WATERTOWN, SD (May 18) - Tyler Peterson was back to business at Casino Speedway, collecting both the Late Model and Modified feature wins during the season opener Sunday night. Terry Reilly, the well-traveled Trey Hess, and Jeff Rohner also raced to WISSOTA Dirt Track Series victory lane at the quarter-mile oval.

Ryan Engels grabbed the lead when the 25-lap WISSOTA Late Model feature took the green. Peterson battled with Chad Williamson for second, and after a pair of early restarts, he began to put the heat on Engels for the lead. Peterson worked just off the right rear of the leader, but could not find the space down the straightaways to complete the pass. Curt Kranz had advanced into third, but had Jayson Good challenging before a caution fell with six laps recorded.

Engels maintained the point, but Kranz forfeited third when suspension failure ended his race a few laps after the restart. Peterson continued to search high and low for a lane around Engels. Finally, he found the room on the inside of the speedway and narrowly held the lead at the flagstand with 13 laps complete. From there, Peterson pulled out to a straightaway advantage to score the win. Engels held off Good for second with Trevor Anderson fourth and Williamson fifth.

Peterson started on the pole of the 20-lap WISSOTA Modified feature and slipped away when the green flag waved. The second position changed hands a few times in the early laps; Aaron Sowers held the spot after the initial green flag, and Tony Konold stole the spot after an early restart. Konold slipped back after another restart, and Joe Thomas wrestled the runner-up position away from Sowers on lap four. Nate Heinrich moved to third a few laps later, and Mike Stearns followed through in the next few circuits.

Peterson opened up nearly a half-track advantage before he took the checkered flag. Thomas turned back Heinrich for second with Stearns a close fourth. Modified rookie Adam Brotherton rounded out the top five.

Reilly grabbed the early lead in the 20-lap WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature with Todd Stark close behind. After a lap-two restart, Tommy Nichols challenged Stark to the inside a short distance behind the leader. Nichols lost touch a few laps after the restart, and Stark mounted a strong challenge for the race lead.

Stark turned up the head on lap six, and dialed up the pressure another notch just before the halfway mark. Stark continued to duck to the inside and search for a way around Reilly before the caution flag waved on lap 12.

After the green waved, Stark had to fend off challenges from Nichols and Scott Hansen, which allowed Reilly to edge away. With each passing lap, Reilly narrowly opened the gap and the veteran raced to the feature win. Stark settled for second with Hansen third, Nichols fourth and Luke Johnson fifth.

Trey Hess (Cody Papke Photo)

Maria Broksieck and Kyle Bertram led the WISSOTA Street Stock field to green in their 20-lap main event, but Bertram spun in turn three, though the field avoided major collision.

Hess moved to the front row for the restart, but Broksieck won the race into turn one and Hess settled into second with Andy Rossow third. Broksieck set the pace, and although Hess made a charge at the halfway point, he could only get to Broksieck’s left rear. Hess lost ground, but regrouped and made another charge with five laps to go. He charged deep into the turns and looked to the outside of Broksieck, but could not make the move work. With just over two laps to go, Hess opened the door out of the fourth corner and led lap 18 by a nose. Broksieck’s rebuttal in turn two on the final lap came up short, and Hess — who made the 10-hour trip from Billings on Saturday, and had put on over 2,000 miles during a five-day stretch including a trip to Canada — raced to his first feature win at Casino Speedway. Broksieck was second with Rossow third, Jodie Michaelsohn fourth and Cory Giessinger fifth.

Jef Rohner (Cody Papke Photo)

Jeff Rohner snatched the early lead in the 15-lap WISSOTA Hornet main event. He circled the inside groove while Bobie Arnes used the upper lane, and steadily moved closer to the lead. Arnes shot to the lead, however the move was negated with a caution after four laps scored.

Rohner switched lanes after the restart, and kept Arnes at a small to medium distance to his rear. With four laps to go, Arnes suddenly pushed up the track in turn two and slowed slightly; four cars raced past, but Arnes remained on the speedway.

Rohner raced to the checkers, and Adam VanDerostyne held off Brayden Begalka for second. Bradley Rossow was fourth and Nathan Smith rounded out the top five.

Curt Kranz paced the early laps of the 20-lap Gen X Late Model main event. Trevor Walsh made several serious attempts at the lead, but Kranz headed the first 13 circuits before the caution flag waved

Kranz was ambushed by Bodie Croninger after the restart, who led the remaining laps for the victory. Kranz held on for second ahead of Walsh, Tony Croninger, and Parker Gilbertson.
