WATERTOWN, SD (May 25) - Michael Bogh earned a trip to Casino Speedway victory lane after a last-lap pass in the Street Stock main event on Sunday night. Jeff Rohner topped a thrilling Hornet main event, while Chad Becker, Mike Stearns and Tommy Nichols each pocketed a victory during the second night of competition at the Watertown oval.
Jodie Michaelsohn grabbed the initial lead in the 20-lap WISSOTA Street Stock main event with Jayden Michaelsohn applying pressure in second. After a few laps, Jodie Michaelsohn inched away while Jayden had a small gap over Bogh and Wade Tirrel, who led a pack of seven cars battling for third. Trey Hess advanced through the traffic and challenged Tirrel for fourth before the caution waved with 10 laps scored.
Hess made an aggressive move on the inside after the restart, and executed a three-wide pass to get to second, but Bogh used the cushion to rally to second on lap 12. Hess and Bogh raced door to door for second, Andy Rossow joined the mix, and the trio closed in on Jodie Michaelsohn at the front of the pack. The top drivers had tightened with three laps to go, and they were under a blanket as they crossed the white flag. Hess charged into turn two and touched the left rear of Michaelsohn while Bogh circled the high groove and nosed to the point. Bogh sailed out of turn four to grab the checkers with Jodie Michaelsohn second, Rossow third, Hess fourth and Jayden Michaelsohn fifth.
Brayden Begalka and Bradley Rossow battled for the lead at the drop of the green in the WISSOTA Hornet main event. After a few laps, Begalka settled into the point, but Jeff Rohner and Hunter Goulet joined the mix and raced three wide with Rossow for second. The pair shed Rossow by the halfway point, and continued to race door to door while on the bumper of the leader.
With less than two laps to go, the door opened up on the inside for Rohner, and he pulled even with Begalka down the back chute; they were neck and neck under the white flag, and although Rohner took the advantage out of turn two, Begalka sent his machine deep into turn three in front of Rohner, but Rohner was able to turn his machine down the hill and win the race to the checkered flag for his second feature win in a row at the speedway. Begalka was second ahead of Goulet, Rossow and Joshua Gebhart.
Chad Becker (Cody Papke Photo)
Chad Becker and Konner Sperle shared the front row for the 25-lap WISSOTA Late Model main event. Sperle blasted to the lead on the high side and Becker gave chase down low. Sperle paced the first three laps, but Becker edged ahead down the back chute on lap four and led at the flag stand before the first caution waved.
Sperle had to contend with Josh Skorczewski after the restart, and a miscue from Sperle dropped him from the top five. Trevor Anderson and Jayson Good battled for third before another yellow with seven scored. The yellow waved again when Scott Ward careened off the track in turn one, but came to a stop before the pit area. Skorczewski retired from the event with damage to his machine.
Becker remained the leader after the restart, and although Good stayed with him for a few laps, Becker was never seriously threatened en route to his victory. Good finished second while Charlie Olsen displaced Lee Grosz for third around the halfway point in the race. Chad Olsen rounded out the top five.
Mike Stearns (Cody Papke Photo)
Tony Konold used the cushion to win the battle for the lead on the opening lap of the 20-lap WISSOTA Modified feature, but Mike Stearns claimed the spot with a move out of turn four on the next lap. Konold stayed close while Adam Brotherton settled into third before a caution on lap five.
Things got dicey for third after the restart; Garrett Gross held the spot briefly before Nate Heinrich stole the spot. Heinrich remained under heavy pressure from Gross.
Stearns’ lead was a few car lengths at the crossed flags. He opened a little ground just after halfway, but Konold charged again with five laps to go. While Konold mounted a challenge for the lead, Gross’ strong run for the final podium position ended as he skidded to a stop along the backstretch wall.
After the restart, Stearns remained strong to grab the feature win with Konold second. Heinrich turned back Tyler Peterson to keep third, and Brotherton rounded out the top five.
Tommy Nichols (Cody Papke Photo)
Luke Johnson battled with Jake Wranek over the opening few rounds of the 20-lap WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature. Johnson secured the top spot and Tommy Nichols moved in to challenge Wranek. Todd Stark displaced Wranek for third before the caution waved with five laps recorded.
Nichols in the low groove, and Johnson in the high groove spent the next two laps door to door; Johnson led lap six by a nose, but Nichols was ahead on lap seven before another caution. After a few more restarts, Nichols held the top spot ahead of Stark and Dawson Zabel. Stark used the cushion to charge ahead on lap 12, but Nichols regained the lead on lap 13 before another caution.
Nichols switched his groove after the restart, and moved to the high side of turns three and four. He edged away from the pack while Zabel and Stark fought for second. Stark slipped over the cushion and fell to fifth in turn two, but found an opening to regain third out of turn four.
A late caution set up a two-lap dash to the finish, and Stark snatched second, but the race came to a slightly premature end when a spin after the field had taken the white brought out the yellow and checkers.
Nichols was the winner with Stark second, Zabel third, Wranek fourth and Johnson fifth.
Bodie Croninger withstood several challenges in the middle of the Gen X Late Model feature, but could not turn back a slide job from Matthew Larson with just over five laps remaining. Larson raced to the feature win ahead of Croninger, Trevor Walsh, Scott Harrington and 13th-starter Curt Kranz.
