Burdick battles to Late Model win and Sabraski sprints to two feature wins at Grand Rapids Speedway

GRAND RAPIDS, MN (August 6) - Shane Sabraski scored twice Thursday (in the Modifieds and Super Stocks), while Kevin Burdick won a dynamite Late Model feature and Michael Blevins, Sr. held off national front-runner Blake Adams for victory in the Midwest Mods to highlight WISSOTA Dirt Track Series action at Grand Rapids Speedway.

Jake Smith and Brady Fosso also returned to victory lane in the Pure Stocks and Hornets, respectively, as the Grand Rapids-area track celebrated another night of “Thunder in the Pines.”

Blevins was the early leader in the WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature, with a side-by-side battle for second between Adams and Scott Thompson just behind. Adams worked his way past Thompson with a few laps in the books.

Following a few cautions, the battle for the lead became a three-way fight, as Adams and 11th-starter Skyler Smith were right on his bumper. Adams was finally able to shake off Smith and continued to move in on Blevins in the lead.

With laps waning, Blevins appeared to jump the cushion and Adams shot past - only for the caution to fall due to a spun car in turn four.

Back under green Smith drove by Adams into second, only for Adams to return the favor two turns later. Blevins hit his marks in the final two laps and made his way to the winner’s circle ahead of Adams, Smith, 18th-starter Caley Emerson, and 10th-starter Josh Beaulieu in the top five.

Dylan Nelson was the early leader in the WISSOTA Super Stocks, before Sabraski used the low side of the track to drive by Nelson at the halfway point of the race. He continued to hold sway over the field in the remaining laps as he worked through lapped traffic and took the feature win by just shy of 2 seconds ahead of Nelson. Dustin Nelson, Dalton Carlson and Doug Koski completed the top five.

Harry Hanson led early on in the WISSOTA Late Model feature, with Jeff Provinzino and Kevin Burdick nipping at his heels. Provinzino ran the low side, while Burdick’s route was along the top side. As Hanson pulled away slightly, Burdick pulled to Provinzino’s inside, with the duo fighting back and forth in second and third while they tried to get by Hanson in first. A caution for Mark Heinle allowed the field to catch their breath.

Back under green, Johnny Broking entered the picture in the war for the lead spot, as he pushed Provinzino high and off the track along the high side. No one was sent to the back, and the field was instead reset with Hanson in the lead ahead of Burdick, Broking, Provinzino and Cade Nelson in the top five.

Following the restart, Burdick dove into turn one, slid up in front of Hanson and contact was made, allowing Broking to scoot past the two into the lead.

Burdick and Broking then set off to settle it themselves, trading sliders lap after lap in the remaining 10 laps. Behind them Hanson and Provizino did the same for third.

Once the field settled down a bit, Burdick took advantage of a Broking bobble on the high side in turn one to take the lead, but Broking took it back a turn later.

Burdick used the high side the following lap to gain the lead for good, with Hanson rolling under Broking for second; Broking held the spot.

Burdick drove to the checkered flag in an absolute thriller, with Broking, Hanson, Nelson and Sabraski in the top five.

Lance Schilling was the initial leader in the WISSOTA Modified feature, before multi-time WISSOTA National Champion Sabraski did what he does best - move to the lead and stay there. There was no catching the No. 7A, as he dominated the feature for the victory ahead of Bob Broking, Mervin Castle III, Jeffrey Wood, and Schilling in the top five.

Folstad held the lead early on in the WISSOTA Hornet feature, ahead of Ryker Larson and Brady Fosso in the top three. At the halfway point of the feature, Fosso continued to work to the inside of Larson, with Nick Ruzich right on his bumper. Fosso then jumped to the high side, slipped past Larson and set off after Folstad. A couple of laps later, with two to go, Fosso used the same move to drive by Folstad and into the lead. He raced home to the checkered flag ahead of Folstad, Larson, Ruzich and Astion Schelde in the top five.

Smith led from the pole early on in the WISSOTA Pure Stock feature. It was nearly three wide going into turn four for second among Dylan Elhardt, Austin Carlson, and Alex Berg; a case of bumper cars ahead of him ended with Alex Berg spun in the turn and Berg went to the back for the restart.

Smith grabbed the lead once again on the restart, with Carlson sliding into second, and Elhardt third.

The top three were evenly spaced out around the track, before Elhardt appeared to find something and closed back in to Carlson’s bumper; Elhardt used a last-lap burst to get by Carlson on the high side and took second at the line behind winner Jake Smith. Mason Smith and Bob Klein completed the top five.
