Sabraski sprints off the front row to win $3,000 LM main at Proctor, but remainder of Silver 1000 rained out

PROCTOR, MN (September 3) - The Structural Buildings WISSOTA Late Model Challenge Series headed to Proctor Speedway Thursday night, September 3 for the 54th running of the Silver 1000.

Though rain cancelled the WISSOTA Modified portion of the event, the WISSOTA Late Model feature was completed in full and Shane Sabraski scored the victory.

A hefty field of 42 WISSOTA Late Model competitors were on hand and Johnny Broking set fast time, with a lap of 15.081 seconds.

Jake Redetzke and Sabraski earned the front row for the night’s $3,000-to-win, 40-lap feature event. With a mega thunderstorm bearing down on the facility and lightning filling the Twin Ports sky, Sabraski took the early lead from the outside of the front row. Sabraski led lap one by a slight margin ahead of Redetzke, as Dave Mass and Steve Laursen battled side by side for third during the opening circuit. Mass held off Laursen for third early on as well.

As Sabraski set sail out front, the battles throughout the field were amazing: Mass and Redetzke ran side by side for runner-up honors for multiple laps in a row before Jesse Glenz joined the battle for second on lap 18. Glenz slipped to third for a lap and raced in a podium spot for several laps until the event reached the halfway point.

Sabraski continued to lead ahead of Redetzke and Mass, with Johnny Broking moving in on Glenz, bringing Sam Mars along in a thriller of a battle for a top-five spot. Just past the 20-lap mark, Glenz slowed with a mechanical issue, bringing out the first and only caution of the event.

On the restart, Sabraski took back off into the lead with Broking making a move into third and working by Mass into second during the next several laps. Broking appeared to have the fastest car on the track during the final few laps as he tracked down Sabraski out front. The race ran nonstop to the finish and Sabraski raced to the Silver 1000 title by a margin of 0.456 seconds. Broking finished second with Mass third. Kevin Eder rallied from his 17th starting spot to cross the line in fourth, earning Hard Charger honors. Kevin Burdick picked his way forward from 16th to finish fifth.

Redetzke, Mars, Billy Kendall, Laursen and James Giossi held sixth through 10th, as the feature went until Brian Riedemann’s double checkered less than one minute before the skies opened up and drenched the grandstand full of cheering fans.

Burdick extended his series point lead over Sabraski by 25 markers and will continue to carry the leader’s AT21 yellow point leader spoiler into Thursday’s annual WISSOTA Classic at the Grand Rapids Speedway.

Unfortunately, the WISSOTA Modified portion of the Silver 1000 was rained out and the payout was split equally amongst the 25 scheduled feature starters.
