Well-known cast of characters put speedy rides in victory lane at Thunder City Speedway

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO (June 24) - It was a cast of well-known characters in victory lane Wednesday night, as Cole Chernosky, David Simpson, Rick Simpson, Jesse Owen and Brendan Makkinga took the wins in WISSOTA-sanctioned action at Thunder City Speedway.

Chernosky took the lead from the get-go and topped the WISSOTA Modifieds after 20 laps around the Thunder Bay-area oval. Riley Matthews was second by about 1.5 seconds, followed by Tanner Henderson, ninth-starter John Toppozini and Scott McKinnon in the top five.

David Simpson started outside the second row of the WISSOTA Midwest Mod feature and it took only a few laps to vault into the lead. From there, he set off to a more than 4 second advantage 20 laps later at the checkered flag. Kevin Monteith, Michael Shalley, Curtis Stieh and Wayne deBruin rounded out the top five.

In the WISSOTA Super Stocks, Simpson started from the pole and led every lap en route to the checkered flag. He finished 3.5 seconds ahead of Nathan Roy, who started and finished second. Cole Chernosky, Danny Young and Tyler Kostecki completed the top five.

Makkinga scored his third victory of the 2026 season in the WISSOTA Street Stocks. He moved from his fifth-row starting spot and with just a handful of laps to go, took the lead and the win. Nathan Henny climbed six spots to second, Darren Wolframe was third, Kyle Bolt was fourth and 14th-starter A.J. Kellar was fifth.

Owen used his front-row starting spot to his best advantage, taking the victory in the WISSOTA Hornets, crossing the start/finish line just ahead of Selena Owen by .407 seconds. Taylor Scaffeo, Martin Bolt and Sam Bolt were top-five finishers.
