Glenz gets past Doar to score second straight western Wisconsin Challenge Series win at Rice Lake Speedway

RICE LAKE, WI (August 8) - The wait was worth it. The WISSOTA Late Models had not made an appearance at Rice Lake Speedway for two years, but the 37 drivers who signed in to race Saturday put on a great show. In a feature race that came right down to the final laps, Jesse Glenz slid past race-long leader Pat Doar and held on through the remaining laps to win.

Other winners in WISSOTA Dirt Track Series action included Blake Adams, Shawn Amundson, and Shane Sabraski.

Doar started on the outside pole of the WISSOTA Late Model feature and he used the top side of the track to drive into the early lead ahead of Cory Crapser and Glenz in an argument over second. Doar continued to ride the cushion while other drivers started to experiment by running lines lower on the track. By the 10-lap mark, Glenz moved into second and was starting to close on Doar, while Crapser moved up to third ahead of Jake Redetzke and Adam Hensel, who had started on the pole, but was slipping back slightly.

Doar continued to show the way with Glenz now racing just a couple of car lengths behind the leader and pushing hard, as both continued to work the cushion. Crapser started to make the low line work as he closed in on the front two. While he was not able to complete a pass, he did put pressure on Glenz for second.

The laps continued to click off rapidly with the field remaining under the green and the leaders starting to catch the back of the field. Chad Mahder moved into fifth and started to challenge Redetzke for fourth.

Kevin Burdick also started to move forward; he started 11th and was working his way toward the front of the field, using both the high and low side of the track.

The race began to play out as two battles for position, with Doar having Glenz tight behind him and Crapser still occasionally nosing his way into a challenging position. And while they went at it, the battle for fourth was extremely tight with Redetzke, Mahder, Burdick and Hensel jockeying back and forth for that spot.

As the laps quickly ran down, Glenz seemed to pick up the pace. He was driving extremely hard into the corners and throwing his car hard into the cushion; he closed several times to the rear bumper of Doar, but Doar continued to run his line and Glenz just did not have the speed to drive by him.

As the race drew to a close with just five laps to go, Glenz made a final push. As Doar approached another slower car that he had to get past, Glenz made a strong push down the back chute and in turn three, threw a slider that allowed him to get between the slower car and Doar. He beat Doar out of turn four and with just three laps to go, took over the lead.

Doar tried to fight back, but Glenz was very fast, moving out to a several-car-length lead. Glenz drove across the line for the win ahead of Doar, while Crapser made the low line work for a third place finish.

Burdick concluded his determined drive up through the field as he edged past Redetzke to come home fourth.

A tight early race battle between Amundson and Nick Traynor started the WISSOTA Street Stock feature off in fine fashion. In fact, the two exchanged the lead three times during the first five laps of the race. Traynor grabbed the initial lead, if only by inches on the opening lap, as Nick three-wheeled through the corners and Amundson ran the lower line. One lap later Amundson edged in front at the line, but then on the following lap, Traynor again took away the top spot.

Finally, on lap five, Amundson again took over the lead and he remained out front the rest of the race. Traynor stayed within a few car lengths past the halfway point of the race, but he then suffered a serious mechanical issue that saw him slow on the track and then pull into the infield, done for the night.

Amundson was not yet in the clear though, as after Cole Richards and Hunter VanGilder battled for second, VanGilder got a great run on a restart after a lap 11 collision brought out the second and final yellow of the race.

VanGilder surged up to second when the race resumed and closely followed Amundson, but Amundson held his line and VanGilder just could not muster the speed to drive around him on the high side, settling for second as Amundson drove home for his fifth feature win of the year at the track. Point leader Richards settled for third while Charlie Pitcavage had his best finish of the year, coming home fourth ahead of Layla Chaplin.

The WISSOTA Super Stock feature started out with a great battle for the lead among three drivers, before things slipped a bit at the end, with several yellow flags for spins bogging down the concluding laps.

