Koehler, Myers, Cimfl and Richards roll to WISSOTA wins and fans also treated to some Sprint Car action at Rice Lake

RICE LAKE, WI (May 31) - Four of the weekly WISSOTA-sanctioned classes were in action on Saturday at Rice Lake Speedway, during a night when the Sprints were in town as well. WISSOTA Dirt Track Series winners included Nick Koehler, Alex Myers, Cody Cimfl and George Richards.

In the WISSOTA Midwest Mods, Koehler won for the fourth time in five tries, dominating a class that usually has many winners each season. Saturday night he started on the outside pole next to Jake Stai. Things almost went sideways in the first corner though, as Stai spun while desperately trying to grab the initial lead. Somehow, the rest of the pack managed to avoid a big opening lap collision, but Stai went to the back for the restart.

Mike Schnider started alongside Koehler on the front row, and Koehler got the jump on Schnider to take the early lead. Schnider, Brady Larson and Travis Anderson set chase.

Two more yellow flags for spinning cars in the first half of the race slowed the action, as Koehler continued to lead with Larson moving to second. Larson was running the cushion and closing to within a couple car lengths of the leader, while seventh-starter Blake Adams eased his way to the front. He drove by Anderson and then Schnider before Cade Johnson stalled in turn three and set up a three-lap sprint to the finish.

Koehler was up to the task, driving home unchallenged for the win. Adams put much pressure on for second, but Larson retained the spot. Cole Kelley made a late run up to fourth ahead of Anderson.

Alex Myers (Brent Creaser Photo)

Alex Myers is the driver to beat in the WISSOTA Super Stock class. He started on the pole and led all 20 laps to claim his second Super Stock feature win of the year. In doing so, he became the first repeat winner in the class while also winning for the second straight Saturday night.

Cory Davis stuck with Myers for the first couple of laps before Leslie Leu took over the spot. Soon after, the Olson family came calling, with both Ryan and Eric challenging Leu for second.

Myers was running smoothly up front and began to pull away from the field while the battle for second heated up. Ryan worked the bottom side of the track well and he burst into second with his father Eric soon following him past Leu for third.

With only a single yellow to slow the action just before the halfway point, Myers continued to hold the lead, while Olsons were having quite the battle for second.

Myers continued on, never having to endure any real challenges for the win. In lapped traffic at the end, Ryan held back Eric and claimed the runner-up honors. Leu was fourth and Austin Harris completed the top five.

Cody Cimfl (Brent Creaser Photo)

Connor Franson started on the pole of the WISSOTA Street Stock feature and did a great job fighting off early race challenges from Cody Cimfl and Danny Richards, who nearly got by the whole pack by riding the cushion. However, Franson maintained his line as he drove a smooth line around the track.

A late-race restart following a spin on the front chute proved to be his downfall. He spun his tires when the green was displayed; Cimfl timed his move perfectly and he was able to slip inside Franson and take over the lead. For the last three laps, Cimfl then pulled away despite Franson's efforts to catch him.

As Cimfl extended his lead, Franson pushed up the track on the final lap, which allowed third-row starter Hunter VanGilder to drive under him and claim second. Franson had to settle for third, ahead of Cody Kummer and Richards.

For Cimfl, it was his first feature win of the season and only his second ever in a Street Stock.

George Richards (Brent Creaser Photo)

George Richards is currently second in all-time feature wins at Rice Lake in the WISSOTA Pure Stock class, but had not won a feature at RLS in more than a year. He took care of that statistic on Saturday, leading from start to finish in a nonstop main event.

He had Bob Wahlstrom and Rob Grabon on his heels for the entire race, as they were bumper to bumper right behind him. The top three circled the track for 15 laps in that fashion, but Richards did not slip up.

At the line, Richards took the win with Wahlstrom glued to his rear bumper and Grabon inches behind for third. C.J. Wagner brought his station wagon home fourth with rookie driver Mark Barta completing the top five.

It was his Richards 28th feature win in the Pure Stocks at Rice Lake, trailing only Jason Havel for the all-time lead.

In the visiting Sprint Car classes, Cam Schafer topped the Traditional Sprint feature and Garrett Tatnell won the Winged Sprint main event.
