Bohlman, Putnam, Howland & Larson lead the way at Princeton’s Bob Peterson Memorial on Friday
PRINCETON, MN (July 10) - It was the Bob Peterson Memorial and “Sparkle” night Friday at Princeton Speedway, with WISSOTA Dirt Track Series winners including Adam Bohlman in the Modifieds, Ryan Putnam in the Midwest Modifieds, Kyle Howland in the Street Stocks, and Tyler Larson in the Mod Fours.
Putnam was the early leader in the WISSOTA Midwest Mod feature, as Ariel Mueller tried to keep Jason VandeKamp and Tate Kostreba behind. A caution for Patrick McCarthy regrouped the field.
On the ensuing restart, Putnam shot out to the lead with heavy pressure from VandeKamp. Mueller lost another spot to Chance Kodet, and slipped back through the field after getting too high on the track, allowing Kostreba and Brady Larson to drive on by. Mueller then spun to bring the field to a halt in turn one. Several cars were collected in the incident.
With 11 to go, the field was back under green, Putnam held the lead ahead of VandeKamp, as Kodet and Larson continued to exchange sliders for third. Kodet slipped over the banking and back through the field, as Larson held third ahead of Dustin Nelson and Kris Macko. Kostrebra regained a top-five spot the following lap.
Putnam’s lead was a little more than 1 second with two to go, and he held on for the victory ahead of VandeKamp, Larson, Nelson and Kostreba.
Kyle Howland and Layla Chaplin led the field of seven WISSOTA Street Stocks to the green, and Howland held the early advantage. Chaplin was a solid second, ahead of Charlie Shiek. Alaina Chaplin and Trent Keller fought back and forth for fourth before a yellow fell for Kelsy Siercks.
With the field back under green, Howland was able to separate himself a bit from Chaplin, while Shiek and Keller were side by side for third. Disaster then struck as Howland spun on his own, collecting much of the rest of the field. Howland went to the back of the pack.
After a delay for Keller, who left to change his tire, the field went green with Layla Chaplin in the lead with 10 to go. One lap later Howland was back to third behind Shiek, before Layla’s sister Alaina spun and the caution came back out.
Howland made his move on the ensuing restart, regaining the lead from Chaplin one lap after the green.
Another caution for an Alaina Chaplin and Siercks dustup regrouped the field once more under yellow. In the five lap dash to the finish Howland came out on top, with Layla Chaplin second. Shiek, Keller and Siercks completed the top five.
Zach Benson was the early leader in the WISSOTA Modified feature, with heavy pressure from Bohlman to his inside. Travis Schulte and Don Eischens fought for third, before Schulte took the spot for his own. Eischens then fell into the clutches of Clayton Wagamon, but was able to fight back and regain fourth.
Out front Benson had a miscue along the high side, which allowed Bohlman to scoot by. Schulte also displaced Benson to third, and soon Benson was challenged by Eischens for the spot.
Bohlman continued to show the way past the halfway mark of the race. Schulte was second, Benson third, Eischens fourth and Dave Cain cracked the top five.
With one lap to go, Bohlman was under heavy pressure from Schulte but prevailed, taking the victory ahead of Schulte, Benson, Eischens and Cain in the top five.
Doug Frederick and Thomas Burgard led the WISSOTA Mod Fours to their green flag; after a wreck in the middle of the starting grid at the drop of the green, the field regrouped under caution.
Burgard pulled away with the advantage at the end of lap one, while Connor Bruss, Frederick, Dean Larson and Dustin Holtquist held early top five spots. Holtquist passed Larson shortly after for fourth, and clipped off another spot into third ahead of Frederick and Tyler Larson, who appeared in fifth.
Out front Burgard began to feel the heat from Bruss, but a caution for an Andrew Christianson and Dustin Holtquist get-together brought the field back under yellow.
With the green back out Burgard continued in the lead, while Bruss, Tyler Larson and Dean Larson went three wide for second. Tyler Larson broke away with second, and set chase after Burgard; he made the pass for the lead with eight to go, as Bruss hung in third close behind. Dean Larson and Frederick held top-five spots. Burgard and Bruss continued to fight for the second spot, trading it back and forth before Bruss pulled away with four to go.
Tyler Larson extended his lead in the closing laps and took the win ahead of Bruss, Burgard, Dean Larson and Frederick in the top five.
In the track’s other action, Zeke Oppegaard won in the Crown Vic class, Mike Mueller topped the Winged Sprints, and Cam Schaefer won the Traditional Sprint Car feature.
