Mass scores win in Late Model headliner at Ogilvie Saturday, along with feature toppers Sabraski, Kostreba, Smith, Ekdahl and Jenson
By Tami Jo Kuehn
OGILVIE, MN (May 3) - An impressive field of drivers checked in Saturday night at Wagamon’s Ogilvie Raceway for a night of WISSOTA Dirt Track Series action.
Winners included Dave Mass, Shane Sabraski, Ryan Kostreba, Tony Jenson, Jake Smith and Jeff Ekdahl.
The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds were 42 drivers strong prior to heat race action, with only 24 spots in the starting feature grid available. Jake Smith pulled away early as the feature began, with Jake Hagemann, Landyn Randt and Joey Jensen in a battle for second. Drivers in the top five behind Smith remained close for second as laps went by, until Randt secured the spot.
Smith had begun to weave his way through lapped traffic before a caution fell with three to go. He was in command on the restart, with Jensen and Randt to his rear. Smith led those final laps and took the win with Joey Jensen, Landyn Randt, Wyatt Boyum and David Swearingen in the top five.
Jeff Ekdahl (Mark Anderson Photo)
Following a lap-one caution in the WISSOTA Street Stocks, Levi Randt took command out front. Jeff Ekdahl was second and chased after Randt’s No. 11. Ekdahl was all over Randt as they pulled away from the pack and remained close. Ekdahl worked the low groove and high groove, however the young driver was able to hold the advantage.
With the final laps in sight, they remained close, but as the race came to its conclusion, Randt clipped a track tire and Jeff Ekdahl shot by for the win. Tommy Pogones, Braedyn Fleck, Rachel Boston and Darren Wolframe completed the top five.
Shane Sabraski (Mark Anderson Photo)
Skeeter Estey and Shane Sabraski brought the WISSOTA Modifieds to the green and Sabraski sped off with the lead. Estey and Ryan Gierke battled for second while Sabraski stretched his lead out front. Drivers settled into positions until the yellow appeared. Sabraski’s three-second advantage was gone as the drivers were regrouped.
Back under green Sabraski remained in the lead, Gierke was second, and the rest of the lead pack was three and nearly four wide for positions. Gierke remained glued to Sabraski’s door and with two laps to go provided a signficant challenge — before Sabraski pulled away and another caution was triggered.
The green, white, checkered restart was a thriller as Sabraski, Gierke, Jeremy Nelson and Landon Atkinson entered the first turn four-wide. Gierke dropped to fourth, as Sabraski, Nelson and Atkinson remained three wide for the final lap and it was a shootout to the finish. Sabraski pulled off the win followed by Nelson, Atkinson, Eric Lamm and Travis Schulte in the top five.
Anthony Jenson (Mark Anderson Photo)
The WISSOTA Hornets followed the Modifieds, and had a similar thrilling finish. Travis Bruns and Adam Throener brought the racers to green, joined by Brendan Bockwitz and Bobie Arnes in a four-wide battle for the lead from the start. Arnes pulled away and established a good advantage as Tony Jenson moved his way to second. Jenson quickly closed the gap to Arnes and with just a few laps to go, the drivers were door to door. As the white was raised, Arnes was in the lead by .003 seconds, but when the checkered flag flew, the margin of difference was .036 seconds, and Tony Jenson got the exciting win. Arnes settled for second with Brady Fosso, Randy Jacoboski and Bockwitz in the top five.
Dave Mass (Mark Anderson Photo)
Dave Mass and Don Shaw took the WISSOTA Late Models to the green flag, and Shaw sped into the lead. Mass held second with Kyle Peterlin in third. Peterlin raced alongside Mass in a challenge for second before the yellow flag flew.
Shaw remained in command as the race resumed, with Mass and Peterlin making the battle three-wide. Peterlin backed out of the challenge, which allowed Billy Kendall to grab third. Mass kept close to Shaw and was able to edge out into the lead as one final caution slowed the drivers. Mass had Kendall and Tyler Peterson chasing him during the final laps, but Mass was undeterred and drove on for the victory. Tyler Peterson, Billy Kendall, Josh Zimpel and Kyle Peterlin were top-five finishers.
Ryan Kostreba (Mark Anderson Photo)
The WISSOTA Super Stocks wrapped up the night’s events, with Ryan Kostreba and Travis Scott leading the way. As the drivers wrapped up lap one, Sabraski claimed the top spot. Kostreba was close by, however, and sped past the No. 7a. The top two drivers began to put others down a lap as a caution occurred.
Kostreba pulled away from his competition when the race resumed, and laps passed by without issue. Kostreba handled lapped traffic in the closing laps with ease and took this No. 17 Super Stock to victory lane. Sabraski settled for second with Dexton Koch, Russell Kostreba and Denis Czech in the top five.
Wagamon’s Ogilvie Raceway will be back in action next Saturday for another great shootout. Racing will resume at 6:30 p.m. and Late Models will have the night off.
