HIBBING, MN (August 30) - Hibbing Speedway played host to the 47th running of the Bill Engelstad Labor Day Shootout, featuring the WISSOTA Late Model Challenge Series as well as action in the Modifieds, Super Stocks, Midwest Mods, and Hornets.

Cameron, Wisconsin’s Kevin Eder raced off from 11th on the starting grid en route to his first Challenge Series victory and his first Labor Day Shootout championship. Other WISSOTA Dirt Track Series winners included Shane Sabraski, Brady Fosso, and Tyler Vernon.

After heat race action was completed, Joel Bennett and Sabraski earned the front row for the night’s $3,000-to-win, 40-lap Late Model feature event, but Bennett did not start due to mechanical issues. After the starting lineup was crisscrossed, Sabraski got the upper hand on the initial start. As the field rumbled down the backstretch on the opening lap, Kevin Burdick slid to the inside of Sabraski for the lead and the two drag raced into the turn, where Sabraski threw a slider on Burdick. As Burdick tried to turn under the Sabraski, his machine got out from under him and he turned himself around, bringing out the first caution of the night.

On the restart, Sabraski continued to lead with Mass and Broking running in a side-by-side battle for second, while Kyle Peterlin and Provinzino were also wheel to wheel just behind in a battle for fourth.

Ryan Mikkelson was turned around during lap five, bringing out the second caution of the race and bunching the field back up once again. When the field went back green, Provinzino took a stab at Sabraski for the lead and the pair raced side by side for several laps until Provinzino took command. At the same time, Kevin Eder, who started 11th, joined the battle for third with Broking and Mass in what was a great race within the race to watch.

Sabraski led at the halfway point ahead of Provinzino, Broking, Eder and Mass, but the final caution flew on lap 24, changing the complexion of the event with just 16 laps remaining.

On the restart, Eder drove on the extreme low line around the speedway and was able to steal second on lap 25, and then charge into the lead on lap 27. Eder raced to his first career Challenge Series victory and first Labor Day Shootout title in the process. Provinzino and Sabraski continued their battle for second over the final circuits, with Provinzino coming out on top in second and Sabraski racing across the finish line in third for the final podium spot. Mass and Kyle Peterlin completed the top five.

Sabraski started the WISSOTA Modified feature from the pole, and immediately engaged in a several-lap side-by-side battle with Deven VanHouse for the lead. Sabraski slipped back as far as third along the low side of the speedway, as Bob Broking drove by into second and then took over the lead from VanHouse.

With about 15 to go, Sabraski jumped to the top of the track and immediately made gains. Following a restart, Sabraski drove past VanHouse and to the inside of leader Bob Broking, using a slider and contact to grab the lead from Broking and garner the eventual win. VanHouse, Broking, Andrew Inman and 24th-starter Jody Bellefeuille were top-five finishers.

In the WISSOTA Super Stocks, Sabraski started third and took the lead from Rick Simpson with about seven laps to go. Simpson kept pace with Sabraski but could not find enough to get back past the No. 7A. Sabraski scored the victory ahead of Simpson, Cole Chernosky, Kyle Copp and Andy LaBarge in the top five.

Tyler Vernon took the lead in the WISSOTA Midwest Mod main event around lap five and secured the win just under 1 second ahead of Mikey Blevins, David Simpson, Michael Blevins, Sr. and Jake Smith in the top five.

Team Canada won the inaugural Engelstad Cup to cap off the night.
