RICE LAKE, WI (June 5) - Tommy Richards made a late-race surge and passed Curt Myers with only three laps left to score the Fastlane Motorsports Northland Super Stock Series 2025 opener Thursday, June 5 at Rice Lake Speedway.
The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds were also part of the evening. Shadow Kitchner held off late-race challenges from Ashley Boyum and Nick Koehler to take the win in that class.
With drivers on hand from as far away as Manitoba, 35 WISSOTA Super Stock drivers signed in to race, with 26 qualifying for the 30-lap feature. Fans enjoyed an ultra-competitive program, with five different leaders during the course of the main event.
Jesse Redetzke grabbed the early lead from the pole ahead of Leslie Leu, Austin Niemeyer and Austin Blom, who were close behind.
Coming down the front chute with the pack in tight and high-speed formation, a car hit the frontstretch wall, and bounced back into traffic. Before the field could get slowed, several violent collisions took place right under the flagstand of starter Tom Clausen.
Track point leader Eric Olson was slammed hard at least two times and ended up pitched sideways on the track, with the car of Chris Wark sitting on its side and planted across the hood of Olson's car. Olson was shaken up but refused attention, and it took the wrecker crews several minutes to remove both cars from the track. Dylan Nelson and Trenton Bond were also a part of the crash and all four cars were eliminated from the race with heavy damage.
Redetzke was the leader for the restart, under pressure from Leu and Niemeyer. Just two laps later, driving down the back chute, Redetzke suddenly slowed and dove into the infield. Leu took advantage by moving into the lead as the race continued under the green.
Leu could not escape the pursuit of several other drivers, however, and suddenly the leaders were racing three wide around the track. Niemeyer edged ahead by inches to lead lap seven, but then they went right back to a three-wide formation; by the next lap, 10th-starter Richards edged into the top spot.
The yellow flew again when Alex Myers hit the backstretch wall hard and his car had to be removed from the track on a wrecker.
Back under green, Richards retained the lead over Niemeyer when suddenly 15th-starter Curt Myers moved his way into third.
Continuing his tear, Myers passed Niemeyer for second and then took off after Richards.
On lap 11, Myers became the fifth different leader of the race when he got under Richards and took over out front. Other drivers were also on the move by the halfway point of the event, 14th-starter Terran Spacek was up to third and challenged Richards for the runner-up spot.
Myers continued to hold the lead, as he was able to maintain about a six-car length advantage over Richards, who continued to have Spacek nipping at his heels.
With the last 21 laps continuing under green, the drivers settled in. With the end of the race approaching, Myers started to catch the back of the pack where about six or more cars were all battling for position. He continued to maintain his advantage, but he had to decide whether to ride behind the backmarkers or try to pass them.
Myers opted for the second choice and on this occasion, it came back to bite him. When he moved up the track to try and get by the slower cars, the top was quite slippery and his car pushed up toward the wall, causing him to lose all but two car lengths of his advantage over Richards, as the leaders raced down the backstretch.
Undaunted, Myers tried the high side again in turn three and the same thing happened again; this time, as Myers attempted to get back down the track toward the low groove, Richards drove past him and into the lead with just two laps to go. Myers lost so much ground he was unable to mount a charge and Richards then continued on, holding the lead by several car lengths ahead of Myers as the leaders took the checkered flag.
Richards earned $1,000 plus other contingencies. Myers had to settle for second with Spacek driving home third. Two other drivers made notable chargers through the pack, as defending Super Stock National Champion - and defending winner of this race - Dexton Koch drove up from 17th to finish fourth.
Shane Sabraski was fifth from his 21st starting spot, earning him hard charger honors. He received $200 in honor of all-time Super Stock feature win leader at the Rice Lake Speedway, Don Drew, who was in attendance.
For Richards, it was his third-ever feature win at Rice Lake.

In the WISSOTA Midwest Mods, Kitchner made a great move on the opening lap of the feature, locking him into the lead. He moved under Michael Truscott in the fourth turn, coming from the second row to take over the top spot. While Kitchner held sway out front, there was an intense battle right behind him as Les Duellman, Ashley Boyum and Brady Larson all raced hard for position.
When the first yellow flew with nine laps complete, Boyum had edged into the runner-up slot with Duellman right behind. Nick Koehler, a four-time winner at the track this season, was in fourth by this time; when the green reappeared, he and Larson battled hard with Duellman, before edging past him.
The last nine laps of the race were green and the leaders tore around the track. Kitchner had his car wired to the fast lane and there was no catching him Thursday. He drove under the double checkered flags with several lengths ahead of Boyum, who drove an excellent race to finish second. Koehler pushed his hardest, but he had to settle for third with Larson next in line. Thirteenth-starter Tyler Vernon completed the top five. Kitchner earned $800 for his midweek victory.
