Fair races begin at Grand Rapids and night one features go to Schwinn, Smith and Carlson

GRAND RAPIDS, MN (August 20) - The first night of racing action as part of the annual Itasca County Fair week got underway Wednesday at Grand Rapids Speedway in Grand Rapids, MN.

Three WISSOTA Dirt Track Series classes were part of the program, including the Mod Fours, Hornets and Pure Stocks. Winners included Ashton Schwinn, Tucker Smith and Austin Carlson.

Gerrald Nohner and Chad Funt brought the field of WISSOTA Mod Fours to the green flag, with Funt the early leader. Nohner bobbled a few laps in and that allowed Conrad Schwinn to get by into second, with Ashton Schwinn and Connor Bruss also getting by Nohner to third and fourth. A couple laps later Ashton drove by Conrad to second, with Bruss also driving by and supplanting Conrad to fourth.

Out front Ashton grabbed the lead from Funt after a lap of side-by-side action with about six to go, and Bruss and Funt then traded second back and forth in the closing laps. Ashton Schwinn took the checkered flag ahead of Bruss, Funt, Conrad Schwinn and Nohner in the top five.

Tucker Smith (Jennifer Tomczyk Photo)

Tucker Smith was the early leader of the WISSOTA Hornet feature from the front row, with Nick Ruzich making his way around Asher Tuttle to second with Mikayla LaBarge in the mix as well.

Following a caution, Smith took off into the lead once again, with Ruzich and LaBarge remaining in the top three.

As the laps wound down, Ruzich pulled into a challenging position but could not get close enough for a pass and Smith grabbed the victory. Ruzich, LaBarge, 11th-starter William Lange and McKenna Folstad rounded out the top five.

Austin Carlson (Jennifer Tomczyk Photo)

In the WISSOTA Pure Stocks, Austin Carlson was the early leader ahead of Mason Smith and Jake Smith, as Alex Berg slipped back one spot to fourth during the initial lap. As they headed into turns three and four, Berg was hit hard in the driver’s side by Jenny Smith and both cars rolled into turn four, bringing out the red flag. Both drivers were okay.

Back under green Carlson continued to lead Mason and Jake Smith in the top three. Bob Klein was fourth, but had pressure from Dylan Elhardt for the spot.

Out front Carlson was under heavy pressure from Mason Smith; a yellow in the closing laps for a Bob Klein spin brought the field back together.

With the green back out, Carlson pulled away as the laps clicked off and he took the checkered flag ahead of Mason Smith, Jake Smith, Elhardt and Karen Puschinsky in the top five.

Chris Lewis won the Northern Renegade feature.
