Peterson, Berg & Greseth grab Friday wins at River Cities heading into the holiday weekend

By Steven Young

GRAND FORKS, ND (July 2) - River Cities Speedway kicked off July with a Thursday night special leading into America’s 250th birthday. Cole Greseth and Tyler Peterson remained dominant in the WISSOTA Street Stock and Late Model divisions, while Jory Berg made his first appearance in victory lane in 2026 in the WISSOTA Midwest Mod division.

Cole Schill and Brad Seng paced the field at the beginning of the 20-lap Late Model feature. Seng led the opening lap ahead of Schill and Dustin Strand, as the latter moved around the high side of Schill on the fourth lap to take second. Strand began to hunt down Seng for the lead as the lead pair split a lapped car going into turn one on lap six.

Seng and Strand made a little contact at the top of turn two after lapping the slower vehicle, which allowed Schill to close back in, making it a three-car race at the top of the order. Just before the first caution on lap eight, sixth-starter Tyler Peterson made his first appearance in the now four-car battle for the lead.

Strand ducked to the inside of Seng coming off of turn four in a bid for the lead at the end of the ninth lap, but the battle at the top of the field allowed Peterson, who was now running third, to close and make it a three-car battle for the lead.

Peterson executed a slide job for second in turn two on the 12th lap. Strand appeared to begin diamonding off the third and fourth turns when he and Schill made contact as they battled for third in turn four. Strand headed pitside during the caution, ending his evening. John Buchner rolled his No. 5 machine on the ensuing restart. He was uninjured in the slow flop over.

During the 10 minute cleanup, Seng, who was looking for his first win at the speedway since 2022, pulled into the pit area briefly, relinquishing the lead and giving Peterson, who had been running third, the lead on the following restart.

Jason Strand and Brody Troftgruben were the other big winners following the red flag period, as Strand moved into second with Troftgruben in third. Strand and Troftgruben went side-by-side for second on the final restart with three to go, but it was all Peterson for the remainder of the race as he won his third Late Model feature of the season at the speedway. Jason Strand, Troftgruben, John Seng, and Joey Pederson rounded out the top five.

Jory Berg (Steven Young Photo)

Brennan Schmidt and Jory Berg made up the front row in the 20-lap WISSOTA Midwest Mod feature, with neither driver having a win at the speedway coming into the night. Berg led the opening lap ahead of Schmidt and Austin Hunter in the top three. Schmidt bobbled in turn two on the third lap, allowing Hunter to take second and Kenna Breidenbach to close in for the third spot.

Breidenbach and Aaron Blacklance went side-by-side for fourth in what became the best battle on the track before a caution on the fifth lap. Berg continued to lead ahead of Hunter and Schmidt as the race resumed and Blacklance moved in on Schmidt for second.

Following another slow down on lap seven, Berg continued to use the low side to his advantage as Hunter abandoned the top in an effort to keep pace with the leader. Berg continued to lead through further slowdowns on laps eight and 10 as Blacklance moved past both Schmidt and Hunter to move into the runner-up spot.

Blacklance cut into Berg's lead in traffic in the closing laps, but Berg went on to win his first of the season at the speedway. Hunter, Schmidt, and Breidenbach completed the top five.

Cole Greseth (Steven Young Photo)

Logan Hayes and Adam Dehne led the 20-lap WISSOTA Street Stock feature to green. Dehne led the opening circuit as Cole Greseth and Greg Jose split Hayes to move into second and third, respectively, with rookie Aaron Sigerud following them into fourth.

Dehne and Greseth began to pull away from the rest of the field, but Dehne appeared to break going into turn three on the third lap, causing Jose to run into the back of the now powerless No. 77D, and bring out the caution. Jose continued with the bumper of the No. 28 pushed back as sophomore competitor Blaine Barnes took third from Sigerud on the restart.

Greseth and Jose continued to be the class of the field in the division at the front of the field as Greseth continued to lead following the second caution on the eighth circuit. Greseth rebuilt an advantage of 1.5 seconds at the front of the field at the midway point and led the final 19 laps for his 16th feature win of the season and 16th career win in Grand Forks. Jose, John Halvorson, Josh Barker, and Doug VanMill completed the top five.

In the Legends, Sean Johnson came out on top, while Andy Pake won in Sprint action.
