Copp, Brauer, Bolt, Simpson and Chernosky chew up rivals for $1500 checks at Thunder City’s Double Deuce

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO (July 24) - Following a one-day delay due to rain in the area on Wednesday, Thunder City Speedway hosted its 4th annual Richard Schutte “Double Deuce” Tribute night Thursday at the Thunder Bay oval.

Schutte was the visionary behind Thunder City Speedway, who poured his heart into building the track for the love of the sport and the community around it. Tragically, Schutte passed away before seeing the first race, but the result of his efforts can be seen each week. Each class raced for $1,500 to win, in addition to driver bonuses throughout each field.

WISSOTA Dirt Track Series winners included Brandon Copp, Kolton Brauer, Martin Bolt, David Simpson and Cole Chernosky.

In the WISSOTA Modifieds, Copp started on the pole and led from start to finish to garner the victory, his eighth of the season. Curtis Stieh, Chernosky, 10th-starter John Toppozini and Tanner Henderson completed the top five.

Brauer started from the front row in the WISSOTA Street Stocks, taking the lead from the get-go and cruising out to a 3.5-second advantage at the checkered flag ahead of Trey Hess in second. Kyle Bolt and Darren Wolframe were third and fourth, while 19th-starter Tyson Waller charged his way to fifth at the finish.

Bolt took off from the front row in the WISSOTA Hornets and led flag to flag for his feature win. Kristina Moro finished second, Spencer Smith improved three spots to third, Rick Breukelman was fourth and Kathleen Speaker completed the top five.

In the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds, David Simpson led from the second lap onward, but it was a tooth-and-nail final battle to the checkered flag between National Point leader Tyler Vernon and Simpson. Just .112 of a second separated Simpson from Vernon at the line, with Simpson taking the checkered flag. Vernon, who started 16th on the grid, charged his way through the field to his runner-up honors, while 14th-starter Tanner Ulakovic finished in third. Kevin Monteith and Dan Tocheri were top-five finishers.

Chernosky took the lead a few laps into the WISSOTA Super Stock class and drove off to more than a 4-second lead to garner the feature win. He was chased to the checkered flag by Shawn Polonoski, eighth-starter Rick Simpson, 10th-starter Andrew Groom and Danny Young in the top five.