Jesse Redetzke used the outside pole to get the initial jump on Leslie Leu and take the early lead. Soon, Redetzke was challenged by both Alex Myers and Ryan Olson, who were pushing him hard. Meanwhile, both Sabraski and Dexton Koch were marching quickly to the front of the pack, having started in the fifth and fourth rows, respectively.

Olson used the outside line to drive past Redetzke on lap five for the lead with Myers, Koch and Leu all close behind. Koch and Sabraski had moved to second and third by the halfway point of the race.

A yellow just at the halfway point for a spinning car slowed the action. Following the restart, Sabraski showed great speed as he drove by both Koch and Olson to take over out front. A restart went bad following another caution, and it was the worst crash of the night by far.

The leaders got a bit out of shape and Myers was forced into a spin, with him sitting in a very vulnerable position as the field barreled down on him. He was crashed into by several drivers, the hardest hit coming from Jeff Eisner, Jr. Myers flipped over once before coming back to earth. Several cars were damaged and Myers, Eisner, Eric Olson and Tommy Richards were all eliminated, but the drivers were uninjured.

The spinning still was not finished, though and after it continued twice more, track officials called for a single-file restart, which allowed the race to conclude. Sabraski took off at a fast pace and while Koch pushed his car as hard as he could, he just could not match the speed of Sabraski who drove home for the win. Ryan Olson held on for third ahead of Redetzke and Shane Kisling.

For Sabraski, who rarely races at the speedway, it was his first Super Stock feature win here since the 2023 racing season. It comes at a good time, as he continues his battle for the WISSOTA Super Stock National Championship yet again.

Sabraski then jumped out of his Super Stock and into his WISSOTA Modified, where he then competed in the closest race of the night, a Modified feature that was not decided until the final straightaway of the race.

Sabraski had the outside pole for the Modified feature, but Kennedy Swan took off at a blistering pace and led the opening part of the race. She was flying on the cushion as she pulled away from Sabraski and the field, only slowed by a lap-nine caution for a spinning driver.

She continued to lead on the restart, before Sabraski made some attempts to pass her. Swan continued to hold the top spot past the halfway point of the race.

Things started to get tight for the lead though, with Sabraski upping the pressure and Swan searching for a line that might hold him off. Finally, on lap 14, Sabraski drove under her off turn four and took over out front.

Swan fought back though as the leaders were dangerously close together down the front chute and when Sabraski dove low to hold her off, Swan lost control and spun in turn one, slowing the race and ending her great run. She went to the back of the pack and eventually ended up 10th.

However, Sabraski now inherited a new challenger, Blake Adams. Adams, who had started eighth and was up to fourth by the halfway point of the race, started next to Mike Anderson and just behind Sabraski with the field reracked.

Adams got a great restart and pulled up alongside Sabraski, and a battle broke out between the two drivers, currently ranked first and second in WISSOTA National Modified point standings. Adams was running the cushion while Sabraski experimented using several different lines.

Down the front chute, Adams edged ahead on lap 17 but they were just inches apart. They continued this fight, again still side by side. As the white flag waved, they were still locked together.

Down the back chute, Sabraski edged ahead by inches, but Adams made a strong run off the final corner and as they roared to the line, Blake edged ahead, winning by less than a car length in a thrilling conclusion to the night's racing.

Mike Anderson finished a strong third with Kaden Blaeser and Matt Leer next in line. With Adams’ win, he edged back in front of Leer for the top spot in the track Modified point standings as the season quickly winds down.

Racing action continues next Saturday night at 7 pm. A full five class program of WISSOTA racing will be featured. There are only two more point nights in the 2026 racing season and several very close races yet to be determined.

Along with the five division program, it will be Hall of Fame night at the track with 2026 inductees Mike Anderson, Bob Ellis, Mitch Hansen, Steve Laursen and The Wild Hogs all being added to the speedway's Hall of Fame.
