Bellefeuille completes Big O sweep while Nelson, Smith and Fosso finish up front Sunday at Ogilvie

OGILVIE, MN (May 23) - Sunny skies and warm temps greeted 80 drivers and many fans to Wagamon’s Ogilvie Raceway Sunday night for the FYE Motorsports’ 21st annual Mod Nationals finale. The night was packed full of outstanding WISSOTA Dirt Track Series action. Dylan Nelson, Brady Fosso and Jake Smith all claimed wins for the first time during the long Memorial Day weekend at the track, while Jody Bellefeuille and Dustin Holtquist visited victory lane for a second time.

The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds were the first feature race of the night, led to green by Tate Kostreba and Jake Smith. Smith took the lead at the end of lap one with Kostreba and Jason VandeKamp in tow.

Smith began to stretch his lead as VandeKamp moved to Kostreba’s side. Ten laps were scored as Smith began to work lapped traffic before a caution was triggered and erased his 4.5 second lead.

Smith led the drivers back to green, as Kostreba held second with VandeKamp, Blake Adams and Tyler Vernon close behind. Smith built an immediate lead while VandeKamp and Adams put pressure on Kostreba. Kostreba held off the competition lap after lap before VandeKamp made the pass with five laps to go.

Smith had a commanding lead out front and he took the first feature victory of the night. Jason VandeKamp, Tate Kostreba, Blake Adams and Tyler Vernon rounded out the top five.

The WISSOTA Super Stocks pulled onto the race surface with Tommy Bawden and Kolby Kiehl sitting on the front row. Bawden edged out to the early lead with Dylan Nelson in second. Nelson worked the low groove and drove past Bawden for the top point. Bawden kept close and slid alongside Nelson for the lead, but Nelson pulled away.

Shane Sabraski made his way to Bawden’s door and took second, however Bawden and Kiehl kept close as they battled nose to nose for position. The Supers settled into the race and went flag to flag without any issue, as Nelson rolled his No. 25 into victory lane. Sabraski finished second ahead of Kolby Kiehl, Dylan Kromschroeder and Tommy Bawden in the top five.

Jody Bellefeuille (Mark Anderson Photo)

Shane Sabraski and JT Johnson brought the WISSOTA Modifieds to the green for the night’s next feature, and Sabraski grabbed the early lead.

After a caution reset the field, Sabraski was in command with Gierke and Johnson right behind. Johnson dove low on the surface to challenge Sabraski, with Gierke waiting to make his move. The top three were glued to one another as Johnson gained a slight advantage in having the lead. Gierke remained next to the wall and slid alongside Johnson, but Johnson regained the advantage. With four laps to go, Gierke grabbed the top point with an eager Johnson close by.

As a driver coasted to a stop on the backstretch, the caution lights flickered on and drivers slowed.

Gierke brought the racers back to green and he was three wide with Sabraski and Johnson in the turn. As they exited turn four, Johnson slid up the track to grab the top spot; contact occurred among the leaders, but drivers kept going and this allowed Jody Bellefeuille to shoot into second. Bellefeuille worked the low groove and challenged Johnson, as Bellefeuille nosed ahead at the white flag. Just as the checkered flags were raised, the yellow light came on to slow the racers.

The final restart was a one lap shootout with Bellefeuille in charge. With the competition hot on his tail, Bellefeuille led the final lap and took the thrilling feature win. Travis Schulte, JT Johnson, Joey Thomas and Shane Sabraski finished in the top five.

Dustin Holtquist (Mark Anderson Photo)

Tyler Larson sped off when the WISSOTA Mod Fours began their feature, but before the end of lap one, Dustin Holtquist drove into the top spot. Laps passed quickly by, until a caution was triggered with about five laps to go.

Back under green, Holtquist brought the drivers back to the stand with Larson and Thomas Burgard in tow. Larson dove low in the turn to put pressure on Holtquist, but Holtquist’s groove was faster as he took his second win of the weekend. Thomas Burgard finished second with Tyler Larson, Robert Holtquist and Josh Madsen in the top five.

Brady Fosso (Mark Anderson Photo)

The WISSOTA Hornets closed out the night with the final feature race. Randy Jacoboski and Nathan Penney battled door to door during the opening laps, with Brady Fosso and Christian Kast to their bumpers. The top four remained door to door and side by side until the yellow appeared for a spun-out driver.

Penney led the drivers back to green with Fosso and Jacoboski to his rear. Penney took the lead, then Fosso made his move for the top point.

The Hornets had a few cautions the final laps, but as the laps came to a close, Fosso earned the win. Remaining top-five spots were claimed by Nathan Penney, William Lange, Randy Jacoboski and Christian Kast.
