Kast, Carlson, Tourville, Holtquist, Jensen, Nelson, Thomas & Peterson pull off Fall Classic wins at Ogilvie Raceway

By Tami Jo Kuehn

OGILVIE, MN (October 10) - The 23rd Annual FYE Motorsports Fall Classic kicked off under sunny skies at Ogilvie Raceway Saturday, October 10, feature 85-degree weather and strong winds.

Following the WISSOTA Dirt Track Series action, Fall Classic champions in sanctioned features included Austin Carlson, Keith Tourville, Joey Jensen, Tyler Peterson, Joseph Thomas, Dylan Nelson, Dustin Holtquist, and Christian Kast.

The WISSOTA Pure Stocks went into the night with the national points title a tie between Austin Carlson and Jake Smith. As the green waved, Carlson grabbed the immediate lead with Dylan Helget and Joshua Bitker in tow.

After a caution reset the field, Smith made his way to second and put pressure on Carlson. The top two remained close as they separated from the pack, and with few laps to go, one more caution occurred.

Carlson and Smith remained glued to each other the remainder of the race, and when the checkered flag waved, Carlson took the win and clinched the WISSOTA Pure Stock National Championship. Smith finished second ahead of Tyler Wahlstrom, Kade Leeper and Joshua Bitker in the top five.

Keith Tourville (Michael Wadsen Photo)

Cody Kummer and Braedyn Fleck led the WISSOTA Street Stocks to green for the next feature and Kummer had the early advantage at the end of lap one. Fleck held second as Keith Tourville hugged the tires and made his way past the top two and into the lead. As Kummer drifted up the track, this allowed Fleck by. Eric Riley then worked past Kummer and was door to door for second with Fleck. Out front, Tourville began to stretch his lead.

Through heavy lapped traffic, Tourville stretched his lead to 4.89 seconds across the remainder of the race and claimed the Fall Classic win. Riley, Kummer, Parker Anderson and Braedyn Fleck rounded out the top five.

Joey Jensen (Michael Wadsen Photo)

The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds filled the track with 27 cars in the lineup. Jake Molitor and Jake Hagemann brought the racers to green, before Jason VandeKamp quickly made his way into the top point. A caution occurred with seven laps in the books when Molitor hit a rut and his car jumped out of the lane, collecting Jensen. Jensen was returned to his spot and Molitor was charged with the caution.

Jensen used the restart to gain the top spot when the field was back under green. He had a near 2-second lead with about 10 laps in the books as he worked his way through heavy lapped traffic.

Jensen was slowed by lapped car, and this allowed VandeKamp to close the gap and apply pressure the final turns. Jensen held back his efforts, however, and took the Fall Classic title. VandeKamp finished second ahead of Hagemann, Smith and Shane Sabraski in the top five.

Tyler Peterson (Michael Wadsen Photo)

Matt Gilbertson grabbed the initial lead when the WISSOTA Late Model feature began, before Darrell Nelson moved past him and took the top spot with three laps in the books. The caution fell with five laps completed for a slowing Zach Wohlers.

Nelson remained in command as Kevin Burdick and Gilbertson worked on each other for second. Peterson took fourth, with Massingill in the top five. Another caution fell for a multi-car incident two laps later.

Following the restart, Nelson drove out to the lead once more ahead of Gilbertson and Burdick, as seventh-starter Tyler Peterson split the duo with nine laps completed and took second.

Following a caution with 26 laps left on the board for Skeeter Estey, Peterson, and another for Cole Searing, Peterson used the high side to swing past Nelson and take the lead with about 23 laps left on the board.

A caution for debris brought the field back together for an 11-lap run to the checkered flag, one that was marred with cautions. Each restart, Peterson held off the efforts of Nelson and Burdick to take home the Fall Classic title.

Burdick, Nelson, Dave Mass and Devin Fouquette completed the top five.

Joseph Thomas (Michael Wadsen Photo)

After an opening-lap caution following contact between Tyler Peterson and Ryan Gierke, the WISSOTA Modifieds raced their feature with Joseph Thomas and Travis Schulte in a battle for first. Thomas broke away with a healthy advantage after a few laps, with Schulte in second. Thomas stretched his lead as the laps passed by, but Schulte slowly tightened the gap as Thomas moved through the backmarkers with 15 laps to go.

Schulte moved to Thomas’ side and made the pass with eight to go, using a lapped car to his advantage, but Thomas fought back. Thomas dove low and used a slider in turns three and four to try and regain the lead, but Schulte held the point. Thomas used a slide job again the next time by, and again Schulte kept the lead.

Out front, Schulte held on in the remaining laps for the victory. After the tech shed, Schulte was DQ’d and Thomas was awarded the win.

Bellefeuille, Sabraski, Clayton Wagamon and Landon Atkinson filled out the official top five.

Dylan Nelson (Michael Wadsen Photo)

Joey Jensen claimed the top point with Tim Johnson and Dylan Nelson in tow when the WISSOTA Super Stocks went green. Jensen led the opening laps before Nelson moved in and made the pass for the lead. Johnson followed in the path of Nelson and took second while Jensen remained in third.

Johnson worked every groove to pass Nelson, but Johnson then suffered a mechanical issue and retired to the infield. Jensen assumed second as the laps continued to pass by. The Super Stocks remained caution free as Sabraski worked his way into second and looked ahead at Nelson as the front of the field worked through backmarkers.

Nelson stretched his lead to 4 seconds however, and took Fall Classic title. Sabraski, Jensen, Jordan Henkemeyer and Dexton Koch completed the top five.

Dustin Holtquist (Michael Wadsen Photo)

The WISSOTA Mod Four top drivers were a tight-knit group during the opening lap, before a quick caution triggered a chain effect of cautions that lasted throughout the entire race. Connor Bruss took the lead and led a majority of the race, until Dustin Holtquist made his way through the pack. Holtquist used the cautions to advance from 23rd at the start to third, and then drove into second.

With five laps to go, Dustin Holtquist made the pass on Bruss and held the point to take the eventual win. Bruss finished second with Chad Funt, Tyler Larson and Kyle Thell in the top five.

Christian Kast (Michael Wadsen Photo)

Christian Kast and Adam VanDerostyne battled for the lead during the opening laps of the WISSOTA Hornet championship feature. Kast secured the lead point with VanDerostyne and William Lange in tow. The Hornets cruised their way around the Big O and the top drivers had begun to work through lapped traffic as the race came to a close. Kast came out on top and took home the Fall Classic victory, while Adam VanDerostyne, William Lange, Randy Jacoboski and Adam Throener finished in the top five.

Parker Gilbertson grabbed the immediate lead in the Limited Late Models feature, ahead of Blake Boelens and Cade Skytland in second and third. Without any cautions, Gilbertson eased his No. 23jr to the eventual victory. Boelens, Skytland, Don Shaw and Jeff Nelson were top five finishers.

The Crown Vics closed down the night with Michael Blevins, Sr. claiming the top point when the green waved. Sam Blevins moved into second, while others remained door-to-door for positions in the field.

Sam Blevins made his way forward and with a couple laps to go, he dipped down low alongside his dad Michael. Sam challenged Michael during the final lap, however dad had the upper hand and remained out front to take the Fall Classic victory. Sam Blevins finished second with Calvin Saldana, Mike Layne and Devin Reynolds in the top five.
