Mass, Bitzans, Dykhoff and Miller mow down I-94 rivals under Friday night lights
By Ron Krog
FERGUS FALLS, MN (August 28) - The regular racing season came to an end at I-94 emr Speedway, as 124 cars checked in for championship night, with six champions crowned. They included: Kyle Dykhoff in the WISSOTA Street Stocks; Nate Reinke in the WISSOTA Midwest Mods; Christian Kast in the WISSOTA Hornets; Travis Saurer in the WISSOTA Mod and Late Models; and Trevor Walsh in the Gen X Late Models.
On the track there was plenty of action, with WISSOTA Dirt Track Series winners including Dave Mass, Dustin Bitzan, Taylor Bitzan, Lincoln Miller and Kyle Dykhoff.
Dykhoff was the early leader of the WISSOTA Street Stock feature, as Levi Randt moved past Eric Riley into second. Cole Greseth was fourth and Braedyn Fleck was fifth in the early going. Dykhoff’s lead ahead of Randt with five complete was just shy of 1 second, while Riley worked hard to hold off Greseth.
With eight to go, Randt caught Dykhoff and the chase for the lead was on. A spin brought a halt to action, however, with seven laps left to go. Back under green, Riley drove by Randt into second and was side by side with Dykhoff in turn four, but couldn’t make the pass stick. The following lap Riley used a slider to drive by Dykhoff heading into turn two, but Dykhoff regained the top spot as Randt and Riley battled for second.
Dykhoff pulled away in the closing laps for the victory, as Randt held off Riley for second. Fleck and Greseth were top-five finishers.
Nate Reinke was the early leader in the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds, with Taylor Bitzan and Jake Smith behind in a fight for second. As Smith fell off the pace, Jamie Norman moved up to third, and Aaron Michel was fourth.
With eight laps in the books, Bitzan had begun to pressure Reinke, and they raced side by side in the turns for two laps before Bitzan grabbed the advantage with 10 to go. Norman was third, Michel was fourth, and Kyle Anderson had cracked the top five. Two laps later the caution fell for a large wreck.
Bitzan led the field back to green, with Reinke holding second. Anderson moved to third, and Norman was fourth with pressure from Landyn Randt. Randt made his way by Norman for fourth, but as they crossed the start-finish line, the caution fell, negating the move.
Back under green Bitzan took off out front, as Randt motored into second. Reinke was shuffled back to third, Reise Stenberg raced into fourth, and Anderson slipped back to fifth.
With five to go Randt was using the high side to try to close the gap to Bitzan; with two to go, he had a large head of steam but couldn’t capitalize. He tried again on the final lap but came up just short at the line. Bitzan took the win ahead of Randt, Reinke, Anderson, and Stenberg in the top five.
Jack Koranda was the early leader in the WISSOTA Late Models, with Cole Schill and Dave Mass behind him. Mass moved into second with two laps scored, and grabbed the lead two laps later. The battle for third behind Koranda was a good one between Schill and Travis Saurer.
With seven laps completed Saurer finally got by Schill to take over third, and then pressured Koranda for second. With seven laps to go Saurer made the pass into second, but was unable to run down the very fast Mass for the win. Koranda, Schill and Danny Vang rounded out the top five.
Early in the WISSOTA Modified race, Brady Gerdes and Bryce Borgen kept fans entertained with sliders for the top spot. Dusty Bitzan was third, and Travis Saurer joined the party in fourth. Gerdes held the lead, and with 12 laps to go, Dustin Bitzan, who had moved to second, powered to the outside of Gerdes in the battle for the top spot. Saurer was third.
With five laps to go, Bitzan overtook Gerdes for the lead, and from there he held on to pick up the win, followed by Saurer in second. Gerdes, Brendan Blascyk and Joe Thomas rounded out the top five.
It was a family affair in the WISSOTA Hornets, as Lincoln Miller held off his dad Aaron the entire race for the victory. Lucas Hinrichs, Jeff Hinrichs and Cameryn Taylor were top-five finishers.
Ryan Roeder went for a wild ride in the Hornets, but was okay.
Parker Gilbertson topped the Gen X Late Model feature.
