Tourville topples Street Stock field for $1,000 last-to-first run while Doar, Keeler and Smith spin to wins at Gondik Law Speedway
By Nick Gima
SUPERIOR, WI (July 25) - Gondik Law Speedway hosted a racing program for the first time since the Fourth of July on Friday night, and it was a show not lacking in its own fireworks.
WISSOTA Dirt Track Series winners included Pat Doar, Keith Tourville, D.J. Keeler, and Jake Smith.
The most significant of the program’s runs from deep in the field came from Keith Tourville. He started dead last in the 24-car WISSOTA Street Stock feature field and wound up running away to the win and the $1,000 check.
Nick Traynor beat polesitter Danny Richards out of the first pair of turns to set the early pace. Hunter VanGilder moved past Richards on lap two and challenged Traynor relentlessly, as the lead pair pulled away. The field came back to them on lap five, however, for a spin by Travis Loew.
A lap after the restart, close-quarters racing resulted in Caiden Engel’s wild rollover down the back straightaway, which put the race under a red flag. Fortunately Engel crawled out of his car under his own power.
Back under green, Traynor pulled away from another tight-knit pack of cars racing for second, which included Tourville, who had worked his way to seventh for the restart. A lap-eight multi-car tangle eliminated some of those who were in the dogfight for second, and Tourville inherited fourth for the restart.
Tourville gained another spot when VanGilder spun in turn three after the restart, and a lap after going back to green Tourville made an inside move on Traynor and took over at the point, while Thomas Worth slipped by Richards for third. Tourville spent the next eight laps building a huge 4.3-second advantage, until the pace was slowed when Jenna Herrman’s racer burst into a ball of flame on lap 17. Herrman got out of her car quickly and safely.
Over the final three laps, Tourville re-established his dominance over the field, sprinting away to a 1.5-second final margin over Traynor, with Worth, a charging VanGilder, and Richards completing the top five.
Pat Doar (Tim Hunt Photo)
Pat Doar added to his track-leading WISSOTA Late Model feature win total with his 60th career victory on Friday. Polesitter Billy Kendall was dominant throughout the 25-lap run, pulling away from Jayme Lautigar and flying to a 1.4-second advantage just three laps in. Lautigar held Doar at bay for much of the run as well, while Kevin Burdick and Johnny Broking trailed at a distance.
Kendall was already into slower traffic by lap 10, and he negotiated through with relative ease with a 1.5-second lead, and he extended that lead by almost another full second once Lautigar, Doar and company met up with the backmarkers. Things became congested on lap 15, when Doar, Broking and Burdick were clogged among the lappers, and Burdick’s car went into a wild spin down the frontstretch and hit the inside wall hard next to the victory lane stage.
Doar took second away from Lautigar on the restart and set out after Kendall, closing to within .7 of a second at the final stripe. Kendall’s car was disqualified for a deck-height infraction in the post-race inspection, leaving Doar with his third win of the season at GLS. Broking, Dave Flynn, Lautigar and 18th-starter Jeff Massingill rounded out the top five.
DJ Keeler (Tim Hunt Photo)
In the only feature to run its distance without a caution, Keeler dominated the 20-lap WISSOTA Super Stock headliner for his first win of the season in Superior.
Starting outside on the front row, Keeler sped around polesitter Rick Simpson and wasted no time separating himself from the field, extending his lead to 1.4 seconds by lap four. Simpson held a comfortable margin over the battle for third between Austin Blom and Curt Myers, with Andy Grymala leading the next batch of cars. Myers took third from Blom on lap five and set a torrid pace to catch the lead pair, while Grymala displaced Blom a couple of laps later.
Keeler’s lead was more than 2.5 seconds just after the race’s midpoint, and he maintained that advantage on Simpson as the laps clicked off quickly on the smooth, wide, multi-lane track, catching the tail of the field and carefully maneuvering his way through the traffic over the final three laps. Myers, hoping to score his 400th career feature win on this night, closed on Simpson and actually nipped him at the line while threading his way through slower traffic for second, while Grymala and Alex Myers followed at a distance in fourth and fifth, respectively.
Jake Smith (Tim Hunt Photo)
Jake Smith finished off the night with the win in the WISSOTA Pure Stock feature. Smith, who started third, got by Tom Treviranus’ smoking car to take the initial lead, with Shane Basina and Eric Crosby duking it out for third.
Crosby won that battle on lap two and took over second when Treviranus’ car finally expired in a puff of smoke on lap three. But Smith was well out in front, with a 2.3-second cushion, until Dylan Helget’s car slowed to a stop with a brief fire under the hood on lap six.
Crosby stayed with the race leader as best he could, but Smith’s car was too strong on this night, holding a .75-second lead at the checkered flag for his first feature win of the season at the oval. Eighth-starter Jessie Treviranus came home third, followed by Basina and Derek Ament.
Ken Hron took advantage of a late restart to steal the win in the Northern Renegades’ 20-lap headliner.
