Searing sprints off front row to win WISSOTA Challenge Series stop at KRA Speedway Thursday

WILLMAR, MN (August 13) - The Structural Buildings WISSOTA Late Model Challenge Series kicked off a four-night racing weekend Thursday, with 17 wheelmen on hand for action. The WISSOTA Midwest Mods and Street Stocks were also part of the action, with Landyn Randt and Justin Vogel topping sanctioned action in those classes.

Cole Searing and Ryan Mikkelson earned the front row for the night’s $3,000-to-win, 40-lap feature event. Searing raced into the lead from the pole and had the upper hand as the field rumbled into the first set of turns. Mikkelson pulled up alongside Searing for the lead on the opening lap, as the duo crossed the start/finish line nearly dead even before Searing took the top spot. Cory Crapser raced to the inside of Mikkelson’s No. 15* for second during lap two.

Searing led the way out front while Mikkelson settled into second early, as the field raced the opening 10 circuits without issue. Just as Searing began to work through the back of the field, the first caution flew on lap 11 for a Scott Lehn and Dave Mass tangle.

On the restart, Searing once again took off in the top spot, but the caution blinked right back on as Mikkelson clipped the wall on the restart and collected Sabraski as well. Sabraski was okay to continue and Mikkelson headed to the pits for a tire change.

Several more quick cautions kept the field tight and allowed everyone to stay on Searing’s bumper out front. As laps began to wind down, lapped traffic became a factor again. Tenth-starter Kevin Burdick appeared in the top three while the leaders worked through traffic with fewer than 10 laps remaining.

The final restart of the night came with just five laps to go and as Searing raced alone out front, and Mass and Burdick battled for the runner-up spot. Burdick got second - and hard charger honors - with second at the line, while out front Searing raced to his third straight series win at KRA and 10th series victory.

Mass, Sabraski and Johnny Broking completed the top five.

The WISSOTA Street Stocks were led to green by Derek Zieske and Ethan Iiams. Three laps into the race Justin Vogel came charging through to take the lead. With 11 laps left in the race Keith Tourville came from eighth to move into third, and then second, as he tried to run down Vogel.

With six laps to go a yellow reset the field, and Tourville and Vogel were side by side. It was a great battle until the end with Vogel grabbing the win followed by Tourville, Iiams, Joe Martin, and Brady Schultz in the top five.

The 16-lap WISSOTA Midwest Mod feature was led early by Justin VanEps, with the red-hot Landyn Randt in close pursuit. With 12 laps left Randt took the lead. The talk of the night was Shane Sabraski back in a new Midwest Mod, and he came from 12th and moved up to third before a late spin ended his chase. Out front Randt grabbed a very impressive win with Jake Smith strong in second. VanEps, Jason Vejtruba and Justin Bjorklund were top-five finishers.

Mason Fester won the Pure Stock feature to round out the night.
