Goth, Zabel and Schmeling smack down WISSOTA competition Friday at Brown County Speedway
By Spencer Heupel
ABERDEEN, SD (June 27) - Brown County Speedway was back in action with a special show including the Northern Outlaw Sprint Association and Midwest Sprint Touring Series 410 Sprint cars, along with four WISSOTA Dirt Track Series-sanctioned classes.
There were 96 drivers in the pit area set to battle for their spot in victory lane, and winners in the WISSOTA classes included Dawson Zabel, Matt Goth, and Cayden Schmeling.
The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds hit the track with 22 drivers on hand for their feature. The field was brought to green by Zach Jung and Dawson Zabel, and they battled side by side for opening laps until Zabel secured the advantage. The field was able to use the entire track, moving from top to bottom.
Ryan Flaten made his way past Jung and began chasing down Zabel. The lead duo were in lapped traffic with 10 to go, but caution struck one lap later. The field was re-racked, but another caution kept the field under yellow.
Zabel and Flaten pulled away from the rest of the field back under green. The lead duo both ran the inside line around the track. The caution waved again with only three laps left.
During the final restart, Ryan Ost ran the top side to challenge Flaten and Zabel, but could not find any grip. Zabel fended off Flaten on the bottom to score his first win of 2025. Ost, 10th-starter Jarod Klein and Kyle Langland completed the top five.
Matt Goth (Allen Becker Photo)
Twenty-one drivers in the WISSOTA Street Stocks took the green flag, with Matt Goth and Maria Broksieck battling side by side for the lead for the opening four circuits. Goth finally edged ahead, as Jayden Bogh looked to the inside of Broksieck for second. They ran door to door for several laps until caution struck with eight laps to go.
The upcoming restart was the final one as Goth and Bogh pulled away and set to finish the battle between themselves. Farther back Kyle Bertram, who started eighth, found his way up to third and reeled in the top two.
Bogh searched all over the track, trying to get around Goth, but had no success. Goth held on to grab his first-ever win at Brown County. Bogh, Bertram, Broksieck, and Zachary Flickinger were top five finishers.
Cayden Schmeling (Allen Becker Photo)
The WISSOTA Modifieds hit the track with 15 drivers checked in. It was a pair of Watertown drivers on the front row with Cayden Schmeling and Jayson Good setting the pace; Schmeling grabbed the initial lead. Caution struck on lap two when Good lost his driveshaft.
Following the restart, fans saw what was the battle of the night; Adam Brotherton moved into second and began to pressure Schmeling. They were side by side, with Schmeling on the top and Brotherton rolling the bottom. As they battled, they raced each other clean and traded the lead so many times it was hard for race fans to keep track.
Finally, with four to go, Brotherton seemed to be pulling ahead. Two laps later, however, it was a different story as Schmeling found something in the high groove to rally back around the No. 14 machine on the final lap. Schmeling railed the cushion all the way around and carried the momentum to score the win. The win was Schmeling’s first of the year. Brotherton, Dale Ames, Justin Froemming and Nate Heinrich were top-five finishers.
In the NOSA/MSTS 410 Sprints feature, 21 drivers were on hand for a $3,000 payday. Tim Kaeding found victory lane after a very intense battle with Jack Dover through lapped traffic.
The WISSOTA Super Stocks rolled out for their feature, but Mother Nature had other plans and the skies opened up. The feature was rained out with a makeup to be run at a later date.
