ABERDEEN, SD (May 2) - The 2025 racing season opened at Brown County Speedway with a beautiful night and amazing racing. A total of 102 cars checked in, and WISSOTA Dirt Track Series winners on opening night included Trevor Anderson, Kent Arment, Taylor Schmidt, Andy Rossow, and Trevor Nelson.
First up for the 2025 season were the WISSOTA Street Stocks, with 20 cars checked in. Andy Rossow and Kyle Bertram brought the field to the first green flag and it was a battle from the get-go.
During the opening laps Rossow and Bertram swapped the lead on multiple occasions, with Rossow finally edging ahead on lap five. As Rossow started to pull away from Bertram, Trey Hess made headway and took over second place, setting chase to Rossow.
At the halfway mark the lead duo had a sizeable lead but found themselves in lapped traffic. Rossow and Hess were neck and neck going through traffic during the closing laps; on the final lap Hess made a move in turn three, which brought him door to door with Rossow. At the line Rossow squeezed out the win by 0.015 seconds to score the first victory of the year. Bertram, Dusty Hyatt and ninth-starter Chris Serr completed the top five.
Taylor Schmidt (Cody Papke Photo)
The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds were next on the track, with 27 cars checked in. All 27 cars started the feature and the race was extended to 25 laps. Matt Heinzerling and Taylor Schmidt brought the field to green, with Schmidt grabbing the early lead.
There was action early, as Lucas Rodin went from fifth to second during the second lap. A caution struck during lap three for debris.
When the field restarted Schmidt was under heavy pressure from Rodin. The lead duo battled hard until they caught lapped traffic with 14 to go; this allowed Jaren Wibstad and Dawson Zabel to close in and make it a four-car battle in traffic. The racing was getting good before Connor Blumhardt slipped off the frontstretch. During his attempt to drive back on the track, he collected Nathan Jager, which sent Blumhardt tumbling twice into turn one. Blumhardt was okay.
The restart came with eight to go, and Schmidt and Rodin broke away from the field once again. Rodin tried to roll the bottom a few times, but Schmidt was too good up top and the 2024 Mid Mod track champion fended off every challenge to score the victory. Rodin, Todd Stark, Wibstad and 12th-starter Kyle Anderson completed the top five.
Jake Wranek drove to hard charger honors with his 21st to seventh finish.
Up next were the WISSOTA Modifieds, with 15 cars on hand. Lucas Rodin and Garrett Gross were scheduled to start in the front row but Gross lost power on the pace lap, ending his night. Rodin and Kent Arment led the field to the green flag, and Arment took full advantage of his opportunity as he took the early lead. A caution struck on lap two and after the restart, Arment left the field in the dust.
While Arment checked out, Rodin and Mike Stearns battled hard for second place. Arment’s quick pace found him in lapped traffic by lap eight. With 10 to go, Stearns popped his motor going into turn three, which drew another yellow.
The restart gave Rodin another chance at Arment and this time he kept pace with Arment for a few laps, before Arment powered away again. Arment was in another ZIP code and took home the win for his first win of the year. Rodin, Dale Ames, ninth-starter Preston Carr and Adam Brotherton completed the top five.
Trevor Nelson (Cody Papke Photo)
The WISSOTA Super Stocks were on track next with 13 cars in attendance. Derek Zastrow and Kyle Elsen brought the field to green with Zastrow grabbing the early lead for the first lap. By lap two Trevor Nelson got by and took over out front.
Nelson began to check out but Bryson North followed him and kept him in his sights. Something then broke on North’s machine, ending his night. With nine to go, Nelson found his way into lapped traffic.
Nelson made his way around the first lap cars until one of them spun in front of him, causing Nelson to make contact with the lap car. While he did sustain some damage it wasn’t enough to derail him. Nelson checked out once again following the restart while Dominique Menzia took second, having started seventh on the grid.
A few late-race cautions gave Menzia and Mark Abeln chances at Nelson, but he checked out every time and went on to score his first win of 2025. Menzia, 11th-starter Abeln, ninth-starter Austin Arbogast and Tim Compson rounded out the top five.
Trevor Anderson (Cody Papke Photo)
The final feature of the night was for the WISSOTA Late Models, with a strong car count of 27 on hand for opening night action. Jayson Good and David Carlson brought the field to green, but Trevor Anderson grabbed the top spot from third on the opening lap. The track was racy from top to bottom and a fast pace was set.
Anderson’s pace put him in lapped traffic only five laps in. Chad Becker picked his way forward to second from ninth in the first seven laps. Becker chased down Anderson and began to battle him for the lead in traffic.
A caution struck with 14 to go due to a three-car pile-up; just one car was able to continue. That caution started a trend of cautions. Finally with 12 to go the field rattled off the final laps which was a doozy.
Anderson led as Becker challenged him from the inside. As they battled, Good regained second with nine to go and charge at Anderson. While that unfolded, Kent Arment worked his way into third place and chased them down. The lead trio were in thick lapped traffic with only five laps to go.
Arment used the lap cars to take the lead briefly with three to go, but Anderson powered back on the outside to regain it. The duo battled side by side in the closing laps swapping the lead multiple times until Anderson got a big run out of turn two on the final lap and carried the momentum through turn three and four to fend off Arment and score his first win of 2025. Good, Becker, and Dustin Strand were top-five finishers.
