Two nights of action at Bemidji produces a wealth of WISSOTA feature winners
By Dennis Peterson
BEMIDJI, MN (May 24-25) - Memorial Weekend is a weekend to remember and thank those who served and gave all for our freedoms. Bemidji Speedway celebrated those freedoms with the “Jack Sparby Memorial, Chicken Shack Nationals” Sunday and Monday, May 24-25. Prayers were offered for those lost and also for the families of Kyle Busch and Allen Foster, who recently lost their lives. A special on track tribute was presented for the memory of Allen Foster on Monday.
More than 100 competitors were on hand for the full weekend of action in eight classes. WISSOTA Dirt Track Series winners on Sunday included Jeff Reed, Jory Berg, Steve Stuart, Scott Messner, Ashton Schwinn, Austin Carlson, Colton Lodermeier, while Monday’s winners included Davey Mills, Ashton Schwinn, Dalton Carlson, Landon Gross, Kolton Brauer, Austin Carlson and William Lange.
Sunday, May 24
Ten WISSOTA Street Stocks were led on track by Doug VanMill and Lucas Boyce. Van Mill took the early lead with Scotty Messner close behind. Messner raced inside down the front straight into the lead, as Greg Jose slipped into second. Messner took the initial feature win ahead of Jose, Weston Ramsrud, VanMill and John Halvorson in the top five.
Nineteen WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds rolled on track next led by Hunter Weeks and Jory Berg. Berg blasted to the lead with Weeks, Devin Fouquette, Brennan Schmidt and Justin Olson following in the top five.
Following a caution, Fouquette raced inside into second. Berg and Fouquette dueled side by side to the finish line, with Berg taking the checkered flag ahead of Fouquette. Weeks, Schmidt and Kenna Breidenbach were top-five finishers.
The WISSOTA Hornets were next on track with Aiden Kessler on the pole and Chris Nelson, of the “Never Alone” race team, to his outside. Nelson blasted to the lead first ahead of Colton Lodermeier, Aiden Kessler, Adam Kessler and Asher Tuttle in the top five.
It was an excellent duel for the lead, with Nelson and Lodermeier, and then Kessler joining in to make it a three-way battle for the top spot. Lodermeier eventually made the pass, and in a flag-to-flag race picked up the win. Adam Kessler was second followed by Nelson. Asher Tuttle and Aiden Kessler completed the top five.
A field of 14 WISSOTA Pure Stocks were led to green by Shannon George and Landon Weeks. At the green flag, George moved to the lead with Weeks and Billy Binkley in the top three in a tight racing configuration. Fourth-row starter Austin Carlson was on the move on the high side and made steady progress toward the front; finally down the front straight he took over the lead. Carlson made it a clean sweep to take the win, ahead of George, Binkley, Josh Bitker and Mason Smith in the top five.
Veteran racers Alan Olafson and Jeff Reed led the pack of WISSOTA Modifieds down the front straight; Olafson was the initial leader ahead of Reed, followed by Devyn Weleski. Weleski slid up high and dropped back several positions.
Following a restart, Reed was in the lead with Doyle Erickson and Olafson in the top three. Erickson moved up and battled with Reed on numerous attempts, but Reed was fast and took the win ahead of Erickson, Olafson, Davey Mills and Weleski in the top five.
Ashton Schwinn (Lisa Rhen Photo)
A tremendous field of WISSOTA Mod Fours entered the west end of the front straight led by Brooke Erickson and Jordan Thayer. The fast and hard-charging Ashton Schwinn blasted to the high side along the back straightaway into the lead from his second row starting position. Thayer, Dexyn Habraken, Patrick Specht and Conner Bruss held the top five spots.
Schwinn was flying and had a half-lap lead over the field while the next four were bumper to bumper. A multi-car spin and crash on the front straightaway slowed the action for a restart bringing the field back together. Schwinn once again powered to the lead, with Specht racing up into second. Schwinn had a powerful showing and took the clean sweep ahead of Specht, Habraken, Bruss and Dean Larson in the top five.
Steve Stuart (Lisa Rhen Photo)
Dalton Carlson was on the pole of the WISSOTA Super Stock feature, with Brandon Bahr outside in row one. Carlson took the lead followed by Bahr, Justin Barsness and Mikey Vajdl in the early going. Racing hard up on the top side of the track was Steven Stuart. With each lap he picked his way to the front in impressive fashion. Stuart raced to a half-lap lead and picked up the feature win, his first at Bemidji Speedway. Carlson, Bahr, Vajdl, and Rick Simpson trailed in the top five.
