After two weeks off, Brown County roars back to life and winners are Searing, Arment, Nelson, Zabel & Bertram

ABERDEEN, SD (August 21) - After the annual two week hiatus for the Brown County Fair, it was back to racing action at Brown County Speedway in Aberdeen, SD. There were 89 drivers checked in for the action and WISSOTA Dirt Track Series winners included Dawson Zabel, Kyle Bertram, Kent Arment, Trevor Nelson and Cole Searing.

The first feature event was the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds makeup from July 24. There were 21 drivers scheduled to be in the race, but only 16 drivers returned for the event.

Todd Stark and Jace Baloun led the field to green and Stark grabbed the early lead. The caution flag struck on lap two, regrouping the field.

Following the restart, Dawson Zabel and Stark raced side by side for consecutive laps until Stark regained control. Zabel threw a haymaker slider with 11 to go in turn four, but couldn’t make it stick as Stark crossed him over.

Zabel moved to the bottom and took the lead from Stark with nine to go. As Zabel slowly opened a gap, Stark was in a heated battle from second to sixth with Jayme Peterson, Taylor Schmidt, Nick Perry, Ryan Ost and Jake Wranek all over one another. Zabel caught lapped traffic with four to go, but caution struck as he did.

On the restart, Zabel opened a lead once again as Stark, Ost and Schmidt battled for second. Zabel ran away to score his fifth win of the year at BCS. Stark, Schmidt, Ost, and Scott Hansen were top-five finishers.

The WISSOTA Street Stocks came to the raceway with 17 drivers on hand. Kyle Bertram and Chris Serr sat on the front row and Bertram gained early control.

The No. 19X was immediately under fire from the father-son duo of Jayden and Micheal Bogh. As they battled Jodie Michaelsohn closed in, bringing Billie Christ with him. Bertram began to open a gap, but the battle for second was a slide fest between the Boghs, Michaelsohn and Christ.

Jayden got free of the battle and set his eyes on Bertram for the final laps. Jayden was right to the bumper of Bertram with two to go. As they went into turn three, Jayden went for a slider, but clipped the barrel in the turn and violently rolled. Jayden was okay and walked away under his own power. The race was called official under red and checkered, which awarded Bertram the win. It was his first ever at BCS. Michael Bogh was second, Michaelsohn was third, Christ was fourth and Serr completed the top five.

The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds had 22 drivers on hand for their regularly scheduled feature. Zabel and Eric Cease led the field to green, with Zabel having the early advantage.

The caution struck with 13 to go, and on the restart Zabel ripped the top as the field raced two and three wide around the track. Zabel opened up a straightaway lead on the field.

As Zabel checked out it was a battle among Eric Cease, Nick Perry and Jake Wranek for second. As those three drivers swapped spots for multiple laps, Zabel’s lead grew until yellow struck with five to go.

On the restart, Zabel rolled the top as Wranek battled on the inside. Zabel fended off Wranek and took his second victory of the night.

In victory lane Zabel remarked, “Track may have been [a] little rough but for me to be drinking beers at this spot a week ago [to now be racing], shoutout to the track prep crew for getting the track together.”

Wranek, Taylor Schmidt, Perry and Ryan Ost filled out the top five.

WISSOTA Modifieds rolled out with 11 drivers set to battle. Jesse Young and Kent Arment held the front row for the start, with Arment grabbing the lead on the opening lap. The field was frozen as Andy Brooker rolled several times off the top of turn three on the second lap; Brooker was okay and walked away under his own power.

On the restart, Arment checked out on the field, while Tony Konold and Mike Stearns battled side by side for multiple laps; Stearns took the spot with 10 to go. By the time Stearns gained the spot, Arment had opened a half a lap lead.

Arment caught lapped traffic with eight to go, which allowed Stearns to slowly close in. The lead was too much, however, and Arment held on to win. The win was his third of the year in the WISSOTA Modifieds. Stearns, Konold, Denver Nickeson and Jesse Young completed the top five.

WISSOTA Super Stocks hit the track next with 16 drivers on hand for action. Mark Abeln and Trevor Nelson sat on the front row with Nelson grabbing the lead. Bryson North followed through and took second.

Austin Arbogast was an early mover, as he went from ninth to third in the opening five laps. Arbogast rolled the bottom and looked to take second from North until a caution struck with 13 to go.

On the restart, Nelson and North checked out on the field as they both rolled the bottom. North kept pace with Nelson until they caught lapped traffic with three laps to go. Nelson maneuvered traffic with ease and went on to score his eighth win at BCS and 17th overall on the season. North, Mike Rohwedder, Arbogast and Kyle Elsen rounded out the top five.

The final feature of the night, for the 12-count WISSOTA Late Models, was led to green by Cole Searing and Konner Sperle. Searing grabbed the advantage on the opening lap while Chase Gelling took over second.

Searing used the bottom and opened up a gap to Gelling. The pace put Searing in lapped traffic with 18 to go; the traffic picked up two laps later and Searing struggled to get by. While he fought to find a way through lapped traffic, Gelling and Josh Skorczewski began to reel in the No. 10 machine.

However, caution struck with 10 to go, which gave Searing breathing room out front. On the restart, Skorczewski rolled the middle and took over second. Searing was way too good on the bottom, however, and hit his marks to open an advantage back over the field.

With two to go, caution struck again, setting up a green, white, checkered shootout. When they took the green Skorczewski looked to Searing’s outside, but the No. 10 machine was just too hooked up on the bottom. Searing coasted to his third feature win of the season at BCS. Skorczewski, Gelling, Kent Arment and Chad Becker rounded out the top five.

The INEX Legends were in attendance as well. There were 11 drivers checked and it was a good race among Dusty Mund, Bo Gregor and Rayson Sheehan. After 15 laps, Mund grabbed his fifth win at BCS in 2026.
