Stearns, Tofte, Nelson, Jans & Tirrel make some serious Madison money on Saturday

MADISON, MN (Aug. 1) - The night was a special one in multiple ways at Madison Speedway Saturday. With extra money on the line in the Pure Stocks, WISSOTA Hornets and the DRC WISSOTA Street Stock Tour, as well as the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds, Supers Stocks and Modifieds on hand, the pits swelled to 110 cars checked in for action.

Scott Tofte, Mike Jans, Trevor Nelson, Dylan Tirrel and Mike Stearns were all victorious in their respective WISSOTA Dirt Track Series classes.

The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds kicked off the WISSOTA action with 18 drivers on hand. Tyler Weinmann and Taylor Willms fired from the front row, with Willms grabbing the lead on the opening lap. The first caution of the event struck on lap two.

Back under green Weinmann battled inside to take the lead. As Weinmann led, Ryan Flaten fought for second with Willms. The two drivers were side by side for multiple laps until Willms fended Flaten off.

With 11 to go, Willms caught Weinmann and that fight continued side by side for the lead. Willms regained the top spot and brought Scott Tofte with him.

The lead duo entered lapped traffic with eight laps to go, which allowed Tofte to close in more on Willms. As Tofte made a move for the lead, caution struck with six laps left.

The final restart was a dandy, as Tofte rolled the bottom and Willms tip-toed around the top. The two ran side by side for two laps until Tofte slid Willms coming to four to go. After taking the lead, Tofte set the car in cruise control to score the victory. Willms, Jake Wranek, Justin Bjorklund and Flaten rounded out the top five.

Next up was the DRC WISSOTA Street Stock Tour with 27 drivers in attendance and all drivers qualified for the main event. Joe Arndt and Kyle Dykhoff led the field to green and it was a melee at the start of the race in turn two, as fourth-place starter Tommy Pogones looped it, collecting multiple cars.

As the field was reracked for the restart, Dykhoff took the early lead. As the field went into turn two again, Cody Kummer looked to Dykhoff’s inside but washed up the track and spun Dykhoff, causing another pileup. Luckily all but one were able to continue.

Dykhoff led the ensuing restart, with a raging war behind racing three-wide. Mike Jans broke free from the pack to challenge Dykhoff and Jans took the lead with 21 to go.

Jans began to open a lead while Dykhoff battled with Jeff Ekdahl for second. Dykhoff fended off Ekdahl and reeled in Jans, while Ekdahl kept close and brought Alex Grinager along with him.

With 12 to go, Dykhoff caught Jans and began peeking to the inside of the No. 25 machine. Jans used the preferred middle line to fend off Dykhoff, as Dykhoff then broke with 10 to go.

The caution struck with only seven to go, erasing Jans’s straightaway lead at the time.

Following the restart, Kummer charged from the back up to the race for second. Jans slowly opened a gap, as Kummer gained second with three to go and set his sights on Jans.

Jans checked out in the final laps to score his second Street Stock tour win while Kummer, Justin Vogel, Ekdahl and Grinager rounded out the top five.

The WISSOTA Super Stocks came out next with 13 drivers setting the field. Brayden Hedtke and Josh Roggatz brought the field to green, with Roggatz grabbing the lead on lap two.

As the front row battled, Trevor Nelson got to third and began to reel in the lead duo. On lap six, Nelson took second from Hedtke and sped off after Roggatz. It did not take long and soon Nelson was peeking to Roggatz’s inside with only nine to go.

For three laps the war for the lead was side by side until Nelson threw a slider in turn three to take the spot with six to go. Nelson immediately checked out from the field as he coasted through lapped traffic the final two laps and scored the win.

The WISSOTA Hornets rolled out with 29 drivers on hand, looking for a $567 payday. Adam VanDerostyne and Brandon Louwagie brought the field to green; Louwagie led early. It was a four-car breakaway early as multiple cars off pace caused the leaders to all stay high.

The first caution struck with 15 to go, and on the restart a pileup occurred on the backstretch. After a lengthy delay for wreck cleanup and waiting on an ambulance to arrive at the track, the field was reracked still with 15 to go.

When the green waved again, the top three of Louwagie, Dylan Tirrel and VanDerostyne pulled away from the rest of the field. Tirrel threw a slider at Louwagie in turn three with five to go to take the lead.

Tirrel and Louwagie began pulling away from VanDerostyne. As the top two opened a straightaway lead and lapped traffic became a factor, caution struck with two to go.

During the final two-lap shootout, Tirrel fended off Louwagie to score the win. In post race tech Louwagie was disqualified, which gave second to VanDerostyne, while Chase Golliet, Bradley Rossow and Paxton Tjaden rounded out the top five.

The WISSOTA Modifieds rounded out the night with nine drivers in attendance, led to green by Nate Heinrich and Mike Stearns. Heinrich was the early leader.

Stearns fought back on the inside for a few laps, but Heinrich fended him off. The field quickly spaced out and dwindled quickly, as by lap five only five cars remained on track.

With 10 to go, Stearns reeled in Heinrich again and took the lead this time. Stearns grabbed the lead and never looked back, dominating the final laps as Heinrich, Andy Brooker and Terry Bendel were the lone finishers for the Modified portion of the program. The win was Stearns’s eighth WISSOTA Modified win in a row.

The Madison Pure Stocks kicked off action earlier in the night with 15 drivers vying for a $1,067 payday. Ian Tjaden started second and led all 20 laps in dominating fashion.