A strong field of 17 Mini Stocks took over the track next led by Hayden Engen on the pole with Conrad Schwinn to his right. Schwinn raced to the lead in what became a “crash” fest, with many cautions slowing the action. Schwinn held his line and picked up the win ahead of Nick McCann, Engen, Cory Nelson, and Cameron Schwinn in the top five.
Monday, May 25
The Memorial Day Monday races began with the WISSOTA Street Stocks on track and Greg Jose on the pole. Front-row starter Kolton Brauer and Jose were chased by Sunday’s winner Scotty Messner in third. Deryk Welelski looked to make his move and caught and passed Messner for third. Brauer and Jose dueled most of the race for the lead and Brauer held on for the win. Jose, Weleski, Messner and Billy Binkley finished in the top five.
Landon Gross (Lisa Rhen Photo)
Sixteen WISSOTA Midwest Mods rolled on track with a pair of No. 15s in the front row, including Kenna Breidenbach and Landon Gross. Gross was the leader into turn one, followed by Breidenbach, Jory Berg, Brennan Schmidt and Josh Beaulieu. Berg moved up and passed Breidenbach for second as Beaulieu had mechanical issues and dropped out. Carter Matthews was looking fast and passed Schmidt for third.
Gross took home the eventual win ahead of Berg, Matthews, Schmidt and Breidenbach in the top five.
Will Lange (Lisa Rhen Photo)
Buzzing on track, the 13 WISSOTA Hornets were next up, led by Emma Nelson and William Lange. Lange powered to the early lead on the outside, chased by Chase Golliet and Nelson. Tyson Roush passed Nelson for third.
The race was a three-car, nose-to-tail race to the finish line, with Lange taking the checkered flag. Chase Golliet, Roush, Kessler and Nelson completed the top five.
A tremendous field of WISSOTA Pure Stocks rolled on track 18 strong, led by Austin Carlson on the pole and Shannon George to his outside. Carlson once again took the lead ahead of George, Kade Leeper, Landon Weeks and Billy Binkley in the top five. The caution flag waved, sending the young Weeks to the rear for the restart.
Carlson was smooth and steady in completing a clean sweep of both days of racing, and picked up his second feature win. George, Binkley, Mason Smith and Josh Bitker were top-five finishers.
Davey Mills (Lisa Rhen Photo)
A small field of WISSOTA Modifieds entered the track led by Jeff Reed on the pole and Davey Mills to his right. Mills was ready and blasted to the lead ahead of Reed, looking incredibly fast in his second race of the season. Doyle Erickson and Alan Olafson put on a show racing for third, with Erickson holding on for the spot after a side-by-side duel. Mills cruised to the win ahead of Reed, Erickson and Olafson.
Once again a great field of WISSOTA Mod Fours were on hand Monday, with 16 racers led on track by Chad Erlandson and Ashton Schwinn along the front row. Schwinn was first into turn one with Erlandson and Dean Larson in the top three. Schwinn quickly built a sizable lead while Erlandson dueled with Larson and Blake Erickson. A huge multi-car crash slowed the racing, followed by more caution periods. Eventually Schwinn picked up the win ahead of Larson, Erlandson, Erickson and Connor Bruss in the top five.
Dalton Carlson (Lisa Rhen Photo)
A dozen WISSOTA Super Stocks roared on track, led by Dalton Carlson on the pole and Ron Reed to his right. Carlson raced to the lead, chased by Reed and Nic Lewis after one lap. Sunday winner Steve Stuart tried the high side once again, but this time did not find the traction needed. Carlson built his commanding lead ahead of Reed and Lewis. Third-row starter Justin Barsness made progress, passing both Lewis and Reed for second. Out front, Carlson brought home the win ahead of Barsness, Lewis, Cameron Labelle and Stuart in the top five.
Fourteen Mini Stocks made the feature; Hayden Engen powered to the lead with Cameron Schwinn and Nick McCann in contention, chased by Conrad Schwinn. Conrad Schwinn got by McCann for third and then passed his son Cameron for second. Engen was fast and steady in picking up the win. Conrad Schwinn, Cameron Schwinn, McCann and Troy Foster completed the top five.
