As Princeton Speedway celebrates 70 years, Erickson, Nelson, VandeKamp, Pogones and Holtquist visit victory lane

PRINCETON, MN (June 5) - With nearby tracks forced to cancel due to storms and rain, Princeton Speedway completed Friday night’s WISSOTA Dirt Track Series program in its entirety.

The 70th anniversary of the speedway was celebrated with events throughout the night, while on track Tanner Erickson, Dylan Nelson, Jason VandeKamp, Tommy Pogones, Dustin Holtquist and Wayne Nelson celebrated in victory lane.

Chance Kodet and Jason VandeKamp brought the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds to the green as the night’s features began. VandeKamp sped away with Landyn Randt in second and Parker Frolik in third.

An early caution reset the field, and VandeKamp sped away with the lead while Randt had Ryan Putnam and Dustin Nelson close behind. Putnam secured second and chased after VandeKamp, and with a few laps to go, Putnam was within a car length of the leader. VandeKamp was steady outfront, however, and took the win. Putnam, Randt, Nelson and Ariel Mueller completed the top five.

The WISSOTA Street Stocks took the green and were four wide as they exited turn one among Tommy Pogones, Thomas Worth, Braedyn Fleck and Levi Randt. Pogones nosed out the lead with Randt and Worth to his rear.

A couple of cautions kept the racers on their feet, but when the checkered flag waved, Pogones took the win. Randt ran second most of the race and had company as Kyle Howland kept glued to his door during the final laps. Randt grabbed second with Howland, Fleck and Worth wrapping up the top five.

Tanner Erickson (Mark Anderson Photo)

Eric Lamm was the early leader of the WISSOTA Modified feature, with pressure from Adam Bohlman and Brennan Gave. An early caution occurred and mechanical issues ended Bohlman’s night as Lamm brought the drivers back to green. Tanner Erickson and Gave fought for second a few laps until Erickson pulled away with the position. Erickson looked ahead to Lamm before the yellow flag waved again.

Erickson kept close to Lamm following the restart, with a charging Clayton Wagamon in third. The top three raced the high line as Wagamon dropped low to challenge Erickson. Lamm then drifted over the track’s edge and took his car to the pits.

With just three laps to go, Erickson was in command with Wagamon and Ryan Gierke to his bumper. Erickson, Wagamon and Gierke were three-wide in the turn when the green waved, but Erickson pulled ahead, led the final laps and took the checkered flag. Wagamon, Gierke, Brennan Gave and Zach Benson finished in the top five.

Dustin Holtquist (Mark Anderson Photo)

Dean Larson and Thomas Burgaard raced door to door during the opening lap of the WISSOTA Mod Four feature, while Doug Frederick, Gerry Nohner, Dustin Holtquist and Jacob Husnik raced nearly four wide for third. Burgaard grabbed the lead with Larson and Nohner as the top three with a handful of laps in the books.

Following a caution with nine laps completed, Burgaard led the drivers back to green, but Holtquist and Larson made it three wide. Holtquist held the top position the remainder of the race, through cautions, and took his ride to victory lane to remain undefeated at Princeton this season. Connor Bruss finished second with Burgaard, Nohner and Larson in the top five.

Dylan Nelson (Mark Anderson Photo)

The WISSOTA Super Stocks closed out the night’s races with Brayden Hedtke and Chris Wark on row one. The Supers remained door to door the opening lap, but Wark nosed out with the lead. Dylan Nelson challenged Hedtke for second; Nelson took second and kept close to Wark as they put John Dufour down a lap. Laps passed by with Nelson glued to Wark, and as they encountered slower traffic, a caution reset the field.

Wark was in command on the restart, but Nelson and Hedtke moved in to pressure for the spot. The top three were three wide in the turns until Nelson pulled ahead with the lead. Nelson drove on to the win followed by Dylan Kromschroeder, Hedtke, Wark and Austin Niemeyer in the top five.

Wayne Nelson took the win in the Crown Vics, with heavy pressure in the late stages from Marcus Ammerman. Jeff Hass, Calvin Saldana and Joe Strandlien completed the top five.
