Richards, Fankhauser, McFadden and Adams are best of the night one Dairlyand Dashers at Rice Lake

By Ed Reichert

RICE LAKE, WI (September 5) - Opening night of the Dairyland Dash at Rice Lake Speedway welcomed 158 drivers from throughout the upper Midwest and Canada to race on the opening night.

Racing was held in six WISSOTA-sanctioned divisions during the evening and the winners included George Richards in the Pure Stocks, Sam Fankhauser in the Street Stocks, Shawn McFadden in the Super Stocks and Blake Adams in the Midwest Modifieds and the Modified divisions.

Richards took over late in the WISSOTA Pure Stock feature after Bob Wahlstrom led for much of the race. Wahlstrom got the jump on the opening green flag ahead of Mark Barta and those two raced hard for the lead through the first half of the race. Barta strongly challenged Wahlstrom several times to take over the lead spot, but each time Wahlstrom fought him off.

Their battle got even more intense and it resulted in the two of them colliding in turn three while Barta was trying to sneak under Wahlstrom for the top spot. Both drivers were able to resume racing, but Barta was sent to the tail of the field.

Wahlstrom now had George Richards and Austin Fencl chasing him back under green. Richards moved up the track in an effort to make an outside pass for the lead. James Rahn began to make a move of his own as he got past Fencl to take over third.

Richards made his outside move pay off and he completed his impressive charge by driving around Wahlstrom on lap 10 to take over the lead. After that, in the remaining five laps, he stretched his advantage and drove home for the win. Wahlstrom was second with Rahn, Fencl and C.J. Wagner completing the top five.

Sam Fankhauser (Doug Zimmer Photo)

Fankhauser won the closest feature finish of the night with a very late-race pass on Parker Anderson to top the WISSOTA Street Stock main. Anderson started on the pole and led the opening pair of laps before a yellow for a spinning car stopped the action. Fankhauser then picked up the pace and passed Anderson for the lead, but was only able to hold the point for one lap before Anderson again regained the top spot.

Nick Traynor and Cody Kummer were also pushing the leaders hard at this point. Traynor’s rush on the outside was stymied by Anderson when he moved up the track just in the nick of time.

A second yellow fell at the halfway point of the race when Hunter VanGilder was torn up on the back chute, slowing the action with Anderson still in the lead.

Anderson continued to lead ahead of Fankhauser and Traynor, who battled side by side for second. Finally, Fankhauser gained the position and he then began to move in on Anderson.

As the laps ran down, Anderson seemed to be pushing up the track just a bit as Fankhauser worked to get under him for the lead. It got very close as the laps rolled by and at the white flag, Fankhauser was just barely in the lead. Anderson drove back hard on the final lap and they raced side by side off the final corner.

Fankhauser got the better run to the finish line and nipped Anderson by .095 seconds to take the win. Traynor finished a close third with Cole Richards and Kummer completing the top five.

Shawn McFadden (Doug Zimmer Photo)

McFadden had an impressive run as he led from start to finish to win the WISSOTA Super Stock feature. He started on the outside pole and got the jump on Terran Spacek to take the early lead. Only two laps were completed when the yellow flew for Chris Gross, whose ride rested against the wall on the frontstretch.

However, that was the only slowdown of the 20-lap feature and the 26 starters were soon strewn out all over the track. McFadden continued his blistering pace as he pulled away from Spacek who continued to run second.

There was quite a battle for third as Jesse Redetzke, Joey Jensen, Dan Nissalke, Alex Myers, and Shane Kisling and Tommy Richards all battled for position and traded spots on nearly every lap. By the halfway point, Nissalke had settled in third with Jensen and Richards next in line.

Near the end of the race, McFadden was in some heavy traffic, but he navigated his way through the congestion and didn’t allow Spacek to get too close to him.

McFadden finished off his strong run to claim the $1,500 top prize and Spacek, Nissalke, Richards and Kisling completed the top five.

It was a great night for Adams with double wins, as he claimed both open wheel feature races.

Blake Adams (Brent Creaser Photo)

In the WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature, Brady Larson got the jump to lead the opening lap but one lap later, Adams slid past in turn two and then fought off a return effort by Larson. The lone yellow of this race flew with three laps completed as an infield marker tire was kicked up on the track.

Adams took off on the green, but Larson was right behind him and constantly challenging for the spot. James Vendela had moved into third at this point and fought off Joey Jensen and Mike Schnider as those three raced closely together.

The laps quickly clicked off with Adams continuing to lead and Larson right on his tail. Things got challenging when the leaders hit the back of the pack, but while both had to make some quick decisions on where and when to make moves, the running order stayed the same and the distance between the two didn’t vary much.

Occasionally both leaders changed their lines around the track, looking for an advantage, but as hard as Larson pushed, he couldn’t gain ground on Adams. Adams and Larson continued to ride the cushion and Adams maintained his margin to the checkered flag. Vendela, Jensen and Dave Baxter finished in the top five.

Blake Adams (Brent Creaser Photo)

Adams and Matt Leer started the WISSOTA Modified feature side by side, going for 25 laps and $2,000 to the winner. Adams got the initial jump and edged past Leer on the opening trip around the speedway. Only one lap was completed before Aiden Hoffman spun in turn two and was clipped by Al Uotinen, which ended the night for both drivers.

On the green, it was still Adams up front by a few car lengths with Leer locked in a big battle for second ahead of Shane Halopka, Kennedy Swan and Kaden Blaeser.

As Adams continued to lead by a few car lengths, the war for second was going on right behind him with crowd-pleasing sliders and counter sliders executed as the battle for second heated up.

Adams ran much the same line as he had in the Midwest Modified, high on one end of the track and low on the other, as Blaeser moved into second by the halfway point of the race and put heat on the leader. Swan, Halopka and Leer were all still right there though and when Hunter Anderson rolled to a halt with a flat tire, this set up a five-lap dash to the finish.

Adams got away at the start, but Swan threw a slider and moved into second as both she and Halopka were able to get past Blaeser. Adams maintained a few car length advantage over the pack and drove on for the win. A last-corner move allowed Halopka to take second away from Swan, with Blaeser and Leer following. The two wins allowed Adams to bank $3,000 for the night.

A late race yellow spelled trouble for Jason McFadden, who was leading the USRA Late Model feature with just two laps to go, only to see the yellow bring disaster. Cooper Sundby drove around him on the restart and on to victory.

McFadden had to settle for second with Zack Drews, Larry Fitzsimmons and Caden Steffen-Ludwig rounding out the top five.
