Massingill, Randt, Smith & Larson lock up wins during Itasca County Clash at Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, MN (July 1) - Itasca County Clash night at Grand Rapids Speedway offered a rare Wednesday night racing opportunity at the Iron Range track. Racers and fans began their holiday weekend racing a day early, and WISSOTA Dirt Track Series racers capitalizing on the opportunity included Jeff Massingill, Landyn Randt, Jake Smith, and Ryker Larson.

Frank Paolo and Nick Seitz led the field of WISSOTA Midwest Mods to green, but Randt had the early advantage after lap one before second-place Seitz spun heading into turn four and field stacked up behind him.

Back under green, Randt drove back off away from the rest of the top five, before another yellow for another spun racer in turn four reset the field. Another caution in the same spot a couple laps later kept the field slowed.

With the field back under power, Randt was chased by a three-wide battle among Dylan Miller, Justin Jones and Sam Blevins - but three more cautions for spins in turn four prevented any sort of momentum for the race.

The race was called for time with 10 laps left and Randt took the win ahead of Miller, Jones, Michael Blevins, Sr. and Sam Blevins in the top five.

The WISSOTA Late Models were next on track, led to green by Massingill on the pole and Zach Wohlers to his outside. Massingill and Wohlers fought back and forth for the top spot, with Wohlers up on the top side and Massingill to the inside. Harry Hanson was third, under pressure from Kevin Burdick, with Billy Kendall in fifth.

With 10 laps to go, Massingill pulled away from the three-way battle for second among Hanson, Wohlers and Burdick. As Wohlers struggled with the high line, Hanson drove by into second and Burdick followed through to third. Kendall also displaced Wohlers to fifth as the No. 71 began to fade back.

Out front Massingill briefly struggled to get by a lapped car, but was able to navigate past and he drove to the checkered flag. Hanson, Burdick, Kendall and Kyle Peterlin completed the top five.

Ryker Larson and Nick Ruzich led the field of WISSOTA Hornets to the green flag, as Larson and Ruzich fought back and forth for the lead in the early stages, just ahead of McKenna Folstad and Mikayla LaBarge, who were side by side for third.

The top four stayed glued to each other, as Brady Fosso inherited fifth when Jacob Petrich left the track for the pits.

With three to go lapped traffic became a problem for Ruzich, who was hit by the lapped car and bobbled. This allowed Larson to escape with the victory unchallenged, while Ruzich’s quick recovery allowed him to hang onto second. Folstad, LaBarge and Fosso finished in the top five.

Mason Smith was the initial leader of the WISSOTA Pure Stock feature, before Jake drove by in the early going and took over out front. Austin Carlson was third, and Chad Puschinsky was fourth.

Jake Smith put some distance on Mason, though Mason was still in striking distance if Jake were to give him the opportunity. A caution for a stalled Karen Puschinsky regrouped the field.

Back under green, Jake continued to lead Mason, with Carlson and now Billy Binkley close behind. Carlson began to work Mason for second, getting by to the inside with three laps left on the board. Another caution for a spun racer along the backstretch regrouped the field.

It was a three-way cluster for the lead back under green, but Jake was able to escape the fight for second, which Carlson made his after a Mason bobble with one to go in turn four. Bob Klein’s late-race moves netted a fourth-place run, while Binkley completed the top five.
