Holtan, Drewry, Gust and Smith speed away from Greenbush feature foes

By Daniel Wiskow

GREENBUSH, MN (June 20) - Greenbush Race Park was ready for action after a full dose of H20 from Mother Nature. The added water in the racing surface made for some fast lap times and lots of close-quarters action.

WISSOTA Dirt Track Series winners included Aaron Holtan, Connor Drewry, Jeremy Gust and Mason Smith.

Kade Leaper and Alex Berg led the field of the WISSOTA Pure Stocks to the opening green flag of the evening. Leaper had the early lead, as four cars battled for the top spot after a few short laps. Mason Smith worked his way to the lead but there were several drivers running at the same pace; Hunter Wescott was soon challenging for the top spot, along with Chris Smeby. Just when it looked like Wescott was about to take the lead, Smeby slipped by and stole second and made a run for first. He came up short, however, as Smith took the win, followed by Smeby and Wescott on the podium.

The WISSOTA Street Stocks hit the gas pedal, led by Jeremy Gust and Jon Halvorson. At the drop of the green Gust and Halvorson started their fight for the lead.

Following a restart, Halvorson was shuffled out of contention back to fourth. Jerome Berger and Deryk Weleski then joined in the fun for a few laps. Shortly after the restart Halvorson worked his back to the rear bumper of Gust, as he made several attempts at taking the lead in the last eight laps of the race. When the final bell rang, Gust fended off the charge from Halvorson in one of the more entertaining and clean races of the season. Berger was third.

As the track started to develop some character, the WISSOTA Midwest Mods were next on deck. Connor Drewry and Evan Gust shared the front row as the field took the green flag. Drewry was out front and changed his lines a few times as he skillfully drove around the technical racing surface. Aiden Olson was close enough to sniff the lead for a few laps early in the race. As the laps dwindled, Drewry was too tough to beat and finished with a comfortable lead. He was followed by Aeden Olson and Justin Olson on the podium.

Connor Graff and Ryan Hagen led the WISSOTA Modifieds to the green and both drivers faced adversity as the race ensued. Hagen was involved in some contact and shuffled back in the pack of cars. Graff suffered the same fate, but later in the race.

After a second restart Ryan Schroeder used the high line and put on a show as he drove his car to the limit of the high side of the track. Aaron Holtan worked his way into second and tried to keep pace running the low line. He then changed his line and slowly reeled in the leader. A caution put Holtan on the rear bumper of Schroeder with three laps remaining; Holtan made a pass attempt entering the third turn, with Schroeder making contact and spinning him out. Schroeder was forced to the rear for the infraction. Holtan went on to get the win followed by Jordan Duray and Bill Yonke in the top three.

In the track’s Four Cylinders class, Nick McCann took the victory with a healthy advantage ahead of Jayme Gordon and Brooke McCann in the top three.

The Lightning Sprints had a fast track and laid down very fast lap times. Dexter Dvergsten assumed the lead following a restart, as 10th-starter Alan Truscinski picked his way forward through the field to second. When the dust settled, Dvergsten took the win, while Truscinski and Hayden Koehmstedt completed the top three.
