Nelson knocks off Street Stock Tour rivals at Grand Rapids; Brokings, Smith & Graves get wins as well

GRAND RAPIDS, MN (July 11) - Grand Rapids Speedway hosted the Fast Lane Motorsports Northland WISSOTA Super Stock Series Saturday, with Dylan Nelson - a former series champion - getting the win.

Other WISSOTA Dirt Track Series winners joining him in victory lane included Bob Broking, Jake Smith, Zeb Graves and Johnny Broking.

In what became a two-man show in the WISSOTA Pure Stocks, Smith survived several challenges to his lead from Austin Carlson to garner the victory. Carlson, Dylan Elhardt and Bob Klein were the remaining finishers in the field.

Broking was the early leader of the WISSOTA Late Model feature as he swung past fellow front-row starter Jeff Massingill for the lead. Ben Heinle was third, and Josh Beaulieu and Derek Vesel fought hard for fourth in the initial stages of the feature.

Out front, Broking escaped from Massingill with a huge lead, but reached the back of the field two-wide in front of him at about the halfway point. It did not slow him down at all, however, and he continued to the checkered flag with his giant advantage. Massingill, Vesel, Heinle and Kyle Peterlin completed the top five.

Dylan Nelson (Jennifer Tomczyk Photo)

In the headlining Fast Lane Motorsports Northland Super Stock Series feature, Dylan Nelson and Rick Simpson were neck and neck for the early lead, as they raced side by side for several laps for the top spot. Alex Myers was third. Out front, Nelson was able to edge away from Simpson into the lead around lap seven.

The front-runners began to make their way through the back of the pack; Nelson continued his stronghold and raced on through heavy lapped traffic undeterred. Steve Stuart then came to a spinning stop along the top of turn four and the field was reset under yellow with 11 laps left on the board.

Back under green, Nelson skated away again from the side-by-side battle for second between Simpson and Myers. Tommy Richards was close behind in fourth. About a lap later he drove by both Simpson and Myers into second.

It was all Nelson out front in the remaining laps, as he took home the big check ahead of Richards, who started 10th on the field. Myers, Don Livingston, and Kyle Copp completed the top five.

Bob Broking (Jennifer Tomczyk Photo)

Broking was the early leader of the WISSOTA Modified feature, jumping out to a substantial advantage ahead of Chris Magistad. Mervin Castle III moved to the inside of Magistad and took second, as T.J. Heinle hung out in fourth.

Following a caution for Ryan Jensen around the halfway point of the race, Broking felt heavy pressure from Castle after the restart. Broking was able to pull away slightly down the front and backstretches, with Castle challenging him in turn one, pulling alongside several times, but unable to make the pass. Broking was able to pull away in the last few laps and took the win comfortably ahead of Castle. Magistad, Heinle and Jaxon Helland finished in the top five.

Zeb Graves (Jennifer Tomczyk Photo)

In the WISSOTA Hornets, Tucker Smith held the lead for several laps before Zeb Graves made the pass for the top spot along the high side. Trenton Beel was third, and then got past Smith to second.

Beel went after Graves, racing side by side for a bit before Graves pulled away again. Following a caution, and another on the ensuing restart, 10th-starter McKenna Folstad moved into second behind Graves, at times right on his bumper but unable to get by. Graves drove on and collected the victory ahead of Folstad, Beel, Jacob Petrich, and Astion Schelde in the top five.
