Chernosky churns out a pair of sweeps and is joined by Shelley, Makkinga & Owen in Thunder City victory lane

THUNDER BAY, ON (June 17) - Cole Chernosky recorded a pair of clean sweeps Wednesday night at Thunder City Speedway. He went a perfect four-for-four between his heat and feature races in the WISSOTA Modifieds and Super Stocks.

Michael Shalley, Brendan Makkinga and Selena Owen also scored WISSOTA feature wins at the top-drawing track in Canada.

Chernosky watched Brandon Copp win the first WISSOTA Modified heat race, then duplicated that feat in the second Mod heat.

Later, in the headlining division’s feature, Chernosky topped Copp as the duo finished one-two. Chernosky started on the pole while Copp started in row three in the Modified finale. Riley Matthews raced from sixth to third in the contest, followed by Curtis Stieh and Danny Young.

Chernosky won the first of two Super Stock heats (Rick Simpson won the other), then zipped from third to first to get the feature win in the nightcap. Simpson was the runner-up followed by Shawn Polonoski in third, Nathan Roy fourth and Young, also a dual-division driver, was fifth in the 15-car field.

Michael Shalley (Makenna Burke Photo)

Shalley was the night’s king in the largest class, the WISSOTA Midwest Mods. The hometown driver raced from fourth to the head of the class in the feature. Jamie Davis from Fort Frances, ON was second, Murillo’s Tanner Olakovic powered from ninth to third, Curtis Stieh was fourth and Davis Simpson was fifth. Hunter Brink was the hard charger; he came from 13th to sixth.

Dan Tocheri, Stieh, Davis and Simpson were the heat winners, and the B features were won by Kevin Monteith and Kyle Monteith.

Brendan Makkinga (Makenna Burke Photo)

Brendan Makkinga downed a stacked field of WISSOTA Street Stocks Wednesday. He was able to get to the front, after starting third, before sixth starter Nathan Henny got there. So Henny settled for the runner-up finish with Juston Tougas third. Kyle Bolt picked up five spots to finish fourth and AJ Kellar rounded out the top five. Several drivers further back made even bigger moves in the feature: Jack Williamson went from 19th to eighth, Steven Piilo drove from 18th to 11th and David Mitchel moved up from 20th to 13th in the race.

Selena Owen (Makenna Burke Photo)

Selena Owen started and stayed up front in the 16-car WISSOTA Hornet feature. Brady Fosso made his trip from Hibbing, MN pay off with a second place finish and Jesse Owen was third. Martin Bolt finished fourth and the previous week’s winner, Jimmy Owen, was fifth this time around.

Trip Wolframe won the Junior Slingshot feature.
