Gave, Kromschroeder, Putnam, Pogones & Ammerman put up ‘80s Night wins at Princeton Speedway
By Tami Jo Kuehn
PRINCETON, MN (May 15) - Princeton Speedway continued to celebrate its 70th season with ’80s Night on Friday. The event featured great WISSOTA Dirt Track Series action, with wins from Brennan Gave, Dylan Kromschroeder, Ryan Putnam, Tommy Pogones and Marcus Ammerman.
The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds kicked off the night’s feature events. Tate Kostreba and Ryan Putnam led the field to green, and Putnam sped away with the immediate lead, with Kostreba in second. Kris Macko, Kevin Yeager and Dustin Nelson battled three wide for third and remained close as Jason VandeKamp moved in.
Out front, Putnam and Kostreba pulled away from the field, but the battle for third continued. Laps passed by quickly, and at the end of the 20th and final circuit, Putnam took the win. Kostreba, VandeKamp, Macko and Erik Gruhlke completed the top five.
Layla Chaplin and Shawn Amundson led the WISSOTA Street Stocks to green, joined by Kyle Howland, who made the battle three wide. Amundson edged out into the spot ahead of a near-three-wide battle among Jimmy Gullikson, Chaplin and Howland. Gullikson moved forward and raced into first before the caution was triggered.
As the green reappeared, Tommy Pogones pressured Gullikson and Pogones had the slight advantage, as another caution was triggered.
Pogones brought the drivers back to green with Howland and Gullikson just behind. With a couple laps to go, Pogones stretched his lead and grabbed the win. Gullikson, Amundson, Howland and Chaplin rounded out the top five.
Jordan Henkemeyer claimed the early lead in the WISSOTA Super Stocks. Chris Wark and Dustin Nelson battled for second, with Dylan Kromschroeder close behind. Wark took the spot and chased after Henkemeyer, while Nelson and Kromschroeder battled for third. Wark tried to make the pass for the lead, but Henkemeyer held the point. Kromschroeder joined in the battle and the top three drivers remained close throughout the final laps. Kromschroeder slid ahead with two laps to go and pulled away to take the win, while Henkemeyer, Wark, Nelson and Jake Luark rounded out the top five.
Brennan Gave took the lead as the green waved for the WISSOTA Modifieds, with Clayton Wagamon in second. The top drivers spaced out around the speedway as laps passed quickly and Gave held command over the field. Just as Wagamon moved in to make a pass, the yellow flag dropped for a driver going over the track’s banking.
The field was reset with Gave feeling the heat from Wagamon and Travis Schulte. Wagamon dropped low on the track to challenge Gave, but Gave’s line was faster as he continued to pull away in the turn’s exit. Gave led from flag to flag and took the win ahead of Wagamon, Schulte, Ryan Gierke and Zach Benson in the top five.
Thomas Burgard and Connor Bruss battled during the opening lap of the WISSOTA Mod Four feature. Burgard claimed the early lead while Dustin Holtquist challenged Bruss for second. Holtquist took second and closed the gap with Burgard as the yellow flag appeared.
Burgard drifted high on the restart, allowing Bruss to shoot into the lead, bringing Holtquist with him. Holtquist raced to Bruss’s door and made the pass for first as drivers settled into positions.
Holtquist led the remaining laps and claimed the win ahead of Bruss, Tyler Larson, Gerry Nohner and Robert Holtquist in the top five.
The UMSS Traditional Sprint Cars were also in attendance and Jack Berger executed a thrilling finish in the feature to get the win.
The Crown Vics closed out the night’s race program, and Marcus Ammerman led from flag to flag as he took his second feature win in a row at Princeton Speedway.
