Swan, McFadden, Koehler, Wagner and Amundson treat the Kids Night crew at Rice Lake with wins

By Ed Reichert

RICE LAKE, WI (May 22) - Before a huge Kids Night throng of race fans, Kennedy Swan became the first female race car driver in the long history of Rice Lake Speedway to win a Modified feature race at the track.

Swan’s win topped an eventful night of racing. Nick Koehler nipped Mike Schnider for the Midwest Modified feature race in one of the closest finishes in track history, while Shawn McFadden and C.J. Wagner won their first feature races of the year. It was also McFadden's first-ever at Rice Lake. Shawn Amundson stayed consistent and he won his third Street Stock feature win of the year.

In the WISSOTA Modifieds, Swan started on the pole and led all laps to take the win. She drove the cushion and despite several interruptions in the race, never made a mistake.

It was a wild race for several of the other competitors, most significantly Aiden Hoffman. Just two laps into the feature, he raced into turn one, only to have his car bicycle. He was then launched into the air into a wild series of barrel rolls, which ended with him parked on the concrete wall in turn two. Fortunately, Hoffman was not injured, but it was one of the scariest incidents seen at the track in some time.

Swan took the early lead and continued to hold the point when racing resumed, as Brady Uotinen and Shane Halopka challenged her for the position. Blake Adams moved up through the pack and into the mix, but mechanical issues ended the night for both he and Halopka.

Jake Hartung moved into position, and by the halfway point he took second and closely trailed Swan. The race was shortened due to time constraints and a one-lap dash to the finish was ordered. Swan took off and rode the cushion once again and Hartung did not have the speed to match her, as he settled for second behind Swan, who passed over the finish line to the roar of the crowd. Austin Ellis snuck into third on the final tour of the race, and Uotinen was the final finisher of the field in fourth.

Nick Koehler (Chris Burback Photo)

For the second straight Saturday, the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds participated in a frenetic event, with a finish so close, it took the electronic scoring to determine just who the winner was.

Mike Schnider took the early lead and managed to stay in front of all the wild action behind him. Drivers swapped positions on virtually every lap. Jake Stai, Joe Swearingen, Blake Adams, Nick Koehler and Brady Larson were among those battling back and forth for position.

Adams and Koehler moved into third and fourth by the halfway point behind Schnider and Stai, as the pace of the race continued to be very fast. Adams continued to move forward and he found his way to second where he began to close in on Schnider.

Slower traffic became an issue and played a part in the outcome of the event; as Schnider got bogged down by a pair of slower cars, Adams caught him and made a dive to take over the lead. Unfortunately, things then got wild as Schnider was clipped by one of the slower cars and spun. At the same time, contact with a slower car gave Adams a flat tire. He was forced to pit and return to the tail of the field while Schnider was restored to the lead.

With only three laps to go, Schnider had to hold off Koehler and Larson, who were now right behind him. In the final turn, Koehler made a great move to the outside and tried to drive around Schnider. Koehler had a great run on the topside and when they crossed the finish line, it was too close to call. The automatic scoring system reported Koehler won the race .003 of a second over Schnider in one of the closest finishes in track history. Larson held on to get third place ahead of Cody Cimfl and Jake Stai in the top five.

It was Koehler's second feature win of the year at the track.

Shawn McFadden (Chris Burback Photo)

Ryan Olson was just four short laps away from earning his first-ever WISSOTA Super Stock win, but things did not play out in his favor late in the race. Instead, Shawn McFadden won his first Super Stock feature ever at Rice Lake.

Olson led the majority of the race, taking the early lead and fighting off challenges from Terran Spacek, Steve Stuart and Alex Myers. Several times he had other drivers to his inside, but he was always able to pull away from them down the back chute and hold on to his lead.

The final yellow waved with 14 laps completed for Spacek, who had mechanical issues, and McFadden inherited second. The eighth-starter patiently worked his way to the front, and with just six laps left, he made his move. He challenged Olson hard and slipped inside of him in turn one with just four laps remaining to take over the lead.

He then pulled away over the final few laps to take the win while Myers slipped past Olson for second. Leslie Leu and D.J. Keeler completed the top five.

There have been four different winners in five weeks of racing in the Super Stock division.

Shawn Amundson (Brent Creaser Photo)

The WISSOTA Street Stock feature was full of action - the lead changed hands four times during the first six laps among three different drivers. Shawn Amundson slipped inside Danny Richards on the opening lap from the second row to edge out Richards as the early leader. However, Richards came back strong to grab the top spot. They were not done battling yet, though, as Amundson took back the lead until Richards grabbed it once again on lap four.

These wild exchanges of the lead allowed Parker Anderson to close on the top two and on lap six, he drove past both of them to take over the point. He pulled away from both as he built momentum, while Amundson and Richards continued to battle as they chased him.

Anderson looked to be in great shape and maintained a comfortable lead past the halfway point of the contest. However, things turned for him in a flash as a slower car spun right in front of him, clipped the leader hard, and sent him spinning into the infield, triggering the yellow.

Anderson was restored to the top spot, but his car was not the same after that, with the front wheels pointing crookedly. When the green flew once again, he was unable to fight off the advance of Amundson, who took back the lead with just four laps to go and then pulled away. Richards was also able to get past Anderson for second. Cole Richards and Kolton Brauer rounded out the top five.

For Amundson, it was his third feature win already in 2026 at the track.

CJ Wagner (Brent Creaser Photo)

C.J. “Station” Wagner led from start to finish to win the WISSOTA Pure Stock feature, his first win at the track in 2026. Driving his very unique looking Chevrolet Station Wagon, he held off stiff challenges from Tyler Wahlstrom and Austin Fencl to take the win.

While Wagner was the initial leader, he had Wahlstrom right on his rear bumper looking for an opening to pounce. Behind them, Tom Treviranus, Bob and Simon Wahlstrom and James Rahn jockeyed for position.

Six laps were completed when Rahn went up in a cloud of smoke, triggering the first yellow of the race. Wagner continued to lead with Tyler Wahlstrom right behind while those behind them continued to fight for position.

Treviranus found the wall on the front chute with nine laps completed, which stopped the race for the second time. Meanwhile, Fencl executed the drive of the race; after breaking in his heat race, he was forced to start 13th in the feature, but steadily moved to the front. By the time that last yellow flew, he was up to third and he continued to advance, getting past Tyler Wahlstrom for the runner-up position.

Wagner continued to hold his line over the last three laps and while Fencl closed in, Wagner held on for the victory with Tyler Wahlstrom getting his best finish of the season to date. Simon Wahlstrom and Caleb Duffie completed the top five.

It was the first win of 2026 for Wagner, but the 15th Pure Stock win of his career at Rice Lake.
