Glenz gets a pair of Punky wins while Richards and Baxter put their names into history books as well at Red Cedar Speedway

MENOMONIE, WI (September 26) - Jesse Glenz delivered for two victories Saturday night on Red Cedar Speedway’s biggest stage, as the No. 7x won the WISSOTA Modified and Late Model headliners at the Menomonie, Wis. oval, as part of the 46th annual Punky Manor Challenge of Champions.

Tommy Richards drove to the win in the WISSOTA Super Stocks, while David Baxter notched the big win in the WISSOTA Midwest Mods. Matt LaDuke scored the USRA Late Model win.

First on track were the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds, led to green by Brady Larson and Nick Koehler. After side-by-side action and a slide job in turn four during the first lap, Larson was scored the leader by slight margins before the caution fell for two racers in the back of the field.

Koehler was the new leader the following lap, as the two fought back and forth for the top spot just ahead of Joey Jensen and David Baxter. Koehler was comfortable on the low side of the track, while Larson worked the high side. Baxter moved into third along the low side, as Jensen fell back some in fourth.

With four laps complete Larson moved to the back bumper of Koehler along the low lane, as Koehler then abandoned the low side for the high line a lap later, preventing Larson’s potential run. Meanwhile, Baxter moved to the inside of Larson along the lane to complete the fifth lap, securing second when Larson got over the cushion in turn four and made contact with the wall down the frontstretch.

After the restart was marred by a multi-car incident that started in the front of the field and caused an accordion effect farther back in the field, Koehler continued to lead, with Baxter and Jensen fighting side by side for second. Baxter took the spot and immediately moved in to pressure Koehler. As the top three moved to the bottom of the track, Koehler seemed to put distance on Baxter before the field was regrouped under yellow with 10 to go for debris.

Back under green Baxter, Koehler and Jensen were making for a thrilling three-way battle for the lead, but an incident farther back in the field kept the pack slowed for another caution with 15 laps in the books and 10 remaining.

Koehler was the leader with the field back under green, but had heavy pressure to his inside from Baxter, who inched his way into the lead with eight laps to go. Koehler remained door to door with Baxter as he worked the middle to upper groove and Baxter remained committed to the low side. Jensen was right on their bumpers and at times, side by side with Koehler in his fight for second. Another caution put an end to the great show up front with just three laps to go.

Koehler moved to the outside of Baxter when the green came back out on the field, and the next lap by Baxter hit a rut and bounced, allowing Koehler the chance to close in once again. Baxter recovered and pulled away during the final lap, to net the Punky title for the Mid Mods. Jensen won the drag race to the line for second, Koehler was third, Shadow Kitchner was fourth and Alex Myers completed the top five.

Eric Olson was the early leader of the WISSOTA Super Stock feature, as Jesse Redetzke used the high side and entered the conversation for the top spot with two laps complete. Tommy Richards moved into third a lap later, while Marcus Simonson was fourth and Avery Anderson was fifth. Redetzke took the lead and built slightly more than a half second cushion ahead of Olson, with Richards right on Olson’s bumper.

With Redetzke up along the high side, Olson and Richards remained nose to tail along the low side. Simonson was fourth and Joey Jensen worked his way into fifth with nine laps complete.

One lap later, traffic was just ahead of Redetzke, but most were on the low side of the track. With 13 to go Richards found a way by Olson and set off after Redetzke who was about 2 seconds ahead in the lead. Cory Mahder cracked the top five and worked to the outside of Simonson as Richards struggled with lapped traffic, allowing Redetzke to grow his advantage to nearly 3 seconds. The caution then fell for Thomas Hauert, who was stopped up by the wall in turn three.

Redetzke led the field back to green, with heavy pressure from Richards. Richards took the lead with seven laps to go, as 15th-starter Shawn McFadden worked his way into third. Olson and Simonson were fourth and fifth. Terran Spacek was also on the move, as he grabbed fourth ahead of Simonson before the yellow flew again for a multi-car incident with five laps to go.

Richards pulled away after the restart, leaving Redetzke to fight with McFadden for second; McFadden took the spot, and was a little less than 1 second behind Richards with three laps to go. Redetzke and Spacek continued to race back and forth for third.

Out front, Richards took the win - his first of the season, and his third Punky Manor title overall - ahead of McFadden, Redetzke, 14th-starter Spacek and 11th-starter Joey Jensen.

Glenz and defending Punky champion A.J. Diemel led the field of WISSOTA Modifieds to the green flag for the 30-lapper, with Diemel holding the early advantage to complete the first lap. Glenz drove by along the low lane and into the lead the next time by, and immediately added to his cushion with five complete. Diemel was second, Adam Hensel was third, Shane Halopka was fourth and Jake Hartung was fifth.

Glenz rolled up on lapped traffic early, losing time with 10 laps complete, but still about 1 second ahead before Diemel had to deal with the same lapped traffic. Glenz continued to work his way through heavy lapped traffic, keeping about a 2 second advantage ahead of Diemel. Jake Smith had worked his way into third, Hensel was fourth and Brady Uotinen was fifth.

The race remained under green for the remainder of the 10 lap run to the checkered flag and Glenz took the victory ahead of Diemel. Smith, who started ninth, finished solidly in third. Hensel and 12th-starter Uotinen rounded out the top five.

Sam Mars and Rick Hanestad led the field of WISSOTA Late Models to the green for their 40-lapper. Mars was the early leader before a caution in turn three for an incident between Kevin Burdick and Diemel brought the field back together for a full restart. Burdick left the track the following restart after hitting a tire in turns one and two.

Mars had a little more than a 1.5-second lead with three laps scored, as Hanestad then had problems and spun down the backstretch.

With the green back out, Glenz slid by Mars to gain the lead with five laps complete, and Mars returned the favor back down the backstretch. Glenz and Mars continued their back-and-forth dance for the top spot, with Glenz secure along the bottom side of the speedway and Mars along the top side.

Mars was scored the leader with nine laps complete, as Glenz moved back by one lap later. Mars lost ground in his efforts to get past a lapped car, and Glenz immediately profited from the turn of events, gaining more than 1.5 seconds ahead of the No. 28.

Cory Crapser had moved into third, Ashley Anderson was fourth and Travis Budisalovich was fifth.

Glenz was on cruise control out front as he worked through lapped traffic. Just past the halfway point, Glenz's advantage was nearly 3 seconds ahead of Mars. Crapser was third, Anderson remained in fourth, and Budisalovich was fifth.

As Glenz had lapped traffic in both lanes ahead, Mars was able to move back in on the No. 7x and chipped away the lead to about a half second. With 11 to go, Mars worked to the inside of Glenz, before Glenz had the decks clear in the upper groove and drove back out to a slight advantage before a caution.

With 31 laps scored, Glenz led the field back to green. Anderson used the high side to drive past Glenz to complete the lap and held a narrow advantage at the line each time by. Crapser was third, Mars slipped back to fourth and Chad Mahder appeared in the top five.

Anderson continued to hold about a half-second lead in the waning laps, with Glenz having a great run down the backstretch with three laps to go. Anderson moved to the bottom in one and two, opening up the top side for Glenz, who had a good run down the backstretch and drove past and back into the lead. Glenz took the checkered flag ahead of Anderson, Mars, 17th-starter Mahder, and Crapser in the top five.

In the USRA Late Models, LaDuke started from the front row and capitalized, taking the win ahead of Parker Gilbertson, Ryan Howe, Steven O’Brien and Clayton Hoeftig in the top five.
