Young guns Carlson, Beaulieu, Dudley, Schwinn, Labelle and Kessler claim Sunday night scores at Bemidji
By Dennis Peterson
BEMIDJI, MN (August 16) - With the season points battle heating up and only a few nights of regular season race nights left, the drivers and crews were anxious to try to build on their point totals. It was Aircorp Aviation “Young Guns Night.” Twenty-one drivers under 21 were introduced to an appreciative crowd at intermission.
WISSOTA Dirt Track Series winners included Dalton Carlson, Josh Beaulieu, Chris Dudley, Ashton Schwinn, Cameron Labelle, and Adam Kessler.
The first feature race of the night was for the WISSOTA Street Stocks, led to green by Deryk Weleski and Chris Dudley. Dudley blasted to the lead with Weleski second and Weston Ramsrud charging from the back of the pack into third. In a flag-to-flag race, Dudley completed the clean sweep of the Street Stocks and picked up his second victory of the summer.
Cameron Labelle (Lisa Rhen Photo)
The WISSOTA Pure Stocks original lineup featured Caylyn Binkley and Austin Carlson in the front row, but the first lap was halted with the crash of Binkley and Carlson on the front straight. Binkley was sent tailback and Carlson had to pit for repairs, returning to the back of the pack.
With the new front row of Cameron Labelle and Landon Weeks, Pure Stock newcomer LaBelle gained the lead ahead of Jake Smith. Weeks then drove into the infield with mechanical issues. Kade Leeper was on the charge from his fourth-row starting spot into third, with Mason Smith on his bumper. Leeper moved up high on the track and passed Jake Smith for second. LaBelle held his line and picked up his first feature win of the summer in the Pure Stock ahead of Leeper and Jake Smith on the podium.
Josh Beaulieu (Lisa Rhen Photo)
Hunter Weeks and Josh Beaulieu led the pack of WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds to the green flag waving by flagman Lynn Johnson. Weeks and Carter Matthews were locked in a tie for the season points championship prior to this race. Weeks grabbed the early lead with Beaulieu and Skyler Smith in the top three. Matthews moved to the front and raced side by side with Smith for third.
Following a caution for a spin, Weeks held his lead with Beaulieu and Smith still in the top three, while Brennan Schmidt charged forward now in front of Matthews. Beaulieu challenged Weeks to his inside in turns one and two, but Weeks held off the challenge. Again and again Beaulieu raced alongside Weeks, and then down the front straight Beaulieu caught and passed Weeks for the lead.
With that opening, Smith also raced past Weeks to take second behind Beaulieu. In an excellent race, Beaulieu took the checkered flag ahead of Smith and Weeks in the top three. It was Beaulieu’s first win of the summer at Bemidji.
Adam Kessler (Lisa Rhen Photo)
Colten Lodermeier and Adam Kessler led the pack of WISSOTA Hornets down the front straight to the green flag and Kessler took the lead into turn one; Lodermeier and Chad Reller were close behind him. Kessler was flying on the track and quickly built a sizable lead over his competitors. William Lange moved up to pass Reller for third. In a flag-to-flag race, Kessler completed the clean sweep of his races for his first win of the summer. Lodermeier and Lange held the second and third spots.
Brooke Erickson and Ashton Schwinn, first and second in track points at Bemidji Speedway, held row one for the WISSOTA Mod Four feature. Schwinn grabbed control early with Erickson and Dexyn Habraken in second and third. The top three pulled away from the field before the caution slowed the action and brought the field back together for a restart.
Once again Schwinn gained the advantage, with Erickson battling with Habraken for second. Door to door the two raced with excellent control side by side; Habraken finally made the pass for second behind Schwinn. Schwinn picked up seventh feature win and added to his season leading point total with the clean sweep. Habraken and Erickson were second and third.

In the WISSOTA Super Stocks. Alexa Gross and Brandon Bahr were in row one for the start and the two battled for the lead into turn one; both slid sideways bringing out the yellow flag and sending both tailback for the restart. Cameron LaBelle and Matt Sparby inherited the front row for the restart, and LaBelle had the advantage into turn one with Sparby in the lead out of turn two. Coming out of turns three and four it was a three-wide battle among LaBelle, Sparby and Dalton Carlson. The yellow flag waved again for a multi-car spin out in turn four. Sparby and LaBelle both were sent tailback.
Carlson gained the front position with Alan Cleveland and Nic Lewis in the top three for the restart. Another caution, this time for debris, brought the field back together for a restart with Carlson in the lead and Lewis and Brandon Bahr charging from tailback all the way into the top three. Bahr and Labelle dueled for second, with Bahr taking the back-up spot behind Carlson, who picked up his fifth win of the summer at Bemidji. Bahr ran a fantastic race in second, with Labelle third.
In the Bemidji Mini Stocks, Nick McCann topped the feature ahead of Conrad and Cameron Schwinn.
