Kaeter, Koch, Flaten, Vogel and Larson lock things up Thursday at KRA season championship night
By Ron Krog
WILLMAR, MN (August 28) - Thursday was season championship night at KRA Speedway. It was a great night of racing, wrapped up with some great weather and a bunch of close battles.
WISSOTA Dirt Track Series winners included Tyler Kaeter, Dexton Koch, Ryan Flaten, Justin Vogel, and Dean Larson.
Vogel, the nine-time track champion and WISSOTA Street Stock point leader heading into the night, started back in the third row while out front, Layla Chaplin took the early lead. For the first couple of laps she looked very good, but a couple of cautions reset the field. Ethan Iiams took over out front, with Joe Martin and Vogel battling for second place. As the race wore on, with about 10 laps to go, Vogel moved into first. Martin took second and Kolton Brauer slipped into third. Vogel hung on for the win followed by Martin, Brauer, Iiams, and Zach Flickinger in the top five.
Vogel picked up his 10th championship and his 199th career win.
The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds were also entertaining. Early on it looked like Jason Vejtruba was set to be crowned with the championship, but things happened in a hurry. Ryan Flaten took the early lead in the race and was strong out front. Brady Larson moved into second before tough luck hit Vejtruba with nine laps to go and sent him to the pits. With Vejtruba sidelined, Flaten had to only stay within the top three for the championship and he got it done, taking the victory and the track championship. Larson, Justin Bjorklund, Jett Lindgren and Jake Wranek were top-five finishers.
In the WISSOTA Mod Fours, Tyler Larson came into the night with a pretty comfortable point lead, but his dad Dean Larson stole the show on this particular night. Dean picked up the win ahead of Tyler in second - Tyler garnered the track championship and Dean picked up his 244th career win. Jamie Flickinger, Chad Funt and Jack Post completed the top five.
In the WISSOTA Super Stocks, Zach Schultz looked like he had things under control for the championship; when the race took off, it was a battle up front between Andrew Hedtke and Schultz as they raced side by side. Through the race, Travis Scott and Dexton Koch moved into contention. Koch raced alongside Schultz for second for about five laps before Koch took the spot. He held on for the victory ahead of Scott, Schultz, Eric Martini and Hedtke. Schultz secured the championship.
The WISSOTA Modifieds were led early on by Tyler Kaeter, who looked strong in the lead. He was chased hard by Brandon Beckendorf, who had dominated in heat race action earlier in the program. Kaeter held back all advances and took the eventual victory, ahead of Beckendorf, Don Eischens, Seth Brede, and Blake Adams in the top five. Eischens was crowned the track champion.
Christian Kast picked up the win and his championship in the Hornets, while Colsten Schultz picked up his 11th Pure Stock win on the racing season, and Mason Fester was crowned track champion.
