Opening night hardware at Ogilvie’s Mod Nationals goes to Wagamon, Sabraski, Rodin, Larson and Arnes

By Tami Jo Kuehn

OGILVIE, MN (May23) - Opening night of the Minnesota Truck Headquarters MN Modified Nationals presented by FYE Motorsports welcomed 94 drivers to Wagamon’s Ogilvie Raceway on a beautiful Friday night.

The first night did not disappoint, as back-to-back exciting features entertained fans; Clayton Wagamon, Shane Sabraski, Lucas Rodin, Tyler Larson and Bobie Arnes took home the hardware.

The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds were first up for the night and after a tough go during the opening laps, the remainder of the race was impressive. Rodin claimed the initial race lead, with Jake Smith and Wyatt Boyum close by. Rodin and Smith took advantage of a restart and drove away from the field, as they swapped the top spot back and forth. Smith finally locked in the lead, with Rodin continuing to chase. Eighteenth-starter Jason VandeKamp had worked his way into fourth and put pressure on Boyum for third.

With a handful of laps to go, VandeKamp secured the spot and looked ahead to the leaders.

Rodin worked his way back into contention and was alongside Smith; they raced side by side for the lead. The final laps were anyone’s, as Smith and Rodin remained glued to one another. Rodin was able to slide by Smith and took the win. Smith settled for second ahead of VandeKamp, Boyum and Jake Hagemann in the top five.

Sabraski claimed the lead at the end of lap one in the WISSOTA Super Stock feature, but an early caution slowed the racers. James Trantina challenged Sabraski back under green, but Sabraski retained the point. Dexton Koch made his way to third and pressured Trantina for second. Laps passed with Trantina and Koch side by side in the turns, and nose to nose at the line. Koch eventually got the spot and chased after Sabraski.

Koch was able to reel in the leader and dove low to attempt the pass, however Sabraski held his position with the white flag raised. Sabraski and Koch had a slower car just ahead, but Sabraski was unfazed and grabbed the victory. Koch, Dylan Nelson, Denis Czech and Trevor Nelson completed the top five.

Travis Schulte and Kyle Kirberger brought the WISSOTA Modifieds to the stand, and Schulte sped away with the lead. Even after a quick caution, Schulte was able to stretch his lead once again while everyone else fought for positions. Jody Bellefeuille moved into second and Clayton Wagamon, who started 16th, found his way to third.

Wagamon dove low and slid up the race surface to pass Bellefeuille, and then looked ahead to find Schulte. Schulte had slower traffic in his view, with Wagamon nearly 2.5 seconds behind him. Wagamon closed the gap quickly as he and Schulte began to make their way through traffic. As the top two were slowed, Bellefeuille caught the leaders, and the top three remained close as they calculated their next moves.

Schulte and Wagamon were nearly door to door in the final laps, with slower drivers sandwiched in-between. As the checkered flags were raised, both drivers gave their all, and Wagamon edged out the win. Schulte, Bellefeuille, Ryan Gierke and Landon Atkinson were the top-five finishers at the exhilarating close.

The WISSOTA Mod Fours were next on the agenda, with Tyler Larson the immediate leader. Dean Larson took second while Blake Hawker and Rowan Tramm battled for third. Hawker took the spot and then passed Dean Larson without hesitation. Hawker continued forward in his chase after the leader, but lost the handle in the turn and the yellow flew.

Tyler Larson was back in command on the restart with Tramm to his rear. Tyler Larson and Tramm established a solid lead on the field, and though Tramm kept close, he did not quite have enough to get the leader. Tyler Larson grabbed the win ahead of Tramm, Dean Larson, Robert Holtquist and Ashton Schwinn in the top five.

Bobie Arnes and Tony Jenson battled during the opening laps of the WISSOTA Hornet feature with Brendan Bockwitz and Alexis Reynolds in third and fourth, respectively. Jenson took the point, but Arnes did not let him get away. They continued to race close to each other, and on lap seven Arnes retook the lead. The laps passed without issue, and Arnes took his No. 94A to victory lane ahead of Tony Jenson, Brendan Bockwitz and Alexis Reynolds.
