Searing scores second straight Challenge Series win as WISSOTA Late Models rocket around Princeton oval

From FYE Motorsports Promotions and Track Reports

PRINCETON, MN (August 14) - The Structural Buildings WISSOTA Late Model Challenge Series made the second stop of its four-night racing weekend Friday, August 14 at Princeton Speedway. Cole Searing topped the feature to highlight action, while other WISSOTA Dirt Track Series winners included Dexton Koch, Jason VandeKamp, Clayton Wagamon, Dustin Holtquist and Layla Chaplin.

A field of 15 WISSOTA Late Model competitors were on hand. Cory Crapser set fast time and a new Princeton Speedway track record with a lap of 12.608 seconds around the tight quarter-mile clay oval.

Dave Mass and Searing earned the front row for the night’s $3,000-to-win, 40-lap feature event with Mass racing into the lead from the pole and getting the upper hand as the field rumbled into the first set of turns. Searing was able to pull up alongside Mass for the lead on the opening lap as the duo crossed the start/finish line nearly dead even, before Mass moved into the top spot. Meanwhile Dexton Koch, Billy Kendall and Tyler Peterson were nearly three-wide for third.

Mass hopped up to the cushion with Searing in tow as the remainder of the field tried to race toward the leaders. Kendall slipped by Koch into third on lap seven, just prior to the first caution of the feature for a Jeff Massingill spin in turn two.

On the restart, Mass once again took off in the top spot with Searing close behind, while Peterson, Kendall and Kevin Burdick were in a thrilling battle for third. Mass continued to roll around up front until he slipped over the turn two banking just enough to allow Searing to race by to the lead. Mass was able to collect himself and hang onto second as the field tightened up behind him.

Burdick flashed to the inside of Mass for second just past the halfway point and the race for second continued to be outstanding until the second and final caution of the event flew on lap 29 for a medical situation.

The final restart of the night came with just 11 laps to go and as Searing raced along out front, Mass and Burdick battled for the runner-up spot, while Peterson, Kendall and Johnny Broking were all throwing sliders at each other for a shot at a top-five finish. Meanwhile, back out front, Searing raced off to his second straight series win and 11th career series victory.

The remainder of the top five at the line were Burdick, Peterson, Mass and Kendall.

Jason VandeKamp (Michael Wadsen Photo)

Jason VandeKamp won the WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature from his seventh-starting spot. He grabbed the checkered flag ahead of Erik Gruhlke, Dustin Nelson, Ryan Putnam and Kris Macko in the top five.

Layla Chaplin won the WISSOTA Street Stock feature. Though she started on the pole, she had to pit to change a tire early on in the event. She then worked her way back through the field to capture her second feature victory in the class. Jim Gullikson, Tommy Pogones, Kyle Howland and Charlie Shiek completed the top five.
