Becker, Peterson, Nelson and Serr stand in victory lane after Saturday’s DSFS feature events

HURON, SD (August 8) - While the younger fans were treated to games and prizes during Kid’s Night on Saturday at Dakota State Fair Speedway, the rest of those in attendance were treated to some highly competitive feature events.

WISSOTA Dirt Track Series winners during the program included Chris Serr, Trevor Nelson, Jayme Peterson and Chad Becker.

Kicking things off was the WISSOTA Street Stock main event, with Broc Stout holding just a five-point lead in standings entering the night.

Stout and Chris Serr, who was third in the standings, locked in a battle for the top spot from the start of the 15-lap feature race. Serr started third on the 17-car grid, while Stout was a row back in the fifth starting spot.

Serr took the point on the opening lap with Stout right on his back bumper, and the two stayed that way until they reached the tail end of the field on lap seven. Serr went to the high side and was able to clear the slower car, while Stout was caught on the bottom of the track and unfortunately clipped it, resulting in a spin.

The call went on Stout and he was sent to the rear of the field. However, just two laps later he was back among the leaders, fighting for a spot in the top five.

While Serr maintained his hold on the top spot, the battle for second proved to be the one to watch down the stretch. Matt Goth, who started sixth, snagged second on the restart and finished in that position, while James Hoing, who was second to Stout in the point standings, was third.

Maria Broksieck, who has three wins this season at the Huron track, held off Stout for fourth.

“I kept hearing phantom motor noises, so I kept pushing hard,” Serr said of his trek to victory lane. “I got a gift starting up front and was able to capitalize.

“Coming into tonight our goal was to win the final two races,” he said of his push for the championship. “We have another one to go.”

It was the second win of the season for Serr.

When things all shook out in the standings after Saturday’s program, Stout was left with just a two-point edge over Hoing with just one night of racing remaining. Serr is just nine points behind the leader, while Broksieck and Clifford Houser are fourth and fifth, respectively.

Jayme Peterson added to his lead in the WISSOTA Midwest Modified point standings with his first win of the season on Saturday.

After starting on the inside of the second row, the path to the front took a while to develop for Peterson.

Luke Johnson took the lead from his starting spot on the outside of the front row at the start and maintained the advantage for the 12 laps of the 15-lap feature race.

Johnson’s father, Lorin, started on the pole and settled in the second spot for the first four laps. He dropped to third when Peterson used the low groove coming out of turn two to swipe second.

Peterson then set his sights on the leader as the laps ticked away. He was able to close the gap and snagged the lead with three laps remaining as he moved to the low side to get past Luke Johnson coming out of turn four. He led the final two revolutions to secure the victory, which was the third of his career at DSFS and first since June 8, 2024.

“We put a lot of work on this car this week and figured some things out,” Peterson said. “I could see Luke was getting tight so I got up on the wheel after that.”

Luke Johnson was second, followed by Lorin Johnson, Jace Baloun and Scott Hansen.

Peterson now has 487 points, which gives him a 22-point edge over Jake Wranek with one race remaining. Baloun trails Wranek by a single point. Hansen is fourth, while Loring Johnson is fifth.

Trevor Nelson inked his fifth win of the season in the WISSOTA Super Stock division. He needed to avoid disaster on the opening lap to accomplish the task.

Nelson started on the outside of the second row in the 15-lap feature race and found himself facing the wrong way between turns one and two on the opening lap as the rest of the 13-car field made its way past. Fortunately he escaped without any damage and was able to continue.

“We got spun out there and was just lucky enough that nobody collected us, and we were able to finish a race,” Nelson said. “Once you are that far up front and you spin, you’re just bracing for impact pretty much.”

The field was re-racked for a complete restart and Nelson snagged the lead on the opening lap with Bryson North in tow. They maintained the top two spots, respectively, for the entirety of the feature race.

“We’ve been testing all year long and now we're finally, hopefully, starting to get everything put together the right way,” Nelson said. “In the heat race, the track was definitely fast, and it was fast in the feature.”

Austin Arbogast grabbed third from Robin Schmitt on the third lap and finished in that spot. Wyatt Schweigert was fourth, while Schmitt was fifth.

The victory, which was the 11th of his career, gave Nelson an insurmountable 64-point lead in the Super Stock standings, allowing him to clinch his first track title at DSFS. His father, Gregg, is a three-time track champion in the Super Stock division at the Huron track.

“That's definitely cool, you know,” Nelson said of joining his father on the lists of track champions. “Before it was closed down, you know, I raced here a lot, and (Cole) Searing always won them, you know, and now to win one with Dad is cool.

“I don't know how many he's got now, but just to have your name in the books like that, it's a pretty neat deal,” he said.

Brad Kopecky is second in the standings, with just a 5-point edge over Arbogast. North is fourth and Schweigert is fifth.

Chad Becker led from start to finish in the 20-lap WISSOTA Late Model main event. It was his second win of the season and win No. 28 of his career at the Huron track.

“The track was fast with two lanes. I run the top for half the race, then I run the bottom, the other half of the race,” said Becker, who started on the outside of the front row. “I have to give them credit on that - the track came around really good late in the night. It got pretty fast, so it was fun.”

Josh Skorczewski, who started third, moved to second on the first lap and stayed there. Chase Gelling was third, followed by Justin Karlen and Ryan Baumgart.

Skorczewski holds a 38-point lead ahead of Karlen in the Late Model point standings, with one race remaining. Becker is third, five points behind Karlen.
