Sabraski scores two more while Fosso finishes sweep at Hibbing and Peterlin posts Labor Day Shootout Late Model win

By Chris Stepan & ATD Staff

HIBBING, MN (August 31) - Hometown racer Kyle Peterlin sped off from the outside of the front row, and withstood an early three-car battle to drive to the Labor Day Shootout victory in front of his hometown crowd Sunday during the final night of action at the Hibbing, MN race track.

Other WISSOTA Dirt Track Series winners included Shane Sabraski, Brady Fosso and Jake Smith.

After heat race action was completed, Sabraski and Peterlin earned the front row for the night’s $3,000-to-win, 40-lap WISSOTA Late Model Challenge Series feature event, with Sabraski the early leader before the race came to a halt for a crash on the opening lap. Keith Niemi suffered damage, but he was able to continue on the ensuing restart.

When the field went back green with zero laps scored, Sabraski took back off into the lead with Peterlin and Jeff Provinzino in close pursuit. During the first five laps of the race, the lead trio traded sliders on each end of the speedway to try to get the upper hand until the second yellow of the race flew on lap six for Derek Vesel, who spun in turn two.

After another quick caution a lap later, the field was reset once again and, on the restart, Sabraski took off out front with Peterlin and Provinzino running in a side-by-side battle for second. Meanwhile, Ryan Mikkelson, Joel Bennett, Jeff Massingill and Adam Ayotte were also wheel to wheel just behind in a battle for fourth.

Peterlin was finally able to secure the top spot on lap eight and looked as if he was going to be able to drive off, but one final caution flew on lap 12 for debris, which kept the field tight once again.

Back under green, Peterlin led at the halfway point ahead of Sabraski, Provinzino, Mikkelson and Massingill, but the track began to tighten around the bottom and Peterlin was able to run in the preferred groove for the final 20 laps en route to the victory.

Provinzino slipped by Sabraski into second on lap 25 while the leaders were in traffic, and the remaining circuits ran without incident to the checkered. Mikkelson and Massingill rounded out the top five finishers when the checkered flag flew.

Sabraski won the WISSOTA Modified feature from his fourth-starting spot, taking the lead around the halfway point of the race and holding on out front ahead of Cole Chernosky and Jody Bellefeuille for the victory. Jeffrey Wood and Deven VanHouse completed the top five.

In the WISSOTA Super Stocks, Sabraski led from flag to flag to net another win on the night, taking the checkered flag by more than 2 seconds ahead of Jordan Henkemeyer. Steve Stuart, Tristan LaBarge and Rick Simpson rounded out the top five.

After a three-car battle up front through lapped traffic in the closing laps of the feature, Smith won the WISSOTA Midwest Modified main event with a bump-and-run move along the inside of David Simpson with one lap to go. Tyler Vernon, Simpson, Michael Blevins, Sr. and Eric Anderson filled out the top five.
