Superior fair races continue and Wednesday winners are Vendela, Jensen, Treviranus and Jacoboski

SUPERIOR, WI (July 30) - The second night of the Head of the Lakes Fair’s racing action at Gondik Law Speedway on Wednesday included three dominating performances and one nail-biter that went down to the wire.

WISSOTA Dirt Track Series winners included Randy Jacoboski, Joey Jensen, James Vendela and Tom Treviranus.

The wild finish came in the 12-lap WISSOTA Hornet finale, where the victory was not decided until the very last few feet for the second straight night. Anthony Jenson came from outside of the second row to sweep around Nathan Penney and Brett Leino for the initial lead, with Carson Gotelaere joining Jenson and Leino in the top three by the end of lap one. Leino faded back after a couple of laps, giving up third to Jacoboski, fourth to Nikota Larson, and fifth to William Lange within a couple of short laps.

On lap four Gotelaere bypassed Jenson to take the lead, with Jacoboski following suit into second. The lead pair moved away temporarily before Larson reeled them in to provide a thrilling three-car race for the win over the final six laps.

With two to go Gotelaere slid up the banking off turn two and scuffed the backstretch wall, opening the door for Jacoboski to take the lead and allowing Larson to close the gap even more. The trio ran in very close formation - Jacoboski ahead, with Larson on his rear bumper, and Gotelaere between them to the inside - until the final corner, when Gotelaere attempted to slide Jacoboski. He could not make the pass stick and Jacoboski dove low to retake the lead coming out of the final turn for the landmark win, his first ever at the speedway.

For the second straight night Gotelaere was less than half a car-length behind in second, while Larson was still on Jacoboski’s tailpipe for third. Jenson and Lange were a distance back to complete the top five.

Joey Jensen (Tom Krob Photo)

Joey Jensen took the lead after an early caution flag and never looked back in capturing his second WISSOTA Super Stock main event of this season here.

Polesitter Kyle Copp led Scott Lawrence away from a four-wide fan out of early contenders for third coming out of the first turn. Jensen, who started fourth, weaved his way between Dan Peterson and Matt Deragon to secure third on lap two, and on the next circuit he dove low to pass Lawrence for second, but the move was nixed by Trenton Bond’s spin.

Within a lap after the restart Jensen duplicated his move past Lawrence for second and began hounding Copp, while Deragon overtook division point leader Andy Grymala for fourth. On lap six Jensen worked the low lane again - this time to catch and pass Copp for the lead, just as Lawrence’s car slowed and dropped out. Tom Hauert also began a drive forward at this point, moving by Grymala for fourth.

Jensen pushed his lead to two full seconds by the 20-lap race’s midpoint, while positions were shuffled behind him. Deragon and Copp waged an intense battle for second before Deragon claimed that spot on lap 13, and after two more tours Hauert took third away from Copp. Grymala also got by Copp for fourth with five laps left.

Jensen went unchallenged the rest of the way for the win, a full 3.6 seconds ahead of Deragon, with Hauert, Grymala and Copp completing the top five.

James Vendela (Tom Krob Photo)

James Vendela ran off with the WISSOTA Midwest Modified 20-lap feature, an event during which only half of the 12-car starting grid finished the event.

Vendela started from the pole and, along with Jimmy Latvala, was safely ahead of a lap two crash that involved at least five cars running mid-pack, eliminating four of them from the race. From that point on the event sped along without further delay, and while contenders like Adam Shinn (while running second) and Ross Siiter dropped out before the race reached its midpoint, Vendela sped away without challenge, building his margin out to two seconds before lap 10.

Vendela’s final winning margin was 3.33 seconds. Paul Ripley, who restarted eighth after the lap one mess, picked his way quickly through the field and moved into second on lap four, where he stayed throughout the duration of the run. Ryan Savoy got past Latvala for third on lap six and stayed there, as did Latvala in fourth.

The only real conflict over the final 11 laps was for fifth, where McLean Andrews and Cory Jorgensen exchanged the position several times before Andrews won the debate with four laps remaining.

Tom Treviranus (Tom Krob Photo)

One night after failing to even start the WISSOTA Pure Stock feature here, Tom Treviranus led every one of the division’s 12 laps in Wednesday’s feature for his second win of the season.

Treviranus beat his son, polesitter Trevor, out of the first set of turns and was not bettered from there. A lap-two tangle among three cars forced the only yellow-flag slowdown of the event, after which Tom pulled away from divisional points leader Eric Crosby and the rest, extending his lead to over two seconds before taking the checkered flag.

Crosby was safely ahead of Shane Basina, who survived a four-car scramble for third position which took place throughout much of the race’s middle stages, while Rob Christman was not far behind Basina in fourth and was well ahead of Trevor Treviranus in fifth.
