Thursday sun brings Friday fun at I-94 as Zimpel, Reinke, Greseth and Pourrier put rivals behind them
By Ron Krog
FERGUS FALLS, MN (May 23) - After five days of solid rain and a rainout last weekend, race fans were nervous conditions at I-94 Speedway may be too wet for racing on Friday. However, a nice, sunny Thursday dried out everything and conditions were good to go.
A nice field of 108 cars in five classes entered the pits and put on a great show. WISSOTA Dirt Track Series winners included Josh Zimpel, Cole Greseth, Nate Reinke, and Chase Pourrier.
Nineteen WISSOTA Street Stocks began their feature, led early on by Trey Hess. During lap two, the red-hot Cole Greseth took the top spot, though Hess stayed close before breaking two laps later.
Kyle Dykhoff and Eric Riley then had a good battle for second, with Levi Randt and Cory Dykhoff close behind them. Soon Kammron Rose moved into the top three before mechanical issues sent him to the pits; a lap later Riley spun off turn two, ending his night.
Over the last few laps, Kyle Dykhoff closed in and pressured Greseth, but the young star never flinched and got his first win at I-94 ahead of Dykhoff, eighth-starter Levi Randt, 10th-starter Cory Dykhoff and 12th-starter Tyler Klugman.
A nice field of 31 WISSOTA Midwest Mods were led early by Jaren Wibstad, with a very impressive Memphis Klassen close behind. Ron Saurer then charged into the lead, but Wibstad took it back a lap later.
Not far behind, Nate Reinke slipped by Haley Dykhoff and Corey Storck for third, and two laps later Storck got back by Reinke. Wibstad and Saurer swapped the lead until Wibstad took it back. Then, with two laps to go, Reinke passed Saurer for second, and then stunned Wibstad as he drove by for the lead and the win. Reise Stenberg came from 16th to grab third at the stripe, while Storck and Saurer completed the top five.
WISSOTA Late Model car counts continue to amaze at I-94, and just a regular show featured a strong 27 competitors on hand for the action. Josh Zimpel made sure there was not a lot of drama as he led the whole race. It was a ball behind him as Cole Schill, Jayson Good, Don Shaw, Shane Edginton and Dave Mass swapped spots like a square dance; positions changed every lap. Schill drove a strong race to grab second, Good was third, Edginton was fourth and Shaw completed the top five.
Chase Pourrier dominated the WISSOTA Hornet feature, with Jeff Rohner charging from eighth to finish second.
Ben Wolden picked up his 50th-career Gen X Late Model win with a very impressive performance over a nice 17-car field.
