Field of 126 storms into I-94 Speedway to race for the fans on a dicey day Friday
By Ron Krog
FERGUS FALLS, MN (June 19) - Sometimes the racing gods give you a break, and Friday night was proof of that at I-94 Speedway. With storms all around the speedway, some with hail, it did not look promising for the Fergus Falls track throughout the day. However, the skies cleared just in time for a 126-car program of WISSOTA Dirt Track Series action and the track’s Gen X Late Models, while the featured class of the night was the NLRA Late Models.
Winners in sanctioned action included Dave Mass, Travis Saurer, Matt Schow, Jeff Rohner and Eric Riley.
The WISSOTA Street Stocks got things rolling, as Riley took the early lead with plenty of pressure from Cole Greseth and Levi Randt. The top three did not separate much during the race until four laps to go, when Randt got by Greseth for second, and Darek Turner made a late surge to take fourth. Riley was the man Friday, taking the win ahead of Randt, Greseth, Turner and Joshua Schroeder in the top five.
Matt Schow (Track Photo)
A nice field of 27 WISSOTA Midwest Mods charged to the speedway Matt Schow and Reise Stenberg out front in the early going, but Schow was really dialed in. The battle for third was a good one, as Ron Saurer and Jon Carlson went back and forth before Jake Smith charged ahead to take third. Schow soared to the eventual victory ahead of Stenberg, Smith, Jon Carlson, and Saurer in the top five.
Dave Mass (Track Photo)
The NLRA WISSOTA Late Models were led early on by Mass, as Cole Schill and Blake Boelens fought back and forth for second, and Tyler Peterson was close in fourth.
Mass looked like he had the race in the bag, but Dustin Strand made a tremendous late-race surge to try to catch him. Strand came up short however, and finished second to Mass, who took the big win. Shane Edginton, Peterson, and Schill rounded out the top five.
Travis Saurer (Track Photo)
The WISSOTA Mods had double features Friday, and Travis Saurer had a fantastic night. He grabbed the regular win with a nice pass on Dusty Bitzan, who had one slip-up which allowed Saurer to take advantage. Brady Gerdes was third with Brandon Dolman in fourth. Shane Sabraski completed the top five.
The makeup feature picked up on lap three, with Saurer leading. Again, he was just plain too fast for anybody to overtake him and he claimed the victory in the makeup feature from May 8 as well. Joe Thomas was second, and Bitzan was strong again in third, just ahead of Tyler Peterson and Shane Sabraski in the top five.
Jeff Rohner (Track Photo)
The WISSOTA Hornets sent 21 cars to the starting grid with Jeff Rohner taking the lead early. Lincoln Miller and Chase Golliet gave Rohner a good fight, but in the end Rohner hung on for the win. Golliet, Christian Kast, Miller and Nelson completed the top five.
The Gen X Late Models were led early on by Jeff Nelson, before Blake Swenson took charge and grabbed the win.
