Gondik Law’s holiday weekend cut short, but Nelson, Bellefeuille, Sabraski, Smith & Fencl find victory lane
SUPERIOR, WI (July 4) - The 10th annual Border Battle, which included a visit from the Structural Buildings WISSOTA Challenge Series, was cut short by a day for the 2026 installment, with weather affecting Friday night’s show. Saturday’s ran as scheduled, and WISSOTA Dirt Track Series winners included Jody Bellefeuille, Darrell Nelson, Shane Sabraski, Jake Smith and Austin Fecl.
In the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds, Jake Smith was the early leader, as Jake Hagemann fell into the clutches of Garrett Paull and David Simpson, and then Joey Jensen and Jason VandeKamp as he fell back through the field. Simpson drove by Paull into second before a caution fell for a spun racer.
Back under green, Smith continued to lead ahead of Simpson, who was now under heavy pressure from Jensen. Paull was fourth and VandeKamp was fifth. Jensen took second by a nose the next time by, and they continued to trade the position back and forth with VandeKamp just behind them.
With five laps to go, Smith’s advantage was nearly 3 seconds ahead of Simpson, who now held second. Jensen, VandeKamp and Paull held positions in the top five. A caution for Paul Ripley on the final tour of the speedway regrouped the field.
Back under green, Smith won the one-lap shootout to the finish, with Jensen displacing Simpson to third. VandeKamp was fourth and Paull was fifth.
Shane Sabraski (Tim Hunt Photo)
Koch was the early leader of the WISSOTA Super Stock feature, before Sabraski moved to the bottom and used it to get by Koch. Austin Niemeyer was third, D.J. Keeler was fourth and Jordan Henkemeyer was fifth before a caution for a multi-car wreck.
After a lengthy cleanup process, and a yellow on the initial attempt at the restart, Koch used a slider to get into the top spot, but Sabraski crossed him back over and regained the lead. Keeler, Niemeyer and Henkemeyer held the remainder of the top-five spots with 15 to go.
Sabraski and Koch pulled away from the fight for third, among Niemeyer, Henkemeyer, and now Dylan Nelson, who drove by Keeler to fifth. Henkemeyer then took third from Niemeyer.
With eight to go, Leslie Leu was spun to a stop and the field regrouped under yellow.
The chase was on after the yellow, as Sabraski had Koch right on his tail and Henkemeyer lurking in third. Nelson advanced into fourth ahead of Andy Grymala.
A late caution did not stop Sabraski, as he took the checkered flag. Koch, Nelson, Henkemeyer and Rick Simpson completed the top five.
Darrell Nelson (Tim Hunt Photo)
The Structural Buildings WISSOTA Late Model Challenge Series was next on track, led by polesitter Kevin Burdick. Nelson worked to his outside, with Travis Budisalovich close in third and Dave Mass in fourth. Dave Flynn was farther back from the top four in fifth.
As Burdick remained glued to the bottom, Nelson’s top side efforts paid off as he got past Burdick into the lead. Budisalovich was third, with Mass and Flynn fourth and fifth as Nelson began to work through backmarkers. Flynn fell into the clutches of Pat Doar and Tyler Peterson, displacing him to seventh.
Out front Nelson was hampered by lapped traffic, slowing his efforts and bringing Burdick to his rear bumper. Nelson was finally able to split Ryan Mikkelson and Steve Laursen, and Burdick did the same shortly after. Budisalovich remained in third, with Doar advancing into fourth and Mass in fifth.
Nelson added to his advantage before a caution fell for a slowed Adam Ayotte with 14 to go.
With the green back out, Nelson escaped to slightly more than a 1 second lead ahead of Burdick and Budisalovich. Doar was fourth, and Mass was fifth with Peterson close in sixth.
With eight to go the fight for second turned up the wick, as Budisalovich worked past Burdick into second. A yellow with seven laps to go for a stopped Aaron Lillo regrouped the field.
Back under green, Nelson had the lead out front once more, as Burdick used the opportunity to shoot past Budisalovich into second. Doar was fourth, ahead of Peterson. Nelson drove the remaining laps to the checkered flag, ahead of Burdick, Budisalovich, Doar and Peterson in the top five.
Jody Bellefeuille (Tim Hunt Photo)
The WISSOTA Modifieds were led early on by Darrell Nelson, who came under fire from Bellefeuille, who jetted past and into the top spot during lap one. Cole Boston was third, Brandon Copp fourth and Dave Cain fifth with three laps in the books.
Bellefeuille added to his advantage out front as it was a cluster for second among Nelson, Copp and Boston. Cain drove by Boston into fourth with seven laps completed.
Toward the midpoint of the race, Nelson began to really feel the heat from Copp for second. Bellefeuille began to work his way through the back of the field with 15 to go, and Nelson was able to put distance on Copp and cut into Bellefeuille’s lead. A caution fell for Shane Sabraski, who had damage, in turn four.
With the green back out, Copp drove by Nelson into second behind Bellefeuille. Boston was fourth, with Mike Anderson close behind in fifth with just seven to go. Anderson displaced Boston for fourth, and Ryan Gierke, who started 17th, appeared in the top five. Nelson then hit the wall and Anderson got past to third, with Gierke moving into fourth ahead of Nelson.
Bellefeuille continued on to the checkered flag unchallenged in the remaining laps, taking the victory ahead of Copp, Anderson, Gierke and Boston in the top five.
Austin Fencl (Tim Hunt Photo)
The WISSOTA Pure Stocks were led early on by Tom Treviranus, as the field was three wide for second among Tim Carlson, Rob Christman and Austin Fencl. Fencl took second, Christman settled into third, Dylan Helget advanced to fourth and Carlson was fifth.
Around the midpoint of the race, Fencl drove by Treviranus into the lead, with Christman third and making the pass on Treviranus for second after several laps of side-by-side racing with just two to go.
Out front, Fencl had a healthy advantage at the checkered flag, ahead of Christman, 12th-starter Helget, Treviranus and Bob Klein in the top five.
