple laps later for third, while Michael Blevins, Sr. appeared in the top five.

Nobody had anything for Nelson as he led the remainder of the race for the flag-to-flag victory. Carlson, LaBarge, Finckbone and Blevins, Sr. were top-five finishers.

Bob Broking and Mervin Castle III led the field of WISSOTA Modifieds to the green, with Broking having the advantage during the first lap. Castle was close behind in second, as Lance Schilling and Chris Magistad fought back and fourth for third, with Blake Adams quickly making his way to the front from eighth. A yellow flew for T.J. Heinle, who was stalled on the backstretch.

Broking continued to hold on in the lead, though Castle was never quite far behind. Magistad was third, and Adams and Tanner Gehl battled for fourth before Gehl grabbed the spot. A lap or so later Adams left the track with mechanical issues.

Broking continued to hit his marks and took the victory ahead of Castle, Magistad, Gehl and Schilling to complete the top five.

McKenna Folstad was the early leader after a first-lap caution in the WISSOTA Hornet feature. They raced three and four-wide behind her. Astion Schelde shook out into second before another caution regrouped the field.

Back underway, Folstad continued to lead Schelde, who was joined by Trenton Beel. The caution fell again, this time for Asher Tuttle.

Folstad held her narrow lead back under green, with pressure from Beel. Schelde and Ruzich were close behind; Ruzich made his way to third, and was then side by side with Beel.

Out front McKenna escaped with the win out of the three-way shootout, while Ruzich was second. Beel was third, while Schelde and Zeb Graves completed the top five.

Alex Berg had the lead early on in the WISSOTA Pure Stocks, as Jake Smith and Austin Carlson took advantage of a car off the pace and drove into second and third. Two laps later Smith used the inside line to drive by Berg and take the lead at the flagstand before a yellow flag flew for a spun racer in turn one.

Smith regained the lead when the field took the green flag, and Carlson followed him into second. Austin Fencl and Berg were side by side for third before another caution, this time for debris on the track.

With the green back out over the field, Smith continued on his merry way and took the victory, with Carlson right behind. Fencl, Berg and Dylan Elhardt rounded out the top five.

In the Northern Renegades feature, Chris Lewis drove from the pole to victory lane.
