Peterson, Halvorson and Schow score big during program of Thursday thunder at River Cities Speedway

GRAND FORKS, ND (May 22) - River Cities Speedway hosted a rare Thursday night program May 22, kicking off the long holiday weekend with racing action at the Grand Forks Bullring.

WISSOTA Dirt Track Series winners included Tyler Peterson, John Halvorson, and Matt Schow.

Halvorson jumped out front to lead the WISSOTA Street Stock feature early on, followed by Cole Greseth, Stoney Kruk, Chris Ekren and Seth Klostreich in the top five.

With five laps in the books, a caution fell for Greseth, who was off the track off of turn one.

Halvorson led the field back to the green flag, as Kolton Brauer drove into second, Klostreich was third, ninth-starter Greg Jose moved into fourth and Kruk was fifth. Jose displaced Klostreich about a lap later for third.

Halvorson continued to lead, as Brauer came under fire from Jose for second. Jose took the spot with 12 to go, as the front trio began to work through lapped traffic.

They were side by side for the lead two laps later, as Halvorson held down the middle lane and Jose was to his inside heading into turns one and two. A caution for Brauer, who was spun in turn four, broke up the excitement, however, and the field was back under caution.

Halvorson retained the lead following the restart, though he had company up front. Jose was close behind in second, with Kruk and Klostreich side by side for third. Halvorson held the narrow advantage with 10 to go, and Klostreich settled into third. Kruk and Ramsrud held top-five spots before Ramsrud supplanted Kruk to fifth soon after.

With Halvorson in control out front, the race for second was on between Jose and Klostreich. They were neck and neck in the remaining laps. They caught Halvorson during the final lap and closed to his trunk lid coming into three. Contact was made in turn four, but Halvorson prevailed. Jose was second, Klostreich was third, Ramsrud finished fourth and Kruk was fifth.

Matt Schow (Steven Young Photo)

Aaron Blacklance was the early leader in the WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature. It was a rough start for the front of the field, before a caution for a racecar in the frontstretch wall regrouped the field with two laps complete.

Blacklance led the field back to green, with Matt Schow taking second and Reise Stenberg moving into third. Taylor Jacobson and Brendan Luschinski were fourth and fifth, but another caution kept the field slowed.

Schow shot past Blacklance along the high side during the following restart, grabbing the lead. Jacobson raced into third, Stenberg was fourth and Austin Hunter appeared in the top five.

At the halfway point, Schow had a 1.8-second advantage ahead of Blacklance, as Jacobson held third, and Hunter worked into fourth ahead of Stenberg. As they moved their way through lapped traffic, Blacklance was able to cut into Schow’s advantage before a caution regrouped the field once more. Another caution during the redo kept the field stalled.

Schow used the high side to gain the advantage once more back under green, as Blacklance held second. Action came to a halt once more for a spun racer in turns one and two.

Following another caution on the ensuing restart with five to go, Schow led the remaining laps and took the win. Hunter got by Blacklance and nipped him at the line for runner-up honors, as Jacobson and Stenberg completed the top five.

Tyler Peterson (Steven Young Photo)

Tyler Peterson and Kelsi Pederson led the WISSOTA Late Models to the green flag. Peterson held the early advantage ahead of Dustin Strand, as Brad Seng worked into third. Jason Strand and Ryan Corbett were early top-five runners.

With five laps in the books, Strand’s choice in line began to pay off, as he quickly closed the gap to Peterson in the lead. Backmarkers were just ahead of the front duo, with Peterson and Strand dancing along the high line and the lapped traffic down low.

Strand worked to the inside of Peterson into turn one to start lap nine, but had lapped traffic directly ahead. Strand backed off and regrouped, as Peterson held the lead to complete the lap. Peterson nearly went off the top of turn one the next lap however, and Strand was there to capitalize; they were side by side coming to the start/finish line, but a caution brought the momentum - and building excitement - to a sudden halt.

Peterson shot back out to the lead on the restart, with Strand under heavy pressure from Brad Seng. John Seng worked into fourth and Schill was fifth. John passed Brad for third about a lap later.

Out front Strand had caught Peterson once again, and it was a dogfight for the top spot. Heavy lapped traffic was just ahead, but Peterson was able to navigate to the inside of a lapper coming into turn four along the low side to protect the lead and get the win at the line. Strand was second ahead of John Seng, Brad Seng and Schill in the top five.

The WISSOTA Modifieds were led to the green flag by Ward Imrie and Jordan Duray. The first start was called back, but on the ensuing try Imrie pulled out to the early advantage. Jason Strand began to pressure Duray for second and got by to complete the lap. Strand then moved by Imrie for the lead, but Imrie fought back and regained the top spot once more. With four laps in the books Duray was third, with pressure from Bryce Borgen to his inside and Joseph Thomas to the outside down the backstretch; Duray continued to hold the spot the following lap, but got loose with six laps complete and Borgen drove into third. Peterson was side by side down the backstretch with Duray and took the point.

During the following lap Strand lost the handle in turn four, his spinning racer collecting Borgen in the process; Strand regrouped his ride and took back off, as Borgen came to a stop. Joseph Thomas also caught part of Strand’s incident. The caution fell and the field was regrouped.

With 13 to go, the field was back under green. Imrie was the leader once more, as Peterson and Thomas split Borgen for second and third. Josh Beaulieu was fourth and Jason Strand was fifth when another caution fell across the field.

Imrie took off to the green flag once again with 12 laps left on the board. Peterson was second, with Thomas third. Peterson began to pressure Imrie heavily to the inside, taking the lead shortly after. Imrie then worked back toward Peterson, as Thomas held third, Borgen was fourth and Beaulieu was fifth.

Peterson had moved back out to a 1.6-second lead with four to go, as Imrie held a good advantage on Borgen. Beaulieu and Strand raced within the top five.

Out front Peterson began to work through lapped traffic, but he did so with ease and took the win. Imrie, Borgen, Beaulieu and Duray completed the top five.

In the Sprints, Jade Hastings topped Mark Dobmeier and Gage Pulkrabek in the top three.
